Setting

Wild west coast

Sculpted into a secluded cove on Crete’s west coast, The Revery’s dreamy collection of cliff-clinging suites and tented pavilions — each with its own pool — lies far from any metropolis. Intrepid travellers to this remote retreat are rewarded with wall-to-wall Aegean views, silent starlit nights, and dining so authentically Greek you’ll never look at a moussaka the same way again. Twenty minutes from the resort, the mirage-like lagoons and blush-pink sands of Elafonisi are a hazy summer daydream made flesh.

At the hotel

Free WiFi throughout. In rooms: 55-inch smart TV, sound system, air-conditioning, coffee-and tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and organic bath products; private terrace with heated pool or mini hydrotherapy pool.

Our favourite rooms

Take your pick from marble-clad low-rise suites sculpted into the clifftop or safari-style canvas pavilions that hover above lush vegetation where limestone cliffs meet the sparkling sea. We’re all in for the Seafront Tented Pavilions: 50 square metres of space, both inside and out, with a hydrotherapy pool on the deck and uninterrupted views that might even have you convinced you’re adrift on the Aegean, navigating by the (very bright) stars overhead.

Poolside

Open 9am–6pm, the clifftop infinity pool is heated to 26°C and delivers some of the finest Aegean views in the resort (no mean feat). There's also a natural rock pool down by the sea that’s safe for swimming, though reef shoes are recommended.

Spa

There are four treatment rooms at Roée Spa, with a range of massage options available using local botanicals; you can have treatments in your suite if you prefer. The spa also has a steam room and a sauna with sea views.

Packing tips

Switch off the WiFi and go full immersion mode with a Greek island-set paperback. There’s The Odyssey, of course, and Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, but a well-thumbed copy of John Fowles’ The Magus, with its narrative that unfolds like a waking dream, pairs beautifully with The Revery’s mirage-like setting.

Also

The fitness centre overlooks the Aegean and there’s an open-air yoga deck set just above the shoreline, with its sea-sculpted rocks and gently lapping waves. Exercise never felt so scenic.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs aren’t allowed at The Revery, with the exception of service animals. See more pet-friendly hotels in Crete.

Children

Welcome from age 12 and charged as adults. There’s no kids’ club or creche, but several of the suites and pavilions have sofa-beds and the villa can sleep families of up to six.

Sustainability efforts

The Revery has been considerately carved into the remote cliffs of western Crete. Built using natural materials like iron-rich rocks hewn from the very cove on which the resort stands, open-plan, sea-facing dwellings make the best of those gentle Aegean zephyrs. The restaurant’s menu of refined Greek classics is the real deal, with ingredients sourced primarily from farmers, growers and producers around Crete. Solar panels harness power from the bright sun and energy is conserved with motion-sensing LED lights.

Food and Drink

Top Table

This remote part of the island is untroubled by bright city lights, meaning much darker skies than elsewhere on Crete. Terrace tables are well placed for the mesmerising cosmic ballet that kicks off after sundown.

Dress Code

None, but floaty cottons and light linens are your friends on warm summer evenings. Bring an extra layer for sitting out and staring up at the stars long after the desserts have disappeared.

Hotel restaurant

Don’t expect touristy gimmicks at The Revery’s signature restaurant, Fílema. No smashed plates or Zorba dances here; just authentic, refined Cretan dining that makes merry with the island’s abundant fresh produce. Expect lashings of velvety olive oil from nearby groves, fragrant mountain-foraged herbs and octopus plucked from the Aegean that very morning, all paired with wines from Crete and its neighbouring island. Swoon-worthy sunset views and a dreamy sea-view terrace complete the picture.

Hotel bar

Perched at the top of the cliffs with uninterrupted views to the west, The Revery’s bar is pretty much tailor-made for sundowners. Order a craft cocktail, a glass of chilled local wine or a Mythos and settle in as the sky cycles through vibrant oranges, red, pinks and purples.

Last orders

The clifftop bar winds down around 8pm.

Room service

You can have meals served to your private terrace between 8am and 8pm.

The Revery’s clifftop suites and tented pavilions are cast away in a remote cove on Crete’s west coast, 20 minutes north of Elafonisi’s pink sand beaches.

Planes

Your nearest landing strip is Chania Airport (a little under two hours’ from the resort). Or you can fly into Heraklion Airport, which is a further three-and-a-half hours away. Transfers can be arranged at time of booking for an additional charge.

Automobiles

Renting your own set of wheels will give you more freedom to explore Crete’s wild western coastline with its unspoilt beaches and mountain villages that time forgot. Car rental is available at both airports and there’s free private parking at the resort.

Other

The Revery can organise private helicopter transfers from Athens and some of the neighbouring Aegean islands.

Worth getting out of bed for

Mindful activities abound at The Revery, where you can wake up to yoga sessions on the shore, go full zen mode in a sound healing class and have your jaw well and truly dropped by stellar guided stargazing experiences. Add a spa, an infinity pool and sweeping Aegean panoramas that never get old and you’d need a pretty good reason to leave the resort at all.

Nearby Elafonisi is that reason. Considered one of the world’s finest beaches for its blush-pink sands and languid turquoise lagoons, it’s only around 20 minutes away. Windsurf, paddleboard, kayak, or just sit on the sand for several hours — the choice is yours. Further afield, the chance to join an olive oil- and wine-tasting experience on a Cretan estate is practically a rite of passage. Home to its own tiny century-old chapel, The Revery also runs tours to several other monasteries in the west of the island, including the ancient rock-hewn ruins of Katholiko and the dramatic Agia Triada Monastery, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves.

Local restaurants

There's little call to dine away from The Revery’s polished Cretan plates during your stay. But, if you fancy Greek cuisine that’s a little less refined, staff can direct you towards the handful of rustic tavernas that lie within a few kilometres of the resort.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this rare resort concept north of Elafonisi and unpacked several litres of silky extra virgin olive oil, a full account of their dreamy island escape will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Revery in Crete…

There’s a strong sense of solitude at The Revery, a far-flung mirage conjured into a rocky outcrop on Crete’s west coast. It’s the sort of place where silence only ever gets broken by the sound of the ocean lapping gently at the shore, or the occasional triumphant cheer of whoever called dibs on the clifftop villa’s view-blessed upstairs bedroom.

But fear not, for this innovative resort — part luxury des-res, part seaside glamping experience — ensures every single room comes with widescreen Aegean vistas and a private pool or hydrotherapy bath. A Cretan restaurant fuels with seasonal Greek staples, and there’s a small-yet-sweet spa for those who might need a little extra help letting go. Although, we’re quite sure that as the stars paint a veritable Van Gogh across the night sky and ancient olive trees sway against the hotel’s red, iron-rich façade, your serene surroundings will have done most of the work for you.
