Local suppliers contribute heartily to the fine Mediterranean fare at Ca Na Xica’s open-air restaurant. Natural wood and stone take on a contemporary polish here; surfaces are gleaming white, light floods in through the ceiling beams and a full wall of windows overlooks the surrounding fields and glittering pool. The restaurant’s a short walk from the hotel – ideal for working up an appetite – and attracts hungry patrons from all over the island. Save space for the incredible wagyu steak tartare, and resolve to try everything from the Josper oven – especially the herb-and-lemon smothered chicken.
The laid-back bar is located in Ca Na Xica restaurant, where guests can sip champagne cocktails, or sample an expertly curated selection of delectable local wines, while watching the sun set over the fields.
Breakfast is served from 8.30am till 11am; lunch is available from noon, and dinner is served till midnight. A light snack menu is served around the pool from noon till 8pm.

A 20-minute drive from Ibiza town, secluded boutique stay Ca Na Xica sits between San Miguel and Santa Gertrudis in the peaceful north-east quarter of the island.
Ibiza Airport (www.ibizaairport.org) is 23 kilometres away from the hotel (around 20 minutes by car) and is served by British Airways, EasyJet and Ryanair. The hotel can organise private transfers for €110 each way.
A pair of wheels is useful for exploring the island’s lesser-known towns and beaches, although taxis are easy to come by. From Ibiza Airport, take the main road towards Santa Eulalia, past Ibiza Town, and turn left at the sign for Santa Gertrudis and San Miguel. Continue on the road past Santa Gertrudis; the sign for Ca Na Xica is on the right just before San Miguel town.
Worth getting out of bed for
Pampering is an all-day-long pastime at Ca Na Xica: pick ‘n‘ mix treatments in the spa, summon drinks to your poolside perch, or ‘omm’ away your days with private yoga sessions. Explorers rejoice, the hotel can arrange cycling and walking tours around the enchanting local countryside and along the coast; there’s also choice of beaches in reach: the hotel’s just a 10-minute drive to Puerto de San Miguel, and a 12-minute drive to Cala Benirrás Beach. Ibiza virgins shouldn’t leave without exploring the winding cobbled streets of Dalt Vila, and the Gothic-style Catedral de Ibiza at its precipice.
Virtuous eatery Wild Beets, in Santa Gertrudis, has a seasonally changing menu of organic, vegetarian dishes, and freshly-squeezed juice blends – stop here for a vitamin boost after a day of sangria-fuelled indulgence. For a heartier bite, head to family-run La Paloma, in the nearby village of San Lorenzo, to dine on traditional Mediterranean risottos, fresh-egg pastas, herb-encrusted meat dishes and locally-caught fish – the restaurant also has it’s own vegetable-and-herb garden, and an on-site bakery.
Ca Na Xica is located in the quieter, north-east part of the island, a half-hour drive away from the clubs of Playa d’en Bossa and San Antonio, but there’s a wealth of buzzy bars and beach clubs a short drive away from the hotel. We love eco-friendly Elements Ibiza on Cala Benirrás Beach, which has a juice bar, a restaurant serving up sustainably harvested produce, a lively cocktail bar and lounge, a boutique shop and several beach-side massage stations. The decor is made from recycled materials, and the woven-bamboo roof and wooden stylings provide the perfect beach-hut experience.
There are few things more disheartening than the dwindling days of summer in London. But the turtlenecks and trench coats would have to wait. Mr Smith and I were bound for southern Europe: one last summer swansong in search of warm days and blue skies. We craved a pool, great food and a destination that lent itself to relaxation, so Ibiza was settled on.
Now, before you go waving your glow sticks at me, I am aware that this notion may be a contradiction on this celebrated party isle. But today, Ibiza is as much about R&R as it is about bars and clubs. Especially if, like me, you traded-in all-night dancing for early-morning downward dogs long ago.
Bidding goodbye to London, we headed for sangrias and sunshine. A short drive from the airport transported us to the understated entrance of Ca Na Xica, set in a bucolic patch just outside Sant Miquel de Balansat, in the island’s yoga-loving, hippy-leaning northern hinterland. So far, so chic – it emerged like a beautiful secret, tucked away in the olive groves.
This former country estate has been converted into a luxurious hotel and spa, with impeccable service. Greeted with warm smiles, we immediately swapped our bags for bubbles, during one of the most blissful check-ins I can remember.
It soon became apparent that the focal point of Ca Na Xica is lounging poolside. And what a pool… The equivalent of an aquatic catwalk, it’s framed by a symmetrical line of manicured trees on either side, surrounded by landscaped gardens. Oversized daybeds and shaded nooks abound, meaning you’re never far from being horizontal (expertly-crafted cocktail in hand).
Our room was in keeping with the rest of the hotel: light, spacious and considered. All suites have private terraces or balconies and ours overlooked some olive trees. A quick change out of our northern European clothing and it didn’t take us long to hit the outdoor hot tub and spa. My feet needed to be returned to their former open-sandal glory and Mr Smith needed a cocktail, a steam room, a sauna and a hot tub (though, not necessarily in that order). Within minutes, we were both happily ensconced, relaxed and dutifully unwinding.
Come nightfall, we decided to explore the old port for dinner, starting with drinks at sunset. Part of Ibiza’s capital, the fortified Dalt Vila, is now a World Heritage site where culture and clubs sit happily side by side.
Rising early next morning – refreshingly clear of head – we walked through Ca Na Xica’s gardens, bathed in golden sunlight, and made our way to breakfast. The restaurant’s design is all about simplicity, natural light and glass. First at the table, then after migrating to a sofa, we’d very much slowed down in its idyllic confines. There was no rushing through this meal: you’ll want to take it all in, especially the people-watching. At Ca Na Xica, the morning clientele arrive as polished as the night before, dressed in designer kaftans.
We made the most of our lazy last morning, indulging in the breakfast buffet, which guided us from fresh fruit through to cured meats, delicious cheeses, pastries and breads of endless variety (the tomato bread became a favourite).
Like Ibiza itself, Ca Na Xica is effortless, chic and doesn’t try too hard, with focus on enjoying life. Which is why it’s the perfect base. It’s all of those things and more, with attentive staff who endlessly try to make your stay perfect. As soon as summer returns, so will we.
