DeDos Restaurant (8 Lagoon Road, Cherngtalay; +66 (0)76 325 182; www.dedos-restaurant.com), in the Laguna area, serves Asian tapas-style fingerfood inspired by Japanese, Mediterranean and French cuisine. Siam Supper Club (382 Srisoonthorn Road, Cherngtalay, opposite Laguna Resort; +66 (0)76 270 936) offers tropical sophistication and a jazzy soundtrack, attracting the island’s more discerning expats. Expect an appetising menu of pizzas, grilled fish, meat and cocktails. Lotus (Banyan Tree Beachfront, Moo 4, Cherngtalay; +66 (0)81 797 3110) is a casual, modern-rustic beach restaurant with spectacular sunset views. Book ahead as it’s extremely popular. Smart and elegant Silk, at the Surin Plaza mall (5/50 Moo 3, Cherngtalay; +66 (0)76 271 702), serves modern Thai food to a stylish crowd.

Casual, chic and very white, Catch Beach Club at Twin Palms (106/46 Moo 3, Surin Beach Road, Cherngtalay; +66 (0) 7631 6500) is a fashionable lounge bar and restaurant whipping up fresh seafood, barbecues, pizza and pasta for lunch and dinner. 

Worth getting out of bed for

Phuket is an adventure island and the concierge at the Pavilions can organise activities such as snorkelling and diving, sailing, elephant trekking, horse riding, golf, quad biking, helicopter rides, market and temple tours, and private yoga. You can also take your pick from a soothing menu of in-villa spa treatments, including specialised traditional Thai and Western rituals drawing on Aromatherapy Associates products.

February Phuket is a sailing hotspot with several events and regattas held throughout the year. In early February, the Phang Nga Bay Regatta (www.bayregatta.com) takes place not far from Phuket, attracting nautical types to the island. Chinese New Year 2010 is on Valentine’s Day. Visit Phuket town to watch colourful dragon processions and firework displays. Many shops and businesses close for a few days over New Year. In late February, keep an ear out for the Phuket International Blues Rock Festival(www.phuketbluesfestival.com), when local and international bands perform around Karon Beach. April Thai New Year is celebrated across the country during the Songkran Festival with water play-fights in the streets. Prepare for a soaking. June The Thailand Surf Series (www.thaisurfseries.com) links the three main monsoon surf events on Phuket, kicking off at Kalim Beach in June. August The second TSS meet takes place at Kamala Beach, Phuket. September Watch surfers in action at the third TSS competition at Phuket's Kata Beach. Also in September and October, the Phuket Vegetarian Festival (www.phuketvegetarian.com) ushers in nine days of healthy, food partying.
