Also

Unfortunately this remote camp is not suitable for guests with mobility issues.

At the hotel

Floodlit deck overlooking a watering hole, fire pit, wine cellar, library, boutique, laundry service and WiFi in the main lodge and suites. In rooms: air-conditioning, mosquito nets, coffee- and tea-making kit, minibar, free bottled water, yoga mats and weights, hairdryer and Healing Earth bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Standalone thatched suites are designed with a 360-degree approach to scenery: enjoy rolling desert vistas from your wraparound shaded deck and private pool; retreat to the roof terrace for an elevated perspective with your sundowners, and roll out your hot-water-bottle-warmed bed onto the deck to sleep under a sky full of stars (with clearance from the camp manager). Almost all suites at this camp are designed for two, but there’s one two-bedroom suite available for families.

Poolside

Every suite at Little Kulala comes with a private plunge pool. At the main lodge, you’ll find a larger option for cooling dips, edged by sunloungers with cinematic dune scenery in widescreen for a backdrop.

Spa

At Little Kulala, a resident spa therapist is on hand to offer massage and facial treatments in your suite at additional cost.

Packing tips

Layers to cater to the contrasting desert temperatures of day and night; an appetite for adventure will help you to make the most of your in-the-wilds locale.

Also

If you have children in tow, please note that some activities come with a particular age limit; for hot-air ballooning, say, passengers need to be at least seven years old.

Children

Little Smiths aged six or older are welcome. Little Kulala has one family suite. By prior arrangement, a dedicated staff member can supervise children; for kids aged 12 or under, you’ll need to reserve a private safari vehicle (additional charges apply).

Sustainability efforts

Wilderness takes a threefold approach to sustainability, aiming to protect (with sensitive management between people and wildlife), empower (by investing in the local community) and educate (supporting pathways out of poverty). In total, its camps help to protect six million acres of land, highlighting conservation and bringing tourism to rural areas across the African continent. Each camp treads lightly, following a set of strict standards that apply to the construction and operation of each stay. Standards cover water and energy consumption; monitoring of waste and recycling, and supply chain management. Camps are audited twice yearly and must comply with at least 85 per cent of the requirements, with any shortfalls addressed before the next audit. Wilderness Little Kulala also runs entirely on solar energy.

Food and Drink

Top Table

In such a romantic desert spot, quibbling over tables is futile.

Dress Code

Sand-flecked is generally fine, although you may want to dust off fresh threads for convivial evening meals.

Hotel restaurant

There’s nothing as formal in camp as a restaurant in the traditional sense. Dining at Little Kulala is a fluid affair (although thankfully not liquids only): meals are typically tailored to fit with the day’s scheduled activities, but evenings are a chance to come together with other guests and staff over drinks, before sitting down to an à-la-carte menu that’s guided by regional ingredients and seasonal crops. If you’re up and out early, expect a basic breakfast at camp, bolstered by drinks and snacks on the trail, before returning to an early lunch or brunch. Similarly, guided afternoon outings are always accompanied with on-location drinks and nibbles.

Hotel bar

Sundowners, apéritifs and drinks around the fire pit may well become part of your daily routine at Wilderness Little Kulala, and you’re unlikely to go thirsty with staff on hand to take your drinks order — hot, cold or something a little stronger. And the camp’s wine cellar warrants deeper investigation.

Last orders

Banish any expectations of set dining hours and embrace the fact that food and drink will be seamlessly integrated into your day just when you want it.

Room service

A minibar in your suite is stocked with soft drinks and low-alcohol options. When hunger strikes, wander over to the lodge, where staff will be happy to help.

Wilderness Little Kulala
Little Kulala Camp
Sossusvlei
Namibia

Wilderness Little Kulala is in the Kulala Wilderness Reserve in the Namib Desert — an ideal launchpad for exploring Deadvlei and the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei.

Planes

Scheduled connecting flights with Wilderness Air, as well as private transfers, touch down on the Geluk Airstrip, where you’ll be met by the Wilderness team and taken on the 30-minute drive to camp.

Automobiles

Plane transfers are more usual in these parts, but if you’re intent on making the long drive from Windhoek instead, there’s a shaded carpark on-site.

Other

Once you’ve booked your safari stays, the Wilderness team will be in touch to help arrange travel between camps, which may include charter or private small-plane flights, helicopter transfers (compulsory for some camps where there’s no airstrip) and some self-drive options for Namibia.

Worth getting out of bed for

Wilderness Little Kulala is your basecamp for two of Namibia’s notables: the red dunes of Sossusvlei — up to 300 metres high — and the time-gnarled salt pan forest of Deadvlei. Explore the dramatic desertscapes on quad-bike tracks, e-biking or with a guided nature walk. The area is home to bat-eared foxes, black-back jackals, ostrich and several species of bok. Or try a night safari, scouting the local nocturnal fauna. Stargazing in this remote Dark Sky Reserve setting is next-level pin sharp.

For a pan-Namibian adventure, make Wilderness Little Kulala your jumping-off point. From Sossusvlei, head to Smith-approved Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast, before travelling north towards the Angolan border and Wilderness Serra Cafema, set in the Kunene region, which is home to the semi-nomadic Himba people. If it’s authentic rhino tracking you’re on the lookout for, you’ll want Wilderness Desert Rhino Camp in Damaraland in the mix.

Local restaurants

All meals and snacks are included with your stay — whether back at the lodge for dinner or out in the bush for a mid-drive pitstop.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this remote camp in the Namib Desert and emptied the sand from their hiking boots, a full account of their away-from-it-all break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Wilderness Little Kulala beside Sossusvlei…

Deserts conjure thoughts of vast emptiness, quiet and nature untamed: thankfully, at Wilderness Little Kulala, these are qualities you can admire, sundowner in hand, from your suite’s roof deck, or lounging beside your private pool.

This boutique safari camp is deftly calibrated for contemplative downtime. On designated nights, you can sleep out beneath a sky full of stars. Standalone suites echo the landscape with earthy hues and dune-like thatched roofs, but come with enough comforts to afford a sweet night’s sleep.

Batteries recharged, you’ll be ready to take on all that your Namib neighbourhood has to offer, starting with easy access to the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei, as well as Deadvlei’s striking salt pan forest. Take a nature walk at night, try e-biking in the dunes, or join a guided trip to track down springbok, jackals and ostriches. A pocket of desert that’s not so empty and quiet after all.
