At the hotel

Our favourite rooms

Wilderness camps know a thing or two about rooms with a view, and Wilderness Magashi Peninsula will be no different. Each made-for-two Guest Room will sit in a secluded, standalone spot overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga — its shaded veranda primed with a roll-outbed for sleeping under the stars. There will be considerable ooh-ing and aah-ing in the Two-bedroom Villa, too, where families or gaggles of friends can come together to debrief on epic days enjoyed outdoors.

Poolside

Taking cues from the watering holes that dot the park’s plains, the main pool will offer invigorating dips between drives throughout the seasons. It will flaunt stellar views of your peaceful surroundings, which you can admire from the water or sunken deck. And if you’re staying at the villa, you’ll find just-as-jawdropping backdrops at your private pool.

Spa

The in-the-works spa area is set to soothe with treatment pods that overlook the lake, restorative massages and a fire pit-toting terrace. If you prefer a more active approach to wellness, a high-tech gym and alfresco yoga deck will join the line-up.

Packing tips

A bucket list with seeing the Big Five on it — you might just tick it off on safari.

Also

If you have children in tow, please note that some activities come with a lower age limit.

Children

Children over-six are welcome; if you’ve got under-12s in tow, you’ll need to reserve a private safari vehicle (extra charges apply). The two-bedroom villa is best for families, and by prior arrangement, a dedicated staff member can supervise children.

Sustainability efforts

Wilderness takes a threefold approach to sustainability, aiming to protect (with sensitive management between people and wildlife), empower (by investing in the local community) and educate (supporting pathways out of poverty). In total, its camps help to protect six million acres of land, highlighting conservation and bringing tourism to rural areas across the African continent. Each camp treads lightly following a set of strict standards that apply to the construction and operation of each stay. Standards cover water and energy consumption; monitoring of waste and recycling, and supply chain management. Camps are audited twice yearly and must comply with at least 85 per cent of the requirements. Any shortfalls are targeted to be addressed before the next audit. Wilderness Magashi Peninsula is 100 per cent solar powered.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Your hosts make sure that every table gets prime savannah views. Villa guests have the option of dining at home.

Dress Code

Nature-blending hues will make you a welcome addition to the landscape.

Hotel restaurant

There won’t be anything as formal in camp as a restaurant in the traditional sense. Dining at Magashi Peninsula will be a fluid affair (although thankfully not liquids only): meals will be tailored to fit with the day’s scheduled activities, but evenings will often be a chance to come together with other guests and staff over drinks before sitting down to an à-la-carte menu that’ll be guided by regional ingredients and seasonal crops, but will always provide a small choice of dishes for each course. If you’re up and out early, expect a basic breakfast at camp, bolstered by drinks and snacks on the trail, before returning to an early lunch or brunch. Similarly, guided afternoon outings are always accompanied with on-location drinks and/or nibbles, and staff can also arrange picnic lunches. If you’re staying in the villa, you can take your meals chez vous or in the communal dining area.

Hotel bar

Post-drive tipples around the fire pit may well become part of your daily routine at Wilderness Magashi Peninsula, and you’re unlikely to go thirsty with staff on hand (or just a radio call away) to take your order for drinks — hot, cold or something a little stronger.

Last orders

Banish any expectations of set dining hours and embrace the fact that food and drink will be seamlessly integrated into your day just when you want it.

Room service

A minibar in your suite is stocked with soft drinks and low-alcohol options. When hunger strikes, wander over to the lodge, where staff will be happy to help.

Wilderness Magashi Peninsula
Magashi Peninsula Camp
Akagera National Park
Rwanda

Set in the northeast of Rwanda, Akagera National Park is home to savannah, wetlands, the Big Five and, soon, Wilderness Magashi Peninsula, which will overlook Lake Rwanyakazinga and the Mitumba Mountains.

Planes

Touch down at Kigali International Airport; it’s then a 25-minute helicopter transfer to the camp, arranged through Wilderness at additional cost.

Automobiles

You’ll want to put someone else in the driving seat: self-drive routes are longer as you’ll have to come through the park’s south gate, whereas camp-arranged road transfers arrive more speedily through the north gate.

Other

Once you’ve booked your safari stays, the Wilderness team will be in touch to arrange travel between camps — for Rwanda, this usually involves scheduled or private helicopter transfers.

Worth getting out of bed for

Wilderness Magashi Peninsula may be the last stop on your Rwandan itinerary, but it’s by no means the least. Akagera National Park is renowned for its changing landscapes — woodland, savannah, mountains, lakes — and diverse wildlife flocks to its varied terrain. Seek out the Big Five, alongside hundreds of bird species, Masai giraffe and roan antelope, on game drives or night safaris; you’ll get a closer look at hippos and crocodiles on boat trips. Support the camp’s conservation efforts by helping the team to track leopards and lions; catch-and-release fish, or snooze under the stars on your terrace.

Safari adventures with Wilderness in Rwanda have the geographical range to deliver incredible variety in a shorter time frame. Start in the north with Volcanoes National Park, which is home to the mountain gorillas of Virungas, as well as two Smith-approved camps in Wilderness Bisate and Wilderness Bisate Reserve. For a finale, the diversity of wildlife and bijou, personalised set-up of Wilderness Magashi Peninsula delivers a remote Rwandan sojourn with polish.

Local restaurants

All meals and snacks are included with your stay — whether back at the lodge for dinner or out in the bush for a mid-drive pitstop.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this all-inclusive safari camp in Rwanda and unpacked their khakis and full film rolls, a full account of their sustainable-luxe break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Wilderness Magashi Peninsula in Akagera National Park…

All good things come to those who wait, and we’re not-so-patiently anticipating the opening of Wilderness Magashi Peninsula, a polished three-key safari stay. This eastern camp might conclude your Rwandan itinerary and, if so, it comes in stark — and welcome — contrast to the jungly gorilla grounds of the north. Akagera National Park is a limitless expanse with woodland, rivers and savannah, and Wilderness’ privileged perch will overlook hippo-bathing Lake Rwanyakazinga.

The varied terrain makes for an adventure-packed playground: try catch-and-release fishing, gawp at the Big Five on all-hours safaris, aid the green-minded camp’s conservation efforts by tracking lion and leopard, or take to the water on a lake or river cruise. Your David Attenborough-rivalling hosts can point out hundreds of bird species, which might soundtrack your fire pit apéritifs, alfresco meals — that work around your daily agenda — and romantic têtes-à-têtes canopied by constellations on your day-bed-toting terrace. September can’t come soon enough.
