Our favourite rooms

Interiors are neutral, soothing and designed with total relaxation in mind at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som. The Serenity Sea View Suite is a sprawling space with a plunge pool-adorned terrace that faces the Arabian Gulf. The Shinan and Qataf Suites are both stellar, multi-bedroom pads with saunas, plenty of outdoor space and serenely styled; the latter's outdoor infinity pool is generous. Plus, they’re the only residences where you can opt for an in-room spa treatment.

Poolside

Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som is decked out with several swimming areas, so you can channel Goldilocks as you settle on which one is just right for you. The outdoor lap pool and spa’s infinity pool are both heated and best for the whole family. The filtered saltwater lagoon is your bathed-in-nature spot that several rooms look out to — the Serenity Deluxe Island King has direct access to the water. You’ll also find adults-only hydrotherapy and watsu pools at the spa, plus private plunges in various suites.

Spa

The Wellness Centre might be where you spend most of your time, and rightly so. It harmonises traditional Arabic and Islamic healing practices with modern wellness therapies to create a holistic menu, with highlights of hammam rituals, full-body massages and cupping. Various indoor and outdoor pools, hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas offer as much relaxation as its all-natural treatments. There are various kids’ clubs to appeal to all ages: Hedgehog Nursery is for under-threes; children aged four to eight can play at Fox’s Den; Falcon Studio caters to ages nine to 12, and over-13s can hang out at Oryx Workshop.

Activities

Each club has its own carefully curated programme of activities for your little Smith, which runs all day, every day. Your hosts have thought of everything: baby massages, obstacle courses, upcycling workshops, water frisbee and candle-making are just some of the ways they’ll be entertained while you hit the spa.

Dress Code

Float straight from a spa treatment or workout to Aizoon and Al Sidr, but you’ll want to don something more elegant for dinners at Acacia and Malbu.

Hotel restaurant

The resort has four distinct restaurants, but they share a refined-sugar-, dairy- and gluten-free ethos. Set in the Discovery wing, Aizoon is an all-ages favourite for healthy takes on Arabic and international fare; in the Serenity area, Asian-fusion Al Sidr serves equally nourishing plates all day. Acacia is the resort’s smartest option, a fine-dining spot with nods to Qatari culinary culture whipped up by chef Mayssam Abdulkhalek. Dinners at Malbu are particularly special: intimate and alfresco, with sea views, seasonal produce and Mediterranean-inspired dishes. Overall, portions are on the smaller side — it's quality over quantity — but you can always ask for something more filling. 

Hotel bar

There’s no such thing as a formal bar at Zulal, and you won’t find any alcohol here as part of its holistic wellness philosophy; instead, fresh juices and fruity mocktails will be your tipples of choice throughout your stay. 

Last orders

At Aizoon and Al Sidr, breakfast is 6.30am–10am, lunch is noon–2.30pm, and dinner is 6.30pm–9.30pm. Dinner is also served at the same time at Acacia and Malbu, but the latter opens seasonally, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

Worth getting out of bed for

You’ll be encouraged to detox in many ways at Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som, one such being digitally — there’s no WiFi throughout the resort, only in your room. Take advantage of this analogue approach to fully make the most of the hotel’s wellness offerings: stretch out in a Pilates session, up the ante with a Tabata workout, then bring it down a notch with a centuries-old Arabic spa ritual. More out-there offerings include full-moon yoga and floating meditations. 

Head to the padel court for a hit around, set out on the marine eco trail or kayak on the hotel’s central lagoon-like pool. Dot painting, embroidery and cooking classes are your creative outlets, with stargazing on the mangrove deck and movie nights concluding feel-good days across the resort. 

Local restaurants

Due to the hotel’s focus on wellness, you’re unlikely to eat outside of the resort during your stay, plus there’s not much locally in terms of dining.

Making time for a reset is easier said than done, so there’s something to be said for a bit of accountability — and a change of scene — to kickstart that process. Enter Zulal Wellness Resort by Chiva Som, a luxe retreat where your wellbeing reigns supreme. 

Although you’ll have to forgo some everyday go-tos — there’s no WiFi in communal areas, and the restaurants are free from sugar, dairy, gluten and alcohol — it’s all in the name of ensuring you feel your best.
