Food and Drink

Top Table

It's hard to beat the romance of Sýntrófi, where you’ll dine in an olive-grove clearing, but any Aegean-facing terrace table will do.

Dress Code

Depending on whether there’s a full moon or not, some special nights have an all-white dress code — otherwise, it’s up to you. Shoes are always optional, though.

Hotel restaurant

There are several restaurants at the resort, including main hub Mesogaea, which is where market-style meals are served; its west-facing terrace is perfect for catching sunsets over the Aegean. Alongside its main buffet offering — which showcases Greek and wider Mediterranean flavours, with hints of the rest of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East — an à la carte area supplies handmade pasta and slow-cooked meats.

Shizen offers Nikkei cuisine, with an omakase concept (where you leave it to the chef to surprise you) during July and August; at Almýra, surf and turf takes centre-stage, with seafood lunches and meat-leaning dinners. In the middle of an olive grove, Sýntrófi celebrates farm-fresh food, served on wooden refectory-style tables beneath fairy lights, with no fixed menu, just the chef’s daily inspo. Please note that for all dining spots, you'll need to make a reservation.

Hotel bar

Hébe Lounge is the resort’s hospitable hub, with fire pits, an ornamental lake and expansive terrace the backdrop to regular DJ sets and live jazz nights. Both main pools have a bar attached for snacks, smoothies and refreshing cold-pressed juices (alongside harder stuff, of course).

Last orders

Mesogaea serves breakfast from 8am–11am, lunch from 1pm–3pm and dinner from 8pm–10pm. Shizen’s dinner service is 8pm–10.30pm. Almýra’s lunch service is 1pm–4pm, and dinner is 8pm–10.30pm.

Room service

Available around the clock.

Greece

As the name suggests, Zélia Halkidiki is in the holiday-ready region south of Thessaloniki on the Greek mainland, formed from forested peninsulas and sheltered, sandy bays.

Planes

Thessaloniki Airport, serving Greece’s second-largest city, is closest. Hotel transfers start from around €100 each way depending on capacity and vehicle; the journey time should be just under an hour.

Automobiles

This is a resort made for flying and flopping, but if you have come by car, there’s free parking on-site.

Worth getting out of bed for

Guests at Zélia Halkidiki can surrender to the sunlounger at the beach (reached swiftly via golf buggy or a stroll) or one of the many pools, or keep active with yoga and Pilates classes in the olive groves. Hike for a scenic 15 minutes to the Petralona Cave, or tackle the five-kilometre walk to the Halkidiki wetlands, keeping an eye out for the flamingos. The resort hosts an outdoor cinema for screenings under the stars, and chefs will gladly guide you in a cooking class. You’ll also be able to hop on an e-bike to the village of Afitos, stopping off at a traditional taverna along the way. Other cycling tours on offer include a whizz through the Kassandra peninsula’s highlights, taking in a monastery, sand dunes and coastal forests; and a 42-kilometre single-track route through a quiet beach to the high-charm village of Elani, where snacks and cold drinks await.

Further afield, classics fans can visit the ancient city of Stageira — the birthplace of Aristotle, two hours away by car — and Olynthus (a 25-minute drive north) to marvel at the perfectly preserved mosaic floors. The team will also be able to point you in the direction of nearby wineries

Local restaurants

The nearest town to the resort is Nea Moudania, a fishing port with lots of tavernas along the seafront where you can enjoy that day’s catch; try Erodios next to the sailing club. Half an hour away by car in Kriopigi, Trizone Sea Treasures lives up to its name. Or drive 20 minutes north to Sani Marina and take your pick of the coastal restaurants — which include Ergon Deli for traditional Greek plates, and Macaroni for, no prizes, Italian favourites — to drink and dine while ogling the yachts.

Local cafés

Nalù will furnish you with a famous Greek frappé, and Navigli will see you through from coffee to cocktails.

Local bars

There are plenty of spots for sundowners along the shore in Nea Moudania, and a couple of beach clubs, too.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this seafront stay in Greece and unpacked their swimwear and sandals, a full account of their beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Zélia Halkidiki…

Have your passports at the ready for a summer of fun at Zélia Halkidiki, where white nights, full-moon parties and live music ensure sociable Greek sojourns. You’ll also be able to get well acquainted with your neighbours in one of the swim-up suites, which share a pool should you be feeling friendly and in search of a new pen pal. Or, amp up the seclusion and take your dips à deux with your own private pool — handy given those sweltering Greek summer highs and the need for frequent temperature regulation.

There’s plenty to keep you busy around the rest of the resort, too; from a globe-spanning restaurant and a Nikkei hub for your ceviche fix, to dinners in the olive groves, spa treatments, e-bike rides and sessions with the sommelier. Once you’re done admiring Mount Olympus in the distance from your heavenly hillside setting, the rest of the Kassandra peninsula, with its pine forests, beautiful beaches and waterfront tavernas, awaits.
