Setting

Redwoods and sandy beaches

Escape from the city to boutique hideaway A Room at the Beach, a make-yourself-at-home stay in pretty Bridgehampton. The garden’s shaded by fairy-light-draped redwoods, the poolside sunloungers are prime spots for afternoon tipples and barbecue grills can be fired up for leisurely evening meals – key ingredients for a relaxing holiday. The modern rooms have furnished terraces and look out over the lush gardens (you’ll have access to the outdoors from your shower, too), and sandy beaches are a short bike ride away. We won’t blame you a bit if you start referring to it as your summer home…

Worth getting out of bed for

In the summer, group yoga sessions (Thursday to Sunday mornings) are free for guests of all ages; private yoga lessons can be arranged on request for an additional charge. After you’ve limbered up, take a dip in the garden pool, play a rousing game of croquet on the lawn or see how high you can go on the tree swings. On weekend evenings in summer and autumn, s’mores-making parties are held around the fire-pit. Join the great debate about the perfect level of marshmallow toastedness.

Sagg Main Beach is two miles away and easily accessed by bicycle (free to borrow from the hotel) or by car (you’ll find a parking pass in your room). Outdoorsy types can also explore the hiking trails of Quogue Wildlife Refuge or go horse-riding with one of the many local stables. For a peek into local history, visit The Watermill Center or the Parrish Art Museum. Charming Sag Harbour – 10 minutes away by car – is full of treasure-packed antique shops; and East Hampton’s the place to go for some modern retail therapy (former owner Donna Karan would surely approve). Prefer a pummelling-based form of self-care? Book in for knot-banishing massages, youth-giving facials and invigorating body scrubs at Shou Sugi Ban House in nearby Watermill. Book ahead for a wine tasting at Wölffer Estate Vineyard on your way into town to toast (again and again) to your excellent holiday idea.

Local restaurants

For leisurely morning meals, there’s Carissa’s in East Hampton (closed Tuesdays); choose from quail-egg-topped breakfast tartines, aioli-slathered egg sandwiches and sea-salt-sprinkled avocado toast. Just stopping by for a caffeine top-up? There’s an enviable array of freshly baked pastries, pies and cakes to go with the rich coffees. Lunch at the Sag Harbour outpost of New York’s Tutto il Giorno, where you can tuck into a family-style set-up of classic Italian dishes – home-made pastas, cheese-topped aubergine parmigiana and baked-in-parchment fish. In the mood for a festive fiesta? Head to Coche Comedor in Montauk for a Mexican-inspired feast of duck tostadas, octopus tacos, rotisserie chicken adobo and local fluke al pastor. Can’t decide on a drink? Start with an agave flight to land on your mezcal of choice. Dinner's at established local favourite East Hampton Grill, a moodily lit brick house on the postcard-pretty Main Street. Start with rosemary buttermilk biscuits (of the savoury, American style) and oysters on the half shell before moving on to pan-fried sole and prime-cut steaks (paired with something from the carefully curated wine collection).

Local bars

For a heady selection of local and international wines and tequila-based cocktails, make your way to Almond, on Bridgehampton’s Ocean Road.

Holiday like stylish-living maven Martha and the genteel set in this cosy Hamptons retreat. With precious few staff members mulling about (but always here if you need anything), it’s easy to imagine A Room at the Beach is always where you summer. So mix up a pitcher of fruit-laced iced tea (or something a little stronger) and survey your gorgeous greenery-filled surrounds from your private(ish) porch, or spend an afternoon by the pool with a perfectly chilled bottle of rosé – straw garden hats optional (but highly recommended).
