Setting

City by the sea

A seamless celebration of art deco and Neoclassical, tied together by an audacious colour palette, awaits at Aristide Hotel in the city of Hermoupolis on laidback Syros. Different strains of marble set the theme in each mindfully designed suite, where tall headboards point towards ornate ceilings, sometimes painted in cheekily contrasting shades. You’ll have art on the brain wherever you go here – follow the winding stairway up to the owners’ private gallery to take in the latest temporary exhibition by resident artists. It’s eight minutes’ walk to the nearest beach or into the city’s elegant main square. It’s a good starting point for discovering this former shipbuilding outpost before heading back to your marbled quarters – this time with the Syros sunset taking centre stage.

Our favourite rooms

When such care has been taken to instill each space with individual flavour, favourites will certainly be a matter of taste. But for its sheer va-va-voom, the Naxos suite comes out on top for us. That show-stopping bathroom goes a step above in design ambition, with its sleek freestanding tub and glass-walled shower raised on a thick slab of Naxos marble from Syros's Cycladic neighbour. The effect is both ostentatious and irresistible. The huge leaning mirror with thick gold frame and hanging neon light complete the paradoxical trad-meets-now picture. The bedroom has soft furnishings in blue, grey and mustard, and a soaring painted ceiling. The in-room artworks are by Dan Laurentiu Arcus and Daniel Cooke.

Poolside

Three of the rooms have their own private plunge pools. The beach is just eight minutes’ walk from the hotel.

Sustainability efforts

Big efforts are made to make Aristide as sustainable and nature-kind as possible. There are no single-use plastics on site, food waste is composted, and rooms come with compostable flax slippers and bamboo toothbrushes. Rainwater is collected using a cistern and heated using solar power. The hotel has joined a tree-planting initiative to ‘re-green’ the island and most of the produce used in the kitchen is organic and sourced from Syros or other Cycladic islands.

Top Table

Choose a quiet spot on the roof terrace at night, with views over the sea and pretty rooftops. Or, if you’ve gone for a room with a private terrace, you can crank up the romance with a meal brought to your door.

Dress Code

Carefree island chic.

Hotel restaurant

Helmed by food and wine critic Nikoleta Makrionitou, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant dishes up Cycladic classics produced entirely from local and organic ingredients that change with the seasons. For breakfast, expect San Michali saganaki and yoghurt-topped zucchini tarts, made with produce from the hotel’s own fruit and vegetable patch.

Hotel bar

At sundowner hour, choose between the rooftop bar (6–11.30pm) or the interior bar and garden (5pm to midnight). Wherever you choose to perch, you’ll have a menu of house cocktails designed by Christos Gkolfis and an extensive Greek and Cycladic wine list to choose from. The interior bar is done out in a charming Deco style complete with deep red walls, recessed arched shelving (echoed in the arched mirror opposite) and pendant lighting. Step through the far door to access the walled garden with its parasols, pot plants and thick-trunked trees emerging from between paving slabs. The rooftop is enchanting in the evening with its island and sea views.

Breakfast is served from 8am to 12pm, brunch from 11am to 1pm, and dinner from 7pm to 11.30pm.

Room service

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this high-glamour mansion in Hermoupolis and unpacked their Syros-made jewellery and ceramics, a full account of their sun-scorched island break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Aristide Hotel on Syros…

Pushing open the heavy wooden door and climbing that first set of white marble steps is like entering a private home decked out by your fanciest friend. Aristide Hotel’s Greek Neoclassical skeleton has been overlaid using a dreamy Deco aesthetic and peppered with a private collection of art that makes every space feel fresh and original. Look out for Doric columns and sky-high mouldings, parquet and globe lamps, spindle-legged tub chairs and hyper-modern neon light fittings. Whether you’re checking into a suite with a private plunge pool or a romantic sea-view balcony, your room comes with carefully curated artworks from the owners’ personal collection. There’s also a gallery space of temporary exhibitions for you to enjoy in a quiet moment. Elegant guest bathrooms come with circular mirrors, glowing globe lights, plenty of matching marble, and greenery springing from corner pots. There’s a hi-tech focus in the little details, such as touch-control neon lighting, wireless speakers and under-bed night lights, setting the scene for a stay in maximum comfort. Out the window, note the hefty mansions of well-heeled Vaporia, a once-booming shipbuilding area with grand residences built to match, and the blue waves of the Aegean.
