Luxury holidays in Virginia Beach

A stroll along the historic boardwalk reveals Virginia Beach’s headline appeal — golden beaches backed by buzzing bars and restaurants, with all eyes on the Atlantic in case of passing dolphins. But the city has a colourful arts district, too, and along its 38 miles of East Coast shoreline, you’ll find trails that wind through protected woods and wetlands.

When to go

Late May to early September is peak season, when you’ll have the best of the weather but also the busiest beaches. For warm days without the crowds, fall is a good bet.

Getting there

  • Planes

Flights touch down from across the country at Norfolk International Airport, around a half-hour drive from Virginia Beach.
  • Automobiles

Virginia Beach is around a two-hour drive from Richmond, and three-and-a-half from both Raleigh and Washington DC. The oceanfront area is walkable, but a car will be useful for getting around anywhere else.
