In rooms: Bluetooth sound system, Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and Mēditatif bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Zannier’s founder Arnaud set out to create three hotels in one, so that rooms in each sector of the island have their own distinct decor. Delos rooms and suites are ideal for couples and put you at the heart of the island; check out the clutch of Cloister hideaways installed in their historic namesake building. Soukana has a village feel of its own with the spa and a showstopper pool, restaurant and bar; it’s well suited to families or those focused on wellness. Traditionalists should make a beeline for one of the restored Madrague Houses, each with a small garden.

Poolside

As if the glimmering Mediterranean wasn’t enough of an incentive to take the plunge, Zannier Île de Bendor’s quartet of swimming spots means you’re never far from your next dip. At Delos, a pool akin to a lozenge of tranquillity sits on a suntrap platform that cleverly elevates your sea views. If focused laps are more your style, Soukana’s 30-metre-long pool delivers — and its striking backdrop will exercise your admiration, too. Two more pools await at the spa — one indoors, framed by graceful arches; the other is kissed by a sea breeze, and outdoors.

Spa

The wellness centre is as impressive in range as it is in its 1,200-square-metre scale. Its north star is promoting harmony between body and mind, with plenty of kit to back its ambition. Boosts to your wellbeing can be as light touch as a sensory ritual or as committed as a personalised journey. You could easily lose most of a day to its hammam, duo of pools, Iyashi dome (Japanese sauna), tearoom and relaxation area. Therapies dished across eight treatment rooms run from restorative massages to cryotherapy, osteopathy and acupuncture. Ideal for honeymooners, there’s a private spa suite, too. A fitness centre is equipped with weights and cardio machines, plus reformer Pilates equipment, and a yoga platform is set in sea-wrapped scenery alfresco.

Packing tips

For your wardrobe: let Brigitte Bardot be your muse with baby-doll accessories, playful stripes, gingham and ballet flats. For your bookshelf: Tender is the Night by F Scott Fitzgerald, Perfume by Patrick Suskind and Bardot’s memoir, Initiales BB.

All ages are well catered for here, from babes in arms through to teenagers.

Recommended rooms

Soukana Family Suite sleeps four; Soukana Two-Bedroom Suite hosts up to five; for trios, plump for a Soukana Sunrise or Sunset Junior Suite.

Crèche

Zannier Île de Bendor's kids’ club opens daily from 8am to 5pm, and welcomes children aged four to 12 (accompanied under-fours are also welcome). In the care of dedicated professionals, junior Smiths are kept entertained across the club's indoor and outdoor play areas.

Activities

Board games, creative workshops and storytimes are in the mix with outdoor games at the kids' club. Beach days exploring the island's quiet coves are catnip for families; older children will enjoy the watersports on offer, including windsurfing, SUP, Hobie Cat sailing and sea kayaking.

Meals

Soukana Restaurant is set in the hub of the hotel's family-friendly, village-like namesake area and is the obvious dining option for those with children in tow.

Babysitting

Arranged through the concierge team with notice for an extra charge; price on request.

Sustainability efforts

As much as Zannier Île de Bendor’s rebuilding is about family legacy, it’s also a tale of sustainable restoration. The island has been rewilded, with 15 per cent more trees than before and native planting around its extensive gardens. Original buildings have been brought back to their former glory, including five fisherman’s houses. Materials have been chosen with longevity and environmental impact in mind. And community connections have been protected through the addition of the locals-welcome harbour café and Village des Artisans. Grey water will be re-used in the gardens; use of plastic is minimised, including the choice of water bottles and responsibly sourced bath products, which are full-size and refillable. Food waste will be monitored and targeted for reduction; menus spotlight plant-led dining, and the kitchens work with local suppliers and seasonal ingredients.

Food and Drink

Top Table

We'll leave you to decide your favourite visual side dish, whether it’s overlooking the harbour at Café Paul Ricard, closest to the sea at Le Grand Large or spying Nonna Bazaar’s chefs at work.

Dress Code

Sea-breezy dresses and loose tailoring in cloud-white or beachy neutrals suit this easy-going island’s mood. A little ooh-la-la finery is called for when it comes to evenings at Le Grand Large.

