11am, and check-in is at 2pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability. A charge of 50 per cent of the room rate applies for late check-out until 4pm.

Rates exclude breakfast, but a locally sourced Continental spread with à la carte options is available from €10, served in the poolside breakfast room. There's a standard minimum stay of two nights, which can vary, subject to availability.

The six ground-floor suites may meet your needs if you have some mobility, though unfortunately if you’re a wheelchair user, there are no specially-adapted features at Aménte Mindful Suites.

Hotel closed

Gym, charged laundry service, and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, ceiling fan, smart TV, Nespresso coffee machine, free bottled water, pool and beach towels, bathrobes, slippers and local bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Glimpses of the Med sparkle against the arid countryside from your shaded balcony in Deluxe Sea View Suites, which are super-roomy. If a designated dipping spot tops your wishlist, opt for a ground-floor Suite with Private Pool.

Poolside

The Suites’ L-shaped saltwater pool (open 10am until 6pm) abuts a thatch-shaded terrace, lined with loungers. A second outdoor pool, beside Aménte Mindful Stay, is open from 10am to 10pm and is furnished with pillowy sunloungers and oversized cushions to sink into.

Spa

There's no spa at Aménte, but in-room treatments with a local therapist can be arranged with notice for an additional fee.

Packing tips

More novels than you think you’ll need — more swimwear, too; island time here is sun-kissed and slow tempo.

There isn't one – Aménte’s laidback set-up makes it the kind of place where others don’t care much what you wear.

Hotel restaurant

There's no restaurant at Aménte Mindful Suites, but a dining room beside the pool is the setting for breakfasts of seasonal fruit, locally baked pastries, Greek cheeses and honey, coffee and fresh juices. Alternatively, you can order a Continental spread straight to your room. 

Hotel bar

Beside the pool, drinks are served to tables alfresco on the shaded terrace, taking you all the way from cappuccini and iced match lattes to fruit smoothies, ice-cold afternoon beers and Aperol spritzes.

You'll find Aménte Mindful Suites in the island’s south, on the outskirts of Plakias, a coastal village just south of Rethymno.

Planes

Heraklion and Chania airports are each around a 90-minute drive from the hotel, and staff can arrange private transfers from €130 each way.

Automobiles

A set of wheels will help you explore Greece’s largest island — especially the olive groves, beaches and mountain trails that surround Plakias; there’s free parking at the hotel.

Other

Sfakia, in the island’s southwest, is your nearest port for ferry arrivals. Island hoppers will need to dock at Heraklion, around a two-hour drive from Aménte.

Worth getting out of bed for

The south coast of Crete is a rugged landscape of mountains tumbling dramatically to a quieter Mediterranean shoreline, away from the more touristy east and north. From your basecamp at Aménte, you’re within walking distance of the village and shores of Plakias. Beaches abound: days at naturist-friendly Paligremnos, the sheltered sands of Souda, Preveli’s eye-candy lagoon and the turquoise shallows of Rodakino could easily fill your agenda.  

Those less inclined to sunbathe will want to check out horse riding, local hiking trails and Jeep safaris to explore the area’s photogenic gorges and cool pine forests. Archeologists can get their history fix at Bronze Age palace Phaistos or precariously perched Chrysoskalitissa monastery. For sea-set adventures, ask the concierge about skippered day trips by boat to desert islands, Chrisi or Koufonisi.   

Local restaurants

Nearby Plakias, a small fishing village, is a walk from Aménte Mindful Suites and has a rich seam of tiny tavernas and bay-spying beach shacks for dining out. It’s not just the plant-dotted, shaded terrace at Medousa Restaurant that’s attractive, its refined take on Greek classics also warrants a return trip. Gioma Taverna is a popular seafood-serving sunset spot. If you make the short drive up the hill to Mirthios, your fresh, seasonal dinner at Taverna Dionyssos will be accompanied by sweeping vistas over Plakias.

Some brand evolutions prove surplus to requirement — many a film franchise stands testament to this, clouding your love for the original. But that’s not the case for Aménte Mindful Suites, which bolsters the basecamp appeal of adults-only Aménte Mindful Stay with the addition of 12 spacious lodgings, six of which also have private pools.  

Water babies will delight in the arrival of a second outdoor bathing spot. You’ll find this one beside the all-new breakfast room, bringing with it a bar for daytime sips (we’re all for cocktail-related progress).  

The allure of Crete’s slow-paced southerly beaches remains unchanged, with fishing village Plakias in strolling distance. An on-site concierge can arrange anything from Jeep safaris to boat trips around neighbouring islets; and when it’s time to lay your head, pared-back earth-toned interiors are a delight to return to.
