Our favourite rooms

Wake up in the Poolside Suite and head straight for the water, with a furnished terrace that opens out to the resort’s swimming pool. The Marina Bay Suite comes with the most striking of views, but we’re drawn to the Grand Suite for its sprawling living space and secluded private terrace.

Poolside

Awash with the glow of the Turkish sun, the hotel’s outdoor pool lulls between cream-coloured sunloungers and shady alfresco spots for serene swims from 8am to 7pm.

Spa

The Greeks knew a thing or two about healing, and Rae Wellbeing — named for the goddess of health and fertility — showcases that legacy in more than just name. Its trio of treatment rooms host all sorts of soothing scrubs, facials and massages, and there’s a sauna for stress-clearing sessions, too. If you’re more akin to the goddess Nike, the fitness area has everything you may need for strength-building circuits.

A silk headscarf to cruise the Aegean coast in style.

There’s a private studio in the fitness area, decked out with a reformer machine for those who need their flow fix.

There’s something for everyone, but under-12s will be happiest here.

Recommended rooms

All but the Deluxe Garden and Junior Suite sleep up to three, with the third guest on a sofa-bed. If you’re travelling as a quartet, the Grand Suite fits four.

Crèche

The hotel’s kids’ club, Mundo Academy, keeps little ones entertained throughout the week from 10am to 6pm with a rotating schedule of engaging workshops. There’s also a dedicated Teenager Zone (open 10am to 10pm), free of screens and filled with hands-on activities.

Activities

There’s lots on the roster at Mundo, but if you’re looking for some quality family time, spend an evening under the stars at the open-air cinema, set sail on a private yacht, or practise your serves at the local tennis club.

Swimming pool

There’s no lifeguard, but supervised kids are welcome in the hotel’s main pool, and there’s a small, shallow area next to it for tots who haven’t grown their fins yet.

Meals

Ace Restaurant is best for families, with child-friendly menus. If you're dining at one of the resort's other restaurants, just let staff know and they'll be happy to arrange something for little ones.

Babysitting

Qualified sitters can be called in to Mundo Academy, as long as you give at least one day’s notice.

Sustainability efforts

Avantgarde follows the Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s framework to ensure it’s doing all it can for the environment. Solar panels generate all energy, motion sensors and time controls cut light pollution, single-use plastic is limited and there are extensive waste management schemes in place. In the restaurants, organic, sustainably made and locally sourced produce takes priority; plant-based options are extensive, and leftover food is donated to numerous Bodrum-based charities. The hotel’s gardens are filled with native plants, and there are informative signs throughout to teach you more about the region’s flora. Staff are also hired locally, to help support surrounding communities.

Food and Drink

Top Table

It has to be Hodan’s beside-the-beach seats. At Ace, opt for a table alongside the open kitchen to watch pros at work.

Dress Code

Formality isn’t necessary at Feast and Ace, but if you’re dining at Hodan, we’d suggest bringing out your best.

Hotel restaurant

You’ve three to rotate between: Feast Restaurant is likely to be your daily go-to for filling up on fresh buffet breakfasts, serve-yourself salad stations and à la carte options at lunch. Mid-afternoon baked goods bring the decadence between meals, and come evening, light beach bites (stuffed mussels, catch of the day, grilled veg) populate dinner menus. Seating at Ace Restaurant & Bar is centred around its open kitchen, where chefs flaunt their flaming talents with à la minute meals for lunch and dinner, each prepared with fresh, locally made ingredients and rooted in traditional Turkish flavours.

For special occasions, we’re turning our heads to Hodan. This fine-dining dinner spot sits at the edge of the Aegean and its award-winning menus are courtesy of head chef Çiğdem Seferoğlu. Everything draws inspiration from time-honoured Anatolian dishes, cooked slowly and ever changing based on the season's crop.

