Luxury holidays in Hampton Bays

Water is the recurring theme in Hampton Bays, squeezed between Shinnecock and Peconic bays with the Atlantic rolling in just beyond. Mornings might mean surf at Ponquogue Beach or paddling calmer coves; afternoons, a wander around the marina before oysters and the day’s catch take over. It’s a saltier, more laid-back slice of the Hamptons, with nature reserves to roam and sunset-facing waterfront tables worth lingering over.

When to go

June to September is prime beach territory, with warm days and Atlantic swims; expect the biggest crowds in July and August. May and October are quieter sweet spots; in winter, much of the resort shuts up shop.

Getting there

  • Planes

International arrivals are best served by JFK, around 90 minutes’ drive without traffic. Long Island MacArthur Airport is closer and handles domestic flights from cities including Boston, Orlando and Baltimore. East Hampton Airport caters mainly to private and charter flights.
  • Trains

Hampton Bays has its own Long Island Rail Road station, with services from New York Penn Station taking around two-and-a-half hours; some journeys require a change. The station is centrally placed, though you’ll want a taxi for most onward journeys.
  • Automobiles

A car comes in handy for beach-hopping and exploring further along the South Fork. From New York City, the drive takes around two hours via the Long Island Expressway, traffic permitting; in high summer, leave plenty of wiggle room.
