  • The interiors were created by British designer Michael Sodeau. Geometric rugs sit on hardwood floors, and wicker lamps hang above mid-century timber furniture.
  • To make the most of the views, the conventional layout is flipped – the bedrooms are downstairs and the living space is upstairs, so you can enjoy an eyeful of ocean with your dinner.
  • The first-floor terrace has a table and chairs for dining alfresco, as well as a sofa and beanbags.

  • There’s a sauna, steam room and two pools (one especially for toddlers) within Club 98.
  • At the watersports club down on the beach, you can hire kayaks and paddleboards, or go windsurfing. For surfing big Atlantic breakers, arrange a trip to the west coast with the resort.
  • There’s a whole lot of Algarve to explore out there – take a jeep safari tour of the local area, or go on a horse riding trek.

  • Martinhal Sagres is on the Algarve, right on the south-western tippy toe of Portugal.
  • The sweeping golden-sand beach is a few steps away. It’s on the more sheltered south coast, so expect gentles waves rather than big breakers.
  • Faro airport is 110km away (90 minutes by car). Your best option is to hire a car from there, so you have the freedom to beach-hop along the Costa Vincentina.
  • The historic fishing town of Sagres is five minutes down the road. Check out the 17th-century fort and lighthouse for your dose of the Portuguese Age of Discovery.
