Local restaurants

Renowned for its Spanish/Mediterranean cuisine, Bens D’Avall on Carretera Soller-Deia (+34 971 63 23 81) is just a short drive up the coast; ask for a cliffside table. Es Faro on Puerto de Soller (+34 971 63 37 52) looks over the Port of Soller and is worth visiting, for a lunch or dinner of local cuisine, if only for the view. El Barrigon in Deia (+34 971 63 91 39) is a more traditional tapas restaurant with live music on Saturdays. El Olivo in Deia (+34 971 63 90 11) at La Residençia offers fine dining in a romantic setting under the olive trees. And it's a good chance to show off your dressier threads, as no shorts allowed are allowed in this posh hotel. Perched on a rock overlooking the beach at Cala Deia, C'as Patro March is a great place for a lunch of delicious gambas pil-pil (prawns with garlic). It gets very busy during high season so book ahead (+34 971 63 91 37).

Worth getting out of bed for

The nearest beach is Port of Soller, ten minutes' drive away. For a little more action, hike down to the romantic town of Deia or bustling Soller. Fornalutx, near Soller, is another attractive option, voted ‘most beautiful town in Spain ’ for a few years on the trot.

Diary

In May every year (second Monday of the month), Soller holds its Moors and Christians festival, re-enacting the Arabian invasion of 1500. Real gunfire rings through the air, so beware if you're of a nervous disposition.
