Seven miles off the southern coast of Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard is real-estate, summer-holiday and time-traveling heaven. Edgartown in the east is the best base, with its captains' houses (from the whaling days), quaint boutiques and incredible food scene. Contrary to popular opinion, the ‘Martha’ has nothing to do with Stewart, though the Vineyard is indeed home to domestic goddesses between May and September – their ‘look’ is likely to be laidback though, as soon as they’ve switched onto island time. It’s thought to be named after the daughter of a British explorer, but the native Wampanoags called the island ‘Noepe’, which dreamily means ‘land amid the streams’.
