Sustainability efforts

Natural materials were paramount to the design of Yado Shiontei: handmade Inshu Washi paper adorns walls and showcases traditional craftsmanship; Chizu cedar, sustainably sourced from Tottori’s foresters, was used to form the tearoom, and local makers called on to craft furniture. LED lighting, heat-recovery ventilation systems, water-saving fixtures and rigorous recycling schemes reduce waste; and staff work closely with local organisations to help with beach clean-ups and environmental initiatives.

There’s no need for formality here: come as you are, or slip into one of the yukatas from your room.

Hotel restaurant

Yado Shiontei’s intimate, understated restaurant sets the stage for its old-world offerings. Breakfast on your first morning sticks to Japanese traditions including steamed rice, miso soup, grilled fish and tamago eggs. Your second day will start with standard Western staples, with the options alternating thereafter.

Come evening, chefs showcase the San'in region’s seasonal bounty in a multi-course kaiseki format. Dishes change depending on what’s growing that month, but Tottori-grown Manyo beef, Sakaiminato sea bream, matsutake mushrooms and vegetables picked from Daisen are some standouts. Whatever you end up sampling, in-house sommelier Mr Katsu Motoba will be waiting in the wings with his masterful pick of wine pairings.

Wine can be delivered to your room until 10pm, but for food you'll have to take yourself down to the restaurant.

In western Japan’s rural Tottori Prefacture, Yado Shiontei sits in Kaike Onsen, a coastal hot-spring resort town in Yonago, backed by Mount Daisen.

Planes

Yonago Kitaro Airport is a 25-minute drive away and your nearest, serving frequent routes from Seoul, Hong Kong and Shanghai. If you’re travelling from Europe or the States, you’ll need to catch a 90-minute connection to Yonago from Tokyo Haneda. Four-person transfers can be arranged on request for JPY3,800 each way.

Trains

The hotel’s free shuttle service can drive you the 15 minutes to JR Yongo Station, where the Yakumo Limited Express can take you on to Osaka, Kyoto and Tokyo.

Automobiles

A car will be handy if you're hoping to explore the wider Tottori countryside, but it isn’t essential. There’s free private parking on-site, with one space per suite.

Worth getting out of bed for

Settled between the Sea of Japan and Mount Daisen, Yado Shiontei is ideally placed for coast and country pursuits. Kaike’s seafront has a particularly striking promenade, and during the summer its warm waters are host to swimmers, stand-up paddleboarders, floating assault courses and banana boats. Inland adventures bring a rugged charm, with wooded hiking and biking trails winding through the surrounding foothills. Adrenaline aside, Kaike's seawater hot springs are famed for their healing properties, and public baths such as Hanakaze or Shiokaze Ashiyu make reaping their rewards easy.

Local restaurants

Waiting for a reservation will be worth your while at Narumi Sushi, where locals have long been loyal to their flavour-filled seafood offerings. Among Kaike’s handful of izakayas, Tatsumi comes out on top for its retro interiors and lengthy menu of seasonal Tottori specials. And for more Japanese delicacies, Tempura Nishimura’s namesake chef coats market-fresh fish and vegetables in the beloved batter, frying each piece to order.

The Tottori Prefecture is no stranger to folklore, with enchanting landscapes that have inspired ancient tales of matchmaking rabbits and land-defining deities for centuries. ?mizunu may have long since hauled his anchors away, but this region’s sense of place remains firmly grounded at Yado Shiontei — a 10-room ryokan between the foothills of Mount Daisen and sands of Kaike Beach. 

Honey-hued timber, sourced from Miho Bay, gives the exterior its striking finish, and Chizu cedar clads a traditional standalone teahouse within the tranquil grounds. Inside, shoji screens separate traditional tatami dining areas from contemporary bedrooms, and open-air bath tubs flow with the healing waters of Kaike’s hot springs.

But here, a love for the land comes as much from its people as it does design: head chef Masahiko Oishi lets San’in’s seasonal larder guide his multi-course menus; an in-house gallery showcases work by native ceramicists, and the sculpted gardens owe their quiet magic to artist Toshio Sakamoto.
