Also

Sunset is the resort’s ADA-approved cottage, with ramps to the entrance, and an adapted bathroom and bedroom. But please note that its rooftop terrace is only reached by stairs. Duryea's Montauk is accessible.

Hotel closed

For 2025, Duryea’s Sunset Cottages will open on 4 June; otherwise, it opens seasonally from May to October.

Our favourite rooms

The name is a bit of a giveaway, but each pad at Duryea’s Sunset Cottages is designed with golden hour in mind. You’ll find a private furnished terrace with a hot tub at each cottage, but Sunset has added sea-gazing potential from its rooftop terrace, where sundowners feel extra special — it can also double as a yoga deck or dinner-party space. Bluff and Dune are poised close to the water’s edge; Shore feels more secluded with its set-back, tree-framed setting. You’ll want for nothing in each contemporary-coastal lodge, where breakfast, non-alcoholic drinks, market-sourced snacks and sweet treats are magically laid out daily on your kitchenette’s island.

Your hosts know the best spots in town for a massage; they can also recommend therapists for in-cottage treatments and yoga classes.

Packing tips

No need to pack any entertainment: living rooms come kitted out with board games, terraces supply water views and sea-ready kit, and you’ll find newspapers, books and other curated essentials at the market.

Also

Every cottage has its own path down to the water and the resort’s private shoreline is reached via some steps down from the bluff. This rocky stretch is your launchpad to cooling dips and core-defining paddleboarding.

Children

Each residence at Duryea's Sunset Cottages is designed for two adults, but a free rollaway bed for one child under-11 can be added on request.

Top Table

It’s walk-ins only — though cottage guests always get skip-the-queue privileges — so you won’t be able to request a table in advance. That said, you’ll get water glimpses wherever you’re sitting, and the high-energy atmosphere radiates inside or out.

Dress Code

As you like in your cottage; that fresh-off-the-yacht look for the Lobster Deck, with some Cannes-inspired accessories (wide-brimmed hat, linen shirt, Breton stripes).

Hotel restaurant

A five-minute stroll from your cottage takes you to Duryea’s Montauk, a one-stop shop with a restaurant, market and boutique. The Lobster Deck is a Mediterranean-nodding eatery, inspired by the South of France’s rolling-with-rosé afternoons and designed for lingering lunches. Arrive like a local by boat — docking is included with your dining — and gaze out to Fort Pond Bay as you tuck into oyster-crowned seafood platters, for-the-table grilled fish and the mammoth lobster Cobb salad — a zingy, tarragon-dressed favorite. 

You’ll get an introduction to the Market at breakfast, which is served in your cottage and spotlights pastries, juices, egg dishes and bagels from Duryea’s own shop; you can wander down to see it for yourself and pick up frothy brews, beach-ready sandwiches and to-go salads. Like any good host, Duryea’s doesn’t want you going hungry, so your bar is stocked with non-alcoholic tipples, your pantry is like a mini market in itself, and afternoon bites and post-dinner desserts are left on your kitchenette’s counter each day.

Hotel bar

Rosé seems to be the drink of choice at the Lobster Deck, but you’ll also find other vintages, and local lagers and ales on offer. Your bar is lined with non-alcoholic choices, but as your hosts don’t supply wine or anything stronger for apéritifs at home, they’re very happy for you to bring back bottles to fill up your dedicated drinks fridge.

Duryea’s serves an all-day menu from noon to 10pm (from 11am on weekends).

If you can’t face the walk to Duryea’s Montauk, you can order dishes from the Market or Lobster Deck to your door during kitchen hours.

From its bluff perch in Montauk, Duryea’s Sunset Cottages overlook Fort Pond Bay and is set within easy reach of the town’s restaurants and beaches.

Planes

Long Island MacArthur Airport is just over two hours’ drive; New York City’s JFK and LaGuardia airports are closer to three hours away by road. Private flights or helicopter charters can touch down at Montauk Airport, a 15-minute drive from the cottages.

Trains

The Long Island Rail Road route from New York City calls at Montauk station; it’s a five-minute drive and the hotel offers free station transfers.

Automobiles

A coastal road trip is a romantic way to reach the hotel, plus each cottage comes with a free parking space right outside its front door. Wheels come in handy for touring your Montauk locale, but you can swap four for two with the cottage’s free-to-use electric bikes.

Other

For arrivals with extra Hamptons flair, opt for a yacht, which you can moor outside Duryea’s Montauk and a hotel tender will ferry you to shore.

Worth getting out of bed for

There’s very little reason to venture from Duryea’s Sunset Cottages: breakfast, afternoon snacks and post-dinner sweets appear on your kitchenette island each day to fuel you for paddleboarding and swimming off the private shoreline, coastal electric-bike rides and in-cottage alfresco yoga or massages (arranged on request). Even extroverts are enticed by the prospect of staying at home, thanks to immaculate interiors, bay-gazing terraces and a made-for-two hot tub. A five-minute stroll away, Duryea’s Lobster Deck, market and boutique supply treats in all forms; the rest of Montauk delights with surf-ready beaches, seafood restaurants and scenic lighthouses.

Local restaurants

Family-style dishes and Tuscan-inspired cooking make Harvest on Fort Pond a local favorite for relaxed alfresco dining. Don’t judge a book by its cover: unassuming Inlet Seafood Restaurant delivers standout sushi, jumbo shrimp and strikingly blue views. The soft-hued interiors at Mediterranean-nodding Rooted are a feast for the eyes, but you’ll fill up on caviar-topped chips, fluffy focaccia and fresh pasta.

Local cafés

Left Hand Coffee gets it right with Montauk Coffee beans, speciality brews and moreish pastries. As the name suggests, Goldberg’s Famous Bagels draws a crowd for its New York-style sandwiches, breakfast bagels and strong coffees.

Local bars

Set a short walk away from the cottages, waterfront stalwart The Montauket delivers sundowners in spades from its fairylight-strewn terrace and dive-style bar. You could pop by Bird on the Roof for a lingering brunch, but we’re beelining for its signature tipples and disco ball-toting courtyard, instead.

An all-frills sojourn to Duryea’s Sunset Cottages is a bubble you won’t want to burst, and you won’t have to. Its four cottages flaunt floor-to-ceiling windows, curated furnishings and thoughtful touches, such as board games, a wine fridge and gifted caps for beach days.
