Setting

The Turkish Riviera

Buzzy bohemian Bodrum is in full peacock mode for sun-kissed holidays, and adults-only boutique hotel Birdcage 33 is a soft place to land close to the coast. Birds of a feather – largely those who are fans of old-school style (stone accent walls, crocheted parasols…) and sociable terraces – flock together here in just 11 rooms, some of which offer balconies primed for spotting the yachts bobbing in the Yalıkavak Marina just downhill. Roost by the hotel pool and terrace bar, or fly the coop to the coast, because much awaits beyond Birdcage 33’s – actually rather comfortable – confines.

The Executive Suite with Private Garden & Sea View Room is the jewel in the crown, connecting three suites. Its spacious terrace and a kitchenette with graphic, multicoloured tiles present the perfect opportunity for impromptu alfresco feasts. The Superior Poolside Room stands out from the rest for its proximity to the pool.

Worth getting out of bed for

Taking flight from Birdcage 33 early in the day, head to the Yalıkavak Marina to eye up the ritziest and glitziest dockings that morning. After a stroll around, venture on foot to Bodrum’s old city-centre, stopping at the Castle of St Peter (aka Bodrum Castle, built during the 15th century). While here, pay a visit to Bodrum Underwater Archeology Museum located within the castle’s confines. There are several important historical sites within driving distance; plan day trips to Halicarnassus to see its ancient city walls up close and Sandima village, plotted on the Bodrum peninsula. The hotel can also help plan excursions – take your pick from the ancient city of Alinda, Bafa Lake and the surrounding Latmos Mountains, and the Virgin Mary’s house on Bülbül Mountain. Plus they offer a roster of activities, spanning cooking classes and local-wine tastings to private outings in a gulet (traditional wooden boat).

Local restaurants

If you find yourself in the marina, stop by French-Med eatery, Bagatelle for a bite to eat (and maybe a hang by the pool). Recline poolside with an Aegean Secret (a combination of Saint Germain, Martini, jasmine syrup, mint, lime juice, prosecco and soda water) or take a seat in the indoor-outdoor dining room, commencing with a decadent truffle pizza. Another option along the seafront is Memedof Balik, known for its fresh seafood dishes. Meanwhile, Morena, a beachside restaurant, located at the Bodrum Edition, offers a Japanese-inspired dinner menu with a superlative spider roll.

Local cafés

Café Mandarin is a 15-minute drive from Birdcage 33 and its feta cheese- and honey-laden Turkish breakfasts are worth the early wake-up call. Nearby Limon Café is a charming family-run spot, peppered with sinkable sofas and reams of fairy-lights. A mezze must-stop, book ahead in peak season.

Local bars

Commence your night at music venue, bar and restaurant, the Marina Yacht Club Bodrum, considered a marina institution. If you’re in town over the weekend, try Lucca by the Sea to catch Turkish and international DJs spinning until 1am.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this adults-only boutique hotel in Turkey and unpacked their hand-painted ceramics and boxes of Turkish delight, a full account of their coastal break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Birdcage 33 in Bodrum…

On a hillside, cradled by copses of wild olive and oak trees, Birdcage 33 sits pretty. The adults-only boutique hotel is a beautiful, bohemian crash-pad in buzzy Bodrum. Echoing the leanings of the Turkish Riviera in the Seventies, terracotta tones, crocheted parasols, and stone accent walls abound. It’s old-school, but still cool, with just 11 rooms, some of which offer balconies primed for yacht-spotting; and with the Yal?kavak Marina and sandy Bodrum beaches a scenic downhill stroll away, this gilded cage is far from restrictive. But, lovebirds may prefer to stay on their perch – chill out by the pool (book the Superior Poolside Room if you’re competitive about sunloungers) then head to the terrace bar for a glass of something chilled (the hotel concierge can sign you up to a wine tasting if you’re curious to learn more about the local vines). Day trips can take flight in a multitude of directions, but the hotel’s proximity to the Aegean will likely have you swooping down to the water’s edge. And, when it’s time to nest, call it a night in your modern Med quarters, which are well-feathered with suspended raffia light fixtures, rich wood panelling, and the softest of beds.
