Setting

Cuddling the Cap Corse

Owners Coline and Matthieu built bijou boutique hotel Hôtel Basgi Basgi on enthusiasm and Corsican welcome. Overlooking ancient pines above Saint-Florent’s beaches, the light-flooded rooms are neutral with a retro twist. And a strong focus on local food and wine makes it feel and taste as good as it looks. It’s set at the foot of the Cap Corse peninsula, making it easy to explore the island, before returning to the delights of the stylish pool — and its attendant bar.

Our favourite rooms

Decor and amenities are similar across all room categories, so it depends whether you prefer cosy or capacious. You can glimpse the sea from the balconies of all the Superior Rooms, making them the top choice for thalassophiles. For families or longer stays, Le Duplex is a flexible option with its well-equipped kitchen and private terrace.

Poolside

Taking centre stage below the generous terrace, Basgi Basgi’s pool is where it all happens. Shaded by pines and lined with sunloungers, it’s heated so you’re safe to take the plunge even in the shoulder seasons. The pool bar means sea-view sundowners are never far away.

Spa

There’s no spa at Hôtel Basgi Basgi, although the owners are planning to add in May 2027, which will include an adults-only pool.

Packing tips

An extra suitcase for the Corsican delicacies and wine you’ll doubtless want to bring home.

Also

The hotel holds free Pilates and yoga classes in summer. The concierge team can also arrange wine tasting and picnics at the local vineyards, with views of the ocean, or a more formal dinner with wine pairings.

There’s a strong focus on local sourcing, with both food and furniture coming from Corsica wherever possible.

Food and Drink

Top Table

You can’t beat a terrace table on a warm evening, with the breeze straight off the Mediterranean adding a salty tinge.

Dress Code

Come as you are. La Table is refined but not stuffy.

Hotel restaurant

La Table has made keeping it local something of a religion. Its circle of sourcing starts with herbs from the kitchen garden and expands no more than 50km, encompassing almost all the fish, meats, cheeses and vegetables that make up their seasonal menu, earning them the Giusti di Corsica stamp of approval. The team gives thanks to their producers on the menu, too — a nice touch. Seats can be taken in the airy dining room, where cane chairs and ceiling fans reference owner Coline’s home island of Guadeloupe, or on the terrace amid the pines. With characteristic enthusiasm, the owners also invite guest chefs for one-off gourmet nights. Tasting menus are paired with local wines and you can gather on the terrace to mingle and debrief on your favourite dishes.

Hotel bar

Infused with the same retro air as Hôtel Basgi Basgi’s other common spaces, the lounge bar offers up a rotation of seasonal signature cocktails. You’ll find sage from the garden in the Salvia Martini or Corsican citrus in the ¡Olé! Mandarina. There’s a vast menu of Corsican wines, an homage to the building’s former life as a wine cellar. Rum connoisseurs can also enjoy a surprising selection of rare Caribbean tipples, brought back from Guadeloupe on the owner’s trips there — many are hard to find elsewhere in Europe.

Last orders

Breakfast is served 7.30am to 10.30am; lunch is 12.30pm to 3pm; and dinner is 7.30pm to 9pm. You can order drinks and snacks throughout the day beside the pool.

Room service

You can order dinner in your room between 8am and 9pm. Outside of that time, there are round-the-clock drinks corners in each building for rehydration (or caffeination).

Address
Hôtel Basgi Basgi
Lieu dit Tettola
Saint-Florent
20217
France

Perched on the pine-clad hillside above Plage de Tettola, Hôtel Basgi Basgi is a short drive or 20-minute walk from seaside village Saint-Florent.

Planes

Bastia-Poretta Airport is closest at just over half an hour’s drive from the hotel. Calvi-Sainte-Catherine Airport is further across the island — about 90 minutes away by car. Both are served by flights from major European airports, although many UK flights connect through French hubs. The hotel can arrange airport transfers from both, starting from €80 each way.

Trains

The nearest train station is in the port town of Bastia, around half an hour’s drive away. It’s a terminal of Le Train Corse, which connects the major Corsican towns and cities.

Automobiles

Driving is the easiest way to get around Corsica, and the hotel’s location at the foot of the Cap Corse makes it a great starting point for scenic drives. Basgi Basgi has a secure underground car park, which is free for guests and open around the clock.

Other

For a breezy start to your stay, you arrive via Corsica Ferries into Bastia and Ile-Rousse from key French mainland and Italian ports.

Worth getting out of bed for

Despite Hôtel Basgi Basgi’s lovely pool, the bay will wink temptingly at you from the minute you wake up. Stroll 15 minutes to Saint-Florent’s La Roya beach and you’ll find Gliss1Flo, where there’s water sports, such as pedalos and jet skis, for everyone. If that all sounds alarmingly active, take up the option of hiring a luxury boat to see the coast with a glass in hand instead. Make sure to anchor up and jump off to snorkel around Corsican coves teaming with damselfish, sea bream and even octopuses.

There are plenty of enticing options on dry land, too. In Saint-Florent itself you’ll find charming fisherman’s houses lining the mediaeval port, town squares bustling with markets, and the Romanesque cathedral. It’s an ideal starting grid for driving the ribbon-like roads of the Cap Corse mountains, living your own filmic moment (soft-top optional). Extend the four-hour drive with stops at Nonza, a slate-roofed village clinging to the cliffs above a black-sand beach, or the Moulin Mattei for a faraway glimpse of Tuscany.

Local restaurants

Take a terrace seat at Saint-Florent’s harbour-front La Gaffe for prime yacht-ogling opportunities. The view’s matched by the food, which stars local seafood and meats on prettily plated rotation. For an alternative vista, take a 15-minute drive inland to U Santu Petru where tables are cleverly angled towards Corsica’s spectacular sunsets — dinner and a show.

Local cafés

Maison Salge has been serving up gelato, made from Corsican citrus and honey in Saint-Florent’s zone artisanale, for over 60 years. Grab a waffle cone to pay a tasty homage to the island’s Italian-tinged heritage.

Local bars

With a nightlife scene that’s more about sundowners than early-hours finishes, Saint-Florent has a wealth of waterside bars to choose from. Favourites include L’Europe, where your rosé comes with a complimentary serving of people watching in the town square, or beach bar La Crique, for cocktails beside the waves.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this relaxed hotel in Saint-Florent and unpacked their canistrelli and Corsican coral jewellery, a full account of their sea-and-sun break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Hôtel Basgi Basgi in Corsica…

The chairs facing the reception desk are a dead giveaway of the kind of welcome you’ll get at Hôtel Basgi Basgi — open-armed and inviting. Fancy a sit down and a chat with the team? Just say ‘oui’.

The hotel’s name, pronounced ‘baji baji’, is a Corsican expression of affection. It’s a fitting moniker, as owners Coline and Matthieu, who conceived this relaxed-but-elevated boutique hotel, are bursting with enthusiasm that’s poured into thoughtful touches to make your stay extra special.

Corners curated with complimentary drinks, cleverly designed rooms, a capacious pool terrace and locavore restaurant all sing from the same retro-modern hymn sheet. The light-filled bedrooms have lovely views, freshened by an ocean breeze from the nearby seaside. You could be horizontal on a poolside sunlounger or enjoying des fromages Corse in the chic little restaurant and the effect would be the same — welcoming warmth that’s easy on the eye.
