Our favourite rooms

For more space and to keep an eye on all the surf action from the comfort of your balcony, book The Sitio’s Tidal Suite or Cove Suite. For a fun group or family weekend, the Bunk Suite comfortably packs several guests into queen-size bunk beds.

Poolside

The Sitio has a heated outdoor pool overlooking its larger counterpart over at the Atlantic Park Surf; it’s open for swims (but not surfing) between 7am and 10pm. Keep an eye out for the cold water and frozen grapes being handed out to refresh guests.

Spa

In lieu of a spa, treatments can be arranged in-room, courtesy of therapists on loan from The Well — these include CBD-oil and lymphatic-drainage massages.

Packing tips

A salt-spray spritz for authentically tousled locks, plenty of neoprene and anything else that’s going to help you blend in with the pro surfers who frequent this part of Virginia.

Also

A weekly yoga class is held for guests on Sunday, or you can roll out the Lululemon mat in your room and access virtual classes via the hotel’s app.

Children

All ages are welcome and there are rooms with double queen-size beds and bunks for families.

Sustainability efforts

The art adorning The Sitio’s walls has all been sourced from local creatives (who were recruited to create the poolside mural), as have the beach towels and the leather used for the room-key fobs. Recycling efforts are in place, and sensors ensure lights switch off when not in use. At the restaurant, bamboo plates and recyclable straws are used.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Sit up at the counter and watch the chefs work at the special station in the Tasting Room, where cooking classes are held.

Dress Code

There are no sartorial rules in this surfers’ paradise.

Hotel restaurant

Breakfast can be purchased at The Sunroom — the menu is seasonal, but usual suspects such as overnight oats, smoothies and eggs every-way will be on offer. The Sunroom stays open all day for hearty, post-surf sustenance, with dishes such as shrimp flatbread with Manchego and heirloom cherry tomatoes, Wagyu cheesesteak and signature salads all available. The poke bowl is another favourite.

Hotel bar

The Sunroom’s bar has a happy hour Sunday to Thursday, from 4pm to 6pm; and things get even livelier on Friday and Saturday afternoons (3pm to 6pm) when there’s live music. The Virginia Beach classic Orange Crush, with OJ, vodka, triple sec, lemon and lime, is alive and well here at The Sitio, so be sure to try one (though guests are advised not to drink more than two…).

Last orders

The Sunroom serves breakfast between 7am and 10am, and then food is available all day until 10pm. The bar also pours until 10pm.

Room service

You can have dishes delivered to your door during restaurant hours.

Address
The Sitio
365 18th Street Suite 160
Virginia Beach
23451
United States

The Sitio is in the Virginia state city of Virginia Beach, next to the Atlantic Ocean on the USA’s East Coast.

Planes

The nearest airport is Norfolk International, a 25-minute drive from the hotel.

Trains

Automobiles

There’s a surf park next door, and the pier and boardwalk are just a few minutes away on foot, so you likely won’t need wheels to get around the main oceanfront area. If you have come by car, keep it at the hotel’s car park for $30 a night. The closest big cities are Richmond (two hours away), and Raleigh and Washington DC (a three-and-a-half- to four-hour drive).

Worth getting out of bed for

The obvious activity choice at The Sitio won’t take very long to determine, since there’s a giant, man-made surf lagoon outside the hotel — Atlantic Park Surf is an ambitious project with varying types of waves (slow-moving, open-face, waist- and head-high…). There’s a beach with cabanas here if you’d rather stay sedentary; otherwise, lessons in board riding are available for all skill levels, including camps taught by former world champions such as Lisa Andersen for those taking the assignment seriously. You can simply watch the action from the hotel deck, where there’s often live music at weekends. Within a few minutes’ walk from The Sitio are the Virginia Beach boardwalk and pier, where you can go fishing. Further afield along the East Coast, you’ll find trails for hiking through protected woods and wetlands.

Local restaurants

There are lots of restaurants in and around the Atlantic Park Surf complex, including The Hampton Social, the perfect, breezy seaside spot for cocktails and seafood — take your pick of the raw bar, order sharing plates of calamari or ‘dynamite’ shrimp (in a creamy chili sauce), or a trio of rolls filled with lobster, crab and shrimp. For temaki heaven, locate NYC favourite Nami Nori; for family-pleasing pizza, try Wiseguy’s pies; and for juicy steaks, it has to be The Grill

Local cafés

All-American breakfasts are available at The Tulu, right on the shore. The hotel will gladly caffeinate you, but for more options out and about, try Vlove Coffee House or Daybreak Coffee Club.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this ocean-edge hotel on the East Coast and unpacked their wetsuits and wax, a full account of their breezy break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Sitio in Virginia Beach…

Virginia Beach’s most famous son Pharrell Williams may be more famous for producing hit records than hotels, but we think he’s on to a platinum seller here at The Sitio. The ambitious enterprise — of which Williams is a part, alongside other investors — has been years in the making. It’s a 10-acre, Atlantic-edge playground with a wave garden, music venue and various hospitality and retail establishments. Right next door to the surf lagoon, the hotel has just 20 rooms, some of which have a balcony for wave-watching. It’s also home to The Sunroom and a pool deck, where you can listen to Pharrell-approved playlists or live music at the weekend over poke bowls and Orange Crush cocktails.

As well as wave-riding champions rocking up to teach a camp over at the surf park, the hotel hosts guest chefs on summer weekends. And if you’re lucky your favourite artist will be playing The Dome, a 5,000-capacity venue within Atlantic Park. Whatever your programme, a weekend at The Sitio sure sounds good.
