Setting

Jodhpur's historic quarter

A genteel escape in the old quarters of Jodhpur, Daspan House is a hotel made for unhurried stays. Framed by carved sandstone arches and sunlit courtyards, this restored haveli has just a handful of individually dressed rooms. Warmly hospitable staff go many extra miles to make you feel like it’s all yours. And once you’ve sampled the first-floor infinity pool, Rajasthani cuisine and classic cocktails, you’ll wish it was.

Our favourite rooms

All rooms are fitted out with hand-picked antique rugs and furniture, but we've taken a shine to the curtained day-bed nooks in the suites.

Poolside

When it’s hot, you’ll really appreciate the open-air first-floor pool, whose infinity edge overlooks the manicured tropical garden.

Packing tips

The indigo wash of Jodphur’s Blue City deserves a little colour theory. Pack something in white, saffron or dusty rose to set off those cobalt walls.

Also

Book in advance for a champi, a traditional Jodphuri head massage administered by a professional champi-wala in Daspan House’s peaceful garden. Best experienced with a cocktail in hand.

Pet‐friendly

Pets are welcome at Daspan House in designated rooms for INR4,000 per night, per room. There’s also an additional INR800 cleaning fee and a refundable INR5,000 deposit is taken in case of any damage. See more pet-friendly hotels in Jodhpur.

Children

Daspan House welcomes children aged 12 and older, but better lends itself to grown-up getaways.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Breakfast and dinner can be taken out in the courtyard, but we love the bold, locally inspired decor inside Old Loco.

Dress Code

The low lighting flatters both silk saris and linen jackets.

Hotel restaurant

The restaurant at Daspan House, Old Loco, feels more like a private salon than a hotel – albeit one that serves very good food. The room is refreshingly contemporary rather than grand, with burnished wood, cane-back chairs, patterned tiles and railway memorabilia that nods to Jodhpuri heritage. Tread with caution, dishes haven’t been dimmed to suit international palates. Expect jungli maas (goat curry) to arrive with lots of smoke and whole red chillies, while maas ke sooley (marinated goat skewers) are charred at the edges and generously spiced. Even Continental-leaning plates will carry traces of delicious heat here.

Hotel bar

Old Loco’s low-lit, convivial bar has a statement-tiled floor and inviting countertop, with cocktails that lean savoury and herbaceous rather than syrupy. Think fresh coriander or citrus oils poured sharply over ice – the only exception being a rum punch which instead zings from all the fresh orange, pineapple and lime.

Last orders

Breakfast is served between 7.30am and 10.30am and there’s an all-day menu from 1pm to 7pm. Old Loco restaurant is open 1pm to 11pm, and the bar is open 12:30pm until midnight.

Room service

Menu items from Old Loco can be delivered to your room during restaurant opening times.

Address
Daspan House
Old Loco Road Ratanada
Jodhpur
342001
India

Daspan House is in a residential neighbourhood to the east of central Jodhpur, the second-largest city in Rajasthan, India.

Planes

Jodhpur Airport is about five kilometres from the hotel, roughly a 10-minute drive depending on traffic. There are pre-paid airport taxis outside the terminal, or you can arrange a transfer through the hotel starting from INR1,000.

Trains

Jodhpur Junction is a 25-minute walk away (not advisable in the heat) or a few minutes’ drive in a tuk-tuk or auto-rikshaw.

Automobiles

If you’re in a rental car, there’s free on-site and valet parking at the hotel. Be aware that many roads in Jodhpur city are quite narrow, but near the hotel the neighbourhood opens out and driving is relatively easy.

Worth getting out of bed for

It may be known by its visual nickname the Blue City, but Jodhpur offers more than merely photogenic façades. Mehrangarh Fort is unavoidable, and not simply for the fact it’s the landmark by which everything else is measured. Its history and curatorial detail make it well worth a visit, as do the views that explain the city’s ‘blue’ epithet at one sweeping glance. Elsewhere, the marble-clad Jaswant Thada cenotaph provides a quieter counterpoint. The city’s real pleasures, though, lie in its textures: small-batch spirits distilled from desert botanicals, family-run workshops still practicing tie-dye and block printing, or the stark expanse of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park, which extends northwards beyond Mehrangarh Fort.

Local restaurants

Locals and visitors alike flock to the hotel’s Old Loco bar and restaurant, and its tasty dishes and relaxed atmosphere are hard to beat in the immediate neighbourhood. However, if you are venturing towards the centre of town, the open-air Indique at Pal Haveli serves a renowned thali and offers terrific views of the fort.

Local bars

Geoffrey's in Jodhpur purports to be a pub, as its polished woods, stained-glass details and tankards of beer testify, but for those who prefer to skip the hops, there's a fine line-up of craft cocktails, too. Drinks are laced with nostalgia at Phantom Bar at Khaas Bagh, where the checkered-tile floor and polished-wood furniture were inspired by a golden age of luxury (and a love of vintage cars — hence the name).

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this neighbourhood hotel in Jodhpur and unpacked their hand-block-printed bedspread, a full account of their Rajasthani break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Daspan House in India…

If you’re plotting a stay in Jodhpur, make it Daspan House — a 1920s townhouse still in the hands of the Jodhpur royal family, whose bones may be aristocratic, but whose mood is entirely at ease. Here, within walking distance of Jodhpur city centre, you’ll find a first-floor pool for discreet cooling-off, a bar shaking out Balam Kakdi Highballs and Jodhpur Mules, and a restaurant crowned with a cloud-painted ceiling that marries local craft with contemporary design. There's a showpiece spiral staircase in the lobby and music stations throughout provide a charming, convivial soundtrack.

Beyond the house itself, experiences stretch out into the ochre horizons. In-the-know staff can help arrange desert excursions, while back in town, local guides can lead you through the city’s blue-painted lanes and bazaars. Back at the hotel, close days with a head massage from a travelling champi-wala in the garden shade. This is a boutique base deft in balancing royal heritage with modern comforts.
