Ditch fast-paced days and head to four-bedroom 18th-century cottage Orchard House, an idyllic countryside hideout, where roaring firesides and charming farmhouse features (checkerboard stone floors, rugged beams) sit pretty against expansive views of Wiltshire’s historic hillsides. This cottage has all you’ll need for a snug rural stay: vaulted wood ceilings, an Aga-adorned kitchen, garden-facing banquettes, cosy fireside sofas, and exposed brick accents and arched sash windows add to its classic country-break feel. After you’ve worked up an appetite taking on hill trails, pint-paired great British classics await you at the Three Daggers pub.

First Glance

  • This four-bedroom cottage sleeps eight across three floors. Redbrick exteriors are paired with cosy natural interiors and restored wood furnishings for a classic countryside feel.
  • Up the entrance steps, the first corridor leads to a fully-equipped kitchen (including tea-making kit, a Nespresso coffee machine, Aga, fridge, dishwasher and crockery) with impressive black-and-white-checked tiling, vaulted ceilings, dark-blue cabinets and a garden-facing banquette.
  • On the same floor, there’s a living room with a wood-burning fireplace, sofas, board games and a TV.
  • Two of the four bedrooms reside on the first floor, and the other two are set on the top attic floor. Each of the rooms have wood-beamed ceilings, reclaimed-oak furnishings and neutral hues. There are also two modern bathrooms on the first floor.
  • Outside, the cottage has a hill-facing garden with alfresco dining spaces, a fire pit and a freshwater brook.

Grounds

  • Set within the Wiltshire hills, the cottage has a spacious private garden that shares a hedge with neighbouring Brewhouse cottage’s garden. Accessible from the front door and through the kitchen, the garden has ample running space for two- and four-legged Smiths alike, and is furnished with an outdoor dining table, fire pit and wooden chairs.
  • In most directions, walking trails await. There’s a small booklet in your cottage with recommended walks and hikes around the area.
  • Orchard House shares a driveway with Brewhouse, and has space for two cars.
  • Pups are welcome to join you, just let the cottage know in advance.
  • Please note that narrow staircases make the cottage difficult for those with reduced mobility.

Location

  • Orchard House is located in Edington, a small village northeast of Westbury in Wiltshire on the northern slope of Salisbury Plain.
  • From London, Edington is around a two-hour drive southwest along the M3 and A303, 25 minutes from Stonehenge.
  • To get to Edington on the train, take a Great Western Rail service towards Castle Cary and get off at Westbury. From there, it’s a 15-minute drive to Orchard House. Taxis can be a little sparse at the station, so you can also take the 87 bus to Devizes and get off at the Old Schoolhouse – a few minutes’ walk from the cottage.
  • The Three Daggers pub is located a 20-minute walk (or five-minute drive) from the cottage, and next door you’ll also find their farm shop with local produce and all the essentials.
