Pull-out-all-the-stops pad Es Bec D'Aguila is private-home perfection. Its name, the Eagle's Beak, refers to the 19th-century finca's perch-like position atop a hillside on the pindrop-quiet Balearic island of Menorca, gazing over native shrubbery and cerulean sea. Its Wallpaper*-worthy interiors are the work of Parisian design firm Atelier du Pont who – along with the stylish owner and a team of Menorquín craftsmen – have sculpted a space that includes bespoke geometric tiling, custom-made textiles, mid-century furniture and modern art mixed with age-old photos of the farm workers who once toiled here. The centerpiece is an aquamarine bar, which practically begs for cocktail o'clock. The grounds are equally impressive: terraces around every corner and pergola-covered daybeds beside the sun-bathed hilltop pool. Prepare for tantrums on departure – this one’s hard to leave…

  • The entrance hall is seashell-smooth and decorated in shades of cream, sage and coral; there’s a cosy seating area with wicker chairs and a sofa in a side alcove.
  • In the ground-floor dining room, pendant lamps hang over an organic-edged wooden table.
  • The large, family-style kitchen is open plan and fully equipped; there’s also a wooden breakfast table with copper pendant lamps hanging overhead.
  • Your meals – made from locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce – will be prepped by the in-house chef. Snacks and soft drinks are also provided.
  • During July and August, Monday morning yoga sessions, Monday afternoon pottery lessons, Wednesday morning advanced yoga sessions and Thursday morning guided hiking, cycling or fitness training, can be arranged, for an additional charge.
  • The first-floor living room has an aquamarine marble bar, log-burning stove, library and an oval card table.
  • There are two lounges upstairs: both have a mix of mid-century leather and wicker seating and sweeping views over the grounds.
  • You’ll find a cinema room up in the eaves.
  • The fully equipped gym and yoga deck share a deck with views of the olive groves. There's also a large, indoor yoga studio that hosts a number of taught sessions.
  • There’s a laundry room just off the kitchen.
  • Check-in, 4pm. Check-out is at 10am, though flexible, subject to availability.

  • * There are 11 double bedrooms (17sq m–30sq m) and one kids dorm, sleeping a maximum of 22 people. Each is styled in an individual, inch-perfect way: eye-catching artwork, original tiles on this floor, mid-century furniture and oh wow, those views.
  • Each has an ensuite bathroom with either a bath or a walk-in shower, and 11 of the rooms have king-size beds. The attention to detail in the ensuites is impressive, with marble sinks, clawfoot tubs, bathrobes and hotel-ready Ortigia bath products.
  • One of the bedrooms on the ground floor has been adapted for guests with reduced mobility. There’s no lift in the villa, though, so there’s only step-free access to the pool, kitchen and dining room.

  • The standout 25m-long pool is framed by a sand-coloured stone terrace with several shaded sunloungers – all looking out over the tree-covered countryside.
  • There’s also an alfresco kitchen and a covered dining table by the pool, fitted out in the same immaculate style as the house.

Grounds

  • The French-style formal garden – complete with pavilion, fountain and hammocks – are at the side of the 150-acre property.
  • There are both manicured spots and wild gardens in the terraced grounds, which have sweeping views over the Menorcan hills and the south coast.
  • You’ll find several alfresco dining tables and lounges - and barbeque equipment - dotted around.
  • Also onsite are a treehouse and outdoor play area for children, plus a pétanque pitch.
  • Orange trees grow by the front door and the surrounding fields have fruit and vegetable crops that are tended by the live-in gardener and used in daily meals. There are also chickens that produce eggs and bees that make honey.
  • There’s a large car park outside the house and additional spots by the barn.

Location

  • Es Bec d'Aguila is surrounded by 150-acre grounds in the south of Menorca, between the white towns of Alaior and Es Migjorn, close to a curlicue of Caribbean-worthy beaches. You’ll need to rent a car to explore the island, but the beauty of Menorca is that nothing is more than an hour away and many of the best spots are within 30 minutes of the villa.
  • When you're not sinking cocktails at the villa's in-house bar, Cova d'en Xoroi (www.covadenxoroi.com) is a stylish alternative on the south coast, with tables and terraces staggered into the cliffside and DJs who turn the caves into a club after dark.
  • We highly recommend Binifadet vineyard and restaurant (www.binifadet.com) for a wine tour followed by either lunch or dinner. The food is exceptional.
  • Santo Tomas beach, which is equal parts sandy and rocky, is six miles from the villa.
  • Menorca airport is 20 minutes by car, transfers can be arranged.
  • The island capital Mahón and scenic port city of Ciutadella are 20 and 25 minutes away, respectively, by car.