Hotel bar

Each restaurant has its own bar, but for a dedicated watering hole, the Refined Bar will be your base. Set steps from the beach, this into-the-night spot brings the energy with daily DJ sets and a cornucopia of craft cocktails, well-balanced beers and an assortment of wines straight from the on-site cellar.

Last orders

Feast is open for breakfast from 8am–11am; lunch from noon, and dinner between 4.30pm and 5.30pm. Lunch at Ace is noon–6pm, and it’s 7pm–11pm for dinner. Hodan serves dinner 7.30pm–1am, with last orders at 11pm. Refined Bar pours 9am till midnight.

Room service

Dishes can be delivered to your door at all hours.

Set back from Bodrum’s bustle, Avantgarde Refined Yalikavak sits in its namesake neighbourhood, watching over the marina from its Küdür Bay vantage point.

Planes

Bodrum Milas Airport serves most major hubs, and is around 45 to 60 minutes from the hotel by car. Staff can arrange private transfers from €120 each way.

Automobiles

You aren’t in the city’s centre here, so a set of wheels will be useful if you’re planning on venturing beyond the resort’s beachfront setting. There’s free private parking in front of the hotel.

Other

Coastal loops, day-trips, private charters and island crossings all depart from the hotel's nearby Yalikavak Marina. And if you’re arriving by boat, you’re welcome to moor here — prices start at around €85 a night, but differ depending on vessel size and season.

Worth getting out of bed for

Yalikavak’s coastal setting puts it in prime place for setting sail along the Aegean. Head down to its namesake marina and take to the water whichever way you please — there are traditional Turkish gulets, catamarans, motorboats and private yachts. However you decide to cruise, hotel staff will pack you up with goodie-piled picnics and snorkels for a top-scoring time. If you'd rather stick to the sand, the hotel’s beach club, with its made-for-basking loungers, secluded cabanas and lo-fi DJ sets, is where most choose to chill.

Bodrum has been producing acclaimed olive oils since the Hellenistic period, and thankfully you're surrounded by family-run farms here, so tasting sessions and lessons in traditional harvesting techniques are an engaging way to learn about its production. Kick your education up a notch with a guided tour around the ancient city of Ephesus, home to landmarks including the Celsus Library, Great Theatre and Temple of Artemis

Local restaurants

Make for the marina and you’ll find an abundance of eateries to choose from. Sofi’s Marina Brasserie is ideal for families, with its laidback ambience, themed evenings and moreish Mediterranean meze. And if you're in the mood for seafood, Sakhalin Bodrum Restaurant serves all sorts of fresh fish, caught straight from the water it watches over.

Drive 10 minutes inland and you’ll find a seven-acre garden and strings of fairy lights hugging refined Mezra Yalikavak, where fine-dining menus showcase Bodrum’s bounty, grilled on an open fire and finished with hand-picked herbs from the surrounding gardens.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this kick-back-and-relax retreat in Turkey and unpacked their meze bowls and homemade baklava, a full account of their beachfront break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Avantgarde Refined Yalikavak on the Bodrum Peninsula…

Perched along the Bodrum Peninsula’s southern shore, Avantgarde Refined Yalikavak is a boutique, family-friendly resort with some serious talents to tout.

First up, we've the discerning concierge team, on standby to schedule everything from cruising the Aegean and touring the peninsula’s picture-perfect landmarks, to visiting local olive oil farmers. It’s not shy about flexing its coastal setting, either, with a beach club that skirts Küdür Bay and a curvaceous swimming pool propped just above.

But this retreat is as much about showcasing other’s skills as it is its own: Bodrum-based artisans use rooms as their canvas for each piece of bespoke furniture; and at the trio of restaurants, every flavourful dish can be traced back to Turkey’s seasoned suppliers. Ancient Greek rituals may be the inspiration behind the spa, but their practice is carried out by the healing hands of local masseurs — and with tots entertained at the kids’ club, that restorative pace is set to soon be part of your repertoire, too...
