Brownber Hall is a modern country house available for exclusive use, run by nature-loving couple Peter and Amanda who fled London to spend more time walking their beloved Howgill Fells. They haven’t had quite as much free time as they hoped: word has spread about this cosy-cool spot in Cumbria and a spate of industry kudos and awards followed. Peter and Amanda are keen to share their passion for the local area with you — they’re full of tips for the best hikes and wild-swimming spots or local pubs for farm-to-fork food. You’ll soon feel like part of the family.

  • This Victorian manse – with more than a whiff of Wuthering Heights about it – has been imbued with familial warmth through thrifted finds and a spot of upcycling, plus just-like-home touches: well-thumbed books, accent artwork and cosying rugs. This emboldened personality – with, say, a Basquiat print on a skateboard hung on William Morris paper – is the joint work of Peter and Amanda, and Soho House interiors architect Georgina Rose.
  • There are two interconnected living rooms with plenty of snug nooks and overstuffed, velvety wingbacks or mid-century couches to curl up in. Original fireplaces meet modern art here (a log-burner keeps things toasty) and there are antique cabinets filled with books to borrow.
  • The dining room’s large custom-made table can sit up to 16 guests comfortably. The interiors are a mix of antiques, eBay finds and William Morris prints; it’s a mismatched jumble that somehow comes together beautifully.
  • The shaker-style kitchen has granite work surfaces, a double Belfast sink and enough kit to whip up meals for the group.
  • There's a pantry with a large fridge and a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer.
  • The hall can sleep up to 15 in eight bedrooms, plus two baby cots and two camp beds (suitable for under-12s) can be added for free.
  • Bedrooms are individually styled with beds crafted by the local blacksmith, splashes of bold print, upcycled furnishings and vintage trinkets.
  • Bedroom one sleeps two in a king-size bed and has space for a baby cot too. There are sweeping views of the Fells from the window and a wet room-style bathroom with a shower.
  • Bedroom two, the Master Suite has a king-size bed and a blue-velvet chaise-longue, and a wet room with a shower. It sleeps up to two with space for an extra baby cot and a camp bed. This is the largest room in the hall and it has restful views over the surrounding Fells.
  • Bedroom three can sleep two with an extra baby cot. There’s a super-king-size bed (can be twinned on request), a wet-room-style bathroom with a shower and Fells views.
  • Bedroom four has gloriously green views, a four-poster king-size bed and a wet-room-style bathroom with a shower. This room can also fit an extra baby cot or camp bed.
  • Bedroom five sleeps two in a super-king-size bed or twins, and can fit a baby cot. There’s a stained-glass window and a bathroom with a shower.
  • Bedroom six is a cosy spot for a twosome set to the back of the house. There’s a double bed and a bathroom with a shower.
  • Bedroom seven is set in a peaceful spot towards the back of the house. It sleeps one in a single bed and has a shower in the bathroom.
  • Bedroom eight is a petite space for two on the ground floor with a double bed and a bathroom with a shower.

  • The splendour of the wild Yorkshire Dales National Park’s Howgill Fells unspools all around you, with its flocked hills, standing-stone walls and rambling hedgerows. Keep your eyes peeled for wandering ponies and sheep.
  • A large south-facing terrace with tables and benches for alfresco dining.
  • A walled, manicured stretch of garden.
  • A fire pit and barbecue.
  • Parking by the house with space for up to eight cars.

  • Brownber Hall is deep in the Cumbrian countryside, surrounded by miles of fields and rolling hills, within the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
  • The nearest airport is Manchester, which has regular services from London, Paris, Rome and Amsterdam. The drive to Brownber Hall takes about an hour and forty minutes.
  • If you’re coming from London, Glasgow, Manchester, Edinburgh or Birmingham, take the train to Oxenholme Station. From there, it’s a 30-minute drive.
  • If you’re driving, be wary that sat navs can go a bit haywire on the lanes surrounding Brownber Hall. Better to use the driving directions supplied by the hosts. They can help to arrange local taxis but don’t expect them instantly — the slower pace is all part of the charm here.
  • The location may be remote, but there are wonderful walks and wild swims to fill your days with. Try the hike to Smardale Gill Viaduct through the Smardale nature reserve, or the walk up to Green Bell opposite the hall.
