Bodrum peninsular perch

Bank on alluring Aegean charm and view-framing suites at Oku Bodrum, an over-16s-only hotel with its own private beach and jetty. Days at this soon-to-open coastal retreat are set to lean into Oku’s trademark easygoing ethos, with morning yoga,  hammam rituals in the spa, and an emphasis on downtime by the pool or at the beach. Our favourite rooms

We’ve yet to sample the delights of Oku Bodrum’s rooms and suites, but you can expect that they’ll follow the group’s signature polished-boho aesthetic. All come with terraces or balconies that frame cinematic shots of the rocky cove and big blue beyond. But the smart money’s on the Deluxe Suite with Private Pool, where a freestanding sea-view bath tub and dipping spot alfresco plunge you into the scenery.

Join the style-conscious sunseekers sporting designer swimwear and make for poolside cabanas and loungers with tiki-style parasols. The pool is open from 10am-6pm daily.

Food and Drink

Top Table

The amphitheatre-style Round Bar may well have the edge for sunset Aegean views, but we’re reluctant to call it until both dining spots have opened.

Dress Code

Poolside cover-ups are fine for To Kima; opt for light, breeze threads at Teyo, dressed up with statement jewellery.

Hotel restaurant

Hotel restaurant Oku is poised to open its signature To Kima and Teyo restaurants at Oku Bodrum this summer, following the success of their namesake eateries at outposts in Ibiza and Kos. Poolside To Kima is the resort’s all-day spot, serving Turkish and Med fusion dishes including locally caught grilled fish and seafood, plus poke bowls, tossed salads and more. Dinner-only Teyo is your go-to for creative Japanese fine dining in an alfresco setting edged with tropical and Asian-inspired planting.

Hotel bar

The Round Bar hovers above the jetty, overlooking the cove, with amphitheatre-style terraces that amplify spectacular sunset views. Craft cocktails and meze snacks are on the cards for both pre- and post-dinner rendez-vous.

Last orders

Breakfast is served from 7.30am; Teyo opens at 7pm, and last orders for dinner at both dining spots are at 10.30pm; the Round Bar remains open long after sunset. Both restaurants are open seven days a week.

Room service

You can expect a dedicated menu that’ll allow you to order food to your room around the clock.

Bodrum
Turkey

Cast away on the Bodrum Peninsula’s sun-kissed northern shores, Oku Bodrum lies framed between pine-cloaked hills and the Aegean’s azure allure.

Planes

Milas-Bodrum Airport is an hour’s drive from the hotel. Transfers can be arranged from €210 each way.

Automobiles

If your agenda is largely fly-and-flop, you won’t need a set of wheels. But for keen drivers, top-down cruises around the peninsula’s hairpin bends and the gin-clear lagoons of the Turquoise Coast are among the region’s most memorable drives. There’s free valet parking at the hotel.

Other

For transfers by helicopter, there are two helipads within eight miles of the hotel. Or take the slow-boat to Byzantine bliss: Bodrum’s main port is served by seasonal ferries from several Dodecanese islands. Transfers from the port can be arranged for €150 one-way.

Worth getting out of bed for

Commandeer a day-bed on the private jetty and settle in for downtime without a deadline — losing yourself to people-watching while affecting interest in your Bodrum travel guide.

Oku Bodrum’s jetty is also the jumping-off point for boating day trips around the peninsula. Set sail for the lush olive groves and pine-clad hills of Salih Ada or head south to the famous turquoise lagoons along the Turkish Riviera. Traditional north-coast fishing villages like Yalıkavak and Gümüşlük are also worth a look, the former for its butterfly-like transformation into luxury marina and fine-dining destination fit for the yachting set; the latter for petite pebble beaches, family-run fish restaurants and old-school sunloungers.

Bodrum town is a shangri-la for history loverss and aspiring photographers alike. Its old quarter is sweetened with sugar-cube houses, hot-pink bougainvillea, and a bazaar hawking everything from traditional Turkish rugs to splendidly sticky baklava. Add Bodrum Castle to your agenda; this imposing mediaeval fortification overlooks the harbour and is home to a museum of recovered Aegean shipwrecks

Local restaurants

Seafood is king on the Bodrum Peninsula, where to-dive-for dishes include mustard-marinated seabass and octopus in zesty lemon butter, and the number of fish restaurants is justifiably off the scale. Yalıkavak’s Sait is a local favourite thanks to its fine waterside location and marina-sunset views. Luscious Limon in Gümüşlük is worth the ascent: its elevated hillside location, cinematic sunsets and colourful meze plates mean booking in advance is advisable.

Local bars

There are plenty of night spots in which to see and be seen along the Bodrum Peninsula’s snaking coastline. Head to Zuma for sashimi, cocktails and late-opening at the business end of Yalıkavak’s swanky marina. In Bodrum town, Marina Yacht Club promises fine harbour views — featuring Bodrum Castle — as well as dancing till late and a discerning Riviera in-crowd.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this adults-only hotel on the Bodrum Peninsula, shaken the sand from their flip-flops and unpacked their stash of (proper) Turkish delight, a full account of their peachy beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Oku Bodrum…

Due to open in July, Oku Bodrum has yet to reveal all of its charms. What we do know is that it will follow a similar, bohemian ethos to Smith-approved sister stays Oku Ibiza and Oku Kos, meaning a laidback escape where you can dial up the conviviality as you choose, from lounging on your private terrace, via morning yoga classes, all the way to balmy nights at the cove-gazing bar.

At this relatively intimate resort, interiors feel suitably grown-up, with a focus on bringing the outdoors inside through generous use of natural materials and earthy tones, plus cinematic sea-view balconies and terraces as standard. It’s an aesthetic at its peak in one- and two-bedroom suites where, alongside a private pool, there’s a freestanding tub in your bedroom, overlooking the cove through floor-to-ceiling windows. And when it’s time to do more than spectate, the peninsula’s dramatic coastline, clear waters and postcard-pretty fishing villages are yours to explore.