Hotel restaurant

Nonna Bazaar will be the hotel’s casual dining spot — a brasserie at the island’s heart, spinning Mediterranean plates for lunch and dinner. For a date night or special occasion, Le Grand Large lives up to its name with polished Provençal fare and the option to feast alfresco on a terrace above the rocks. Over in its namesake area of the island, Soukana Restaurant nods to its spa-side perch with light bites and balanced, health-focused dishes, influenced by Vietnamese flavours. With a waterside terrace overlooking the harbour, Café Paul Ricard is a daytime spot for refined bistro bites: to your little Smiths’ delight, it’s set up with a crêperie counter for just-flipped treats plus ice creams. Edging the main cove, Nonna Beach takes care of sips and nibbles to enjoy from your sunlounger or on its scene-stealing terrace. Your day-starting options are at Soukana and Delos Lounge.

Hotel bar

A trio of watering holes awaits. Juices and artisanal cocktails come with horizon-sweeping sea views at Soukana Rooftop Bar, a summer-only space open from Tuesday to Saturday (Thursday to Sunday in low season). Delos Lounge evokes mid-century genteel glamour with library-worthy furniture and low lighting in a spot beside its eponymous pool (it’s also where breakfast is served). Named for Paul Ricard’s son, Bar Patrick is the drinking den of Nonna Bazaar where it feels only fitting to order pastis.

Last orders

Breakfast hours are 7am–10.30am. At Nonna Bazaar, lunch runs noon–3pm; for dinner, it’s 7pm–11pm. Le Grand Large opens 12.30pm–2.30pm and 7.30pm–9.30pm (closed Tuesdays). At Soukana, dinner is 7pm–11pm. Café Paul Ricard and Nonna Beach open 10am–6pm.

Room service

A dedicated menu of snacks and heartier options is available around the clock.

Private transfers can be arranged from any of these stations for an additional fee.

Worth getting out of bed for

Mediterranean-scented days unfold at Zannier Île de Bendor with activities on land and sea. Finesse your forehand with a game of tennis or pickleball on one of the resort’s pine-fringed courts. Make time for alfresco yoga against a mindful Med backdrop or join scheduled group fitness sessions. Paddle the island shoreline in a kayak, try stand-up paddleboarding, windsurfing or snorkelling; and a sunset cruise showcases the Provençal coastline in a fittingly rosé tint.

In the works for budding gourmets are bread-making workshops and chef-led bouillabaisse cookery classes. If your appetite has a cultural bent, tours of Van Gogh’s Arles or trips to explore the perfumery creds of Grasse on the mainland can be arranged. From Bandol, action heroes can enjoy cycling along coastal trails or plot a day-long hike along the cliffs, taking in turquoise-pooled calanques and canopy-shaded paths.

Local restaurants

You're unlikely to dine off-island but if you’re after a lunch recommendation in Bandol, here are three to check out: Sardinian-leaning Le Shardana on Rue de la République; finessed seafood at Les Oliviers; or wine-matched pride in provenance at Au Clair de la Vigne.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this island hotel off the coast of Bandol and unpacked their straw hats and bottles of pastis, a full account of their Mediterranean break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Zannier Île de Bendor in Var…

When pastis pioneer Paul Ricard acquired Bendor island in 1950, he envisioned an outpost of halcyon hedonism, where art, nature, sailing and celebrations could come together. It’s an MO that Ricard’s great grandson, Marc de Jouffroy, has long admired. Fast-forward to 2026, and after a carefully crafted five-year project with hotelier Arnaud Zannier, Zannier Île de Bendor sets sail.

Three hotels in one, with a trio of distinct areas, this upscale island escape honours Ricard’s ambition. A Village des Artisans is primed for creative sessions; and sailing Bendor’s sun-dappled waters is on offer, alongside paddleboarding and kayaking. Spells at the hotel’s holistic spa and tranquil gardens, and exploring the island’s walking trails and quiet coves, are your reset in nature. And the hedonism can be fine-tuned to your frequency at a choice of dining and drinking spots. You'll find day visitors in the mix, too — conserving Bendor’s connections to community, just as Ricard would have wanted.
