Setting

Old road to Granada

Cristine Bedfor Málaga is a whimsical, design-rich retreat spun from the fictional world of Cristine, a diplomat’s daughter raised on the mythical floating island of Clementine. Set in a lovingly restored 19th-century mansion in Málaga’s historic heart, the hotel channels Cristine’s eccentric childhood through Marta de la Rica’s playful interiors, storybook rooms where beds and sinks wear striped skirts, and nostalgic nods to imaginary friends. It’s part fantasy, part heritage, and entirely enchanting.

Worth getting out of bed for

Begin with a morning amble to the Museo Picasso Málaga and the Carmen Thyssen or Fundación Picasso galleries, each just minutes away from Cristine’s in the charming old town; staff can also arrange bike hire for your outings. Saunter along the pedestrianised Calle Marqués de Larios for high-end boutiques, Andalusian interior stores and stylish cafés fronted by wrought iron balconies.

Pick up the beach basket from your room and head to Playa de la Malagueta’s palm-lined promenade (just 10 minutes on foot) where golden sands are dotted with chiringuitos serving grilled espeto sardines and chilled tinto de verano. Or venture east to Pedregalejo, a bohemian stretch of calm waters and seafood restaurants in former fishing huts. If you’re visiting on a Sunday, make like Cristine and scour the stalls at Cortijo de Torres Market for all things antique.

Local restaurants

Tucked down a tiny side street close to the Picasso Museum, award-winning Kaleja dishes up inventive Andalusian tasting menus from its wood-fired oven, with each option designed to be eaten in specific parts of the restaurant for an enhanced sensory experience. On the pretty Plaza de las Flores, Beluga is known for elevating rice-based dishes, including its signature Alicante-style arroz cooked in fish stock and topped with the catch of the day. And it doesn’t get much more authentic than Casa Lola, a trad tapas restaurant just down the street from Cristine’s.

Local cafés

Byoko draws an in-crowd to its sunny alfresco space on Plaza de la Merced, who come for the organic, zero-kilometre brunch options like granola bowls and blue spirulina lattes.

Local bars

Swing by The Pharmacy, a speakeasy-style bar which reminisces on the Roaring Twenties, for potion-like cocktails, refreshing tonics and lively jazz nights. And in a city of rooftop terraces, don’t miss Terraza Catedral, a sleek alfresco spot topping the OXO Video Game Museum.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Cristine Bedfor Málaga in Spain…

Cristine Bedfor Málaga is the latest chapter in Cristine’s ever-expanding fictional universe. This time its boutique base is set in a chamfered corner building on Calle Granada and Méndez Núñez, a 19th-century bourgeois beauty designed by the architect behind Teatro Cervantes. Following her whimsical residencies in Menorca and Seville, Cristine’s Málaga home is a maximalist daydream of memory and make-believe.

Marta de la Rica’s interiors layer bold burgundies, garden greens, red-striped corridors and tented ceilings with curated antiques and embroidered fabrics, each space echoing Cristine’s imagined childhood on the drifting island of Clementine. There’s a library of lore, and a restaurant designed as a tribute to her friend, filled with butterflies, equestrian sketches, and nods to English stables. Each guest room is a character, steeped in storytelling and sunshine. What begins as a boutique hotel quickly becomes a fantasy you won’t want to wake up from — except perhaps to roam your Old Town locale.
