Setting

Newfoundland bay-watcher

Warblers at Trinity consists of two luxuriously kitted out houses, paired with tailor-made treats, ranging from beach-front lobster feasts to forest picnics and boat tours. As the widescreen ocean scenery suggests, this is a remote pocket of Newfoundland where you’ll want to wallow in nature — not least yomping along its world-class trails. But, as the abundance of window seats in your shiplap bolthole implies, this is also a halcyon spot in which to do nothing at all…

Need to know

Rooms

Two houses; two-bedroom English Sunrise and three-bedroom First Flight.

Check–Out

11am, and check-in is at 4pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates at Warblers at Trinity are room-only, but some pantry basics are provided, and your hosts are happy to stock the kitchen with groceries on request and with notice. A minimum stay of three nights (for 2025) and four nights (for 2026) applies.

Also

Unfortunately this remote and untamed spot is not suitable if you have limited mobility, and neither house is adapted for wheelchair access.

At the hotel

Wharf and jetty cabin (‘stage’); private beach; a stand-up paddleboard and two kayaks to borrow; and each house has a garden, fire pit and/or campfire. In houses: free WiFi, full kitchen, TVs, wellies, beach towels, bathrobes and local bath products. First Flight also has a pool table.

Our favourite rooms

Which house you plump for will be about the size of your clan: English Sunrise has golden-hued coziness, thanks to its sunny palette, covered porch and two ensuite bedrooms aloft. Three-bedroom First Flight is a bon viveur’s bonanza, flaunting generously sized living spaces on all three floors, plus an abundance of alfresco areas — countered by peaceful nooks and window seats primed for panorama-wrapped downtime.

Spa

If you’re staying in First Flight, yoga mats and free weights are provided and there’s a Peloton bike in the sunroom.

Packing tips

Books, books, books, plus cozy layers for starlit nights around the fire pit.

Also

In the works for this swathed-in-nature stay are a sauna hut and hot tub on the beach — shared by both houses.

Children

Little Smiths aged 12 or older are very welcome at Warblers at Trinity — an age limit the owners decided on because of the outdoorsy area, that’s shaped by the elements and easier for tweens and teens to enjoy.

Food and Drink

Top Table

At First Flight, there’s a larger, round table beside the kitchen and the option of a more casual set-up in the sunroom. English Sunrise’s recessed dining space has the feel of a cozy den; and both houses have breakfast bars.

Dress Code

In the comfort of your own house, anything goes.

Hotel restaurant

Each house has a full kitchen with enough kit to trigger envy in a professional chef — a range cooker, double fridge-freezer and restaurant-levels of crockery and pans, plus a barbecue on the deck. Notable additions at First Flight include a stand mixer in the kitchen for whipping up cakes and bakes, and a smoker and pizza oven to bolster your alfresco cooking skills. If cooking and holidaying don’t go hand-in-hand for you, take a night off and book ahead for a private chef to do the kitchen spec justice.

Hotel bar

Your house is stocked with a small selection of bottles that you’ll want to top up with your grocery shopping, and First Flight has a dedicated bar fridge. Cue sundowners on the porch, wine flowing at the dinner table, and digestifs around the fire pit.

There’s free on-site parking beside each house. Please note that the last few kilometres before Warblers are along a dirt track that is sometimes liable to pot holes, so be sure to take the steep(ish) driveway down to the cottages with caution.

Worth getting out of bed for

Warblers at Trinity is a launchpad to exploring Newfoundland and Labrador’s surf-and-turf wilderness. You could stay for months and never exhaust its network of hiking paths, including the famed Skerwink Trail — a five-kilometre-long coastal loop that serves up teetering sea stacks, eagle sightings and occasional glimpses of whales and seasonal icebergs. And Fort Point Lighthouse, a short drive away, has a rich history (it started out as an 18th-century fortification) and equally engaging scenery.

On top of this, your hosts are happy to arrange bespoke experiences. Take a guided geological hike, or enjoy an expert-led boat trip to dip into the area’s maritime heritage; a private tour of the local archives is your deep-dive into Newfoundland’s rich history. A chef-prepared private seafood feast might mean a lobster boil-up on the beach or a cod-fry on the wharf. Your own personal guide can take you to an enchanting forest for a gourmet picnic, or foraging.

Local restaurants

A short drive away in Port Rexton, Fishers’ Loft Inn reels in discerning gastronomes for its season-inspired refined plates — crafted from a distinctly Newfoundland larder of local fish and seafood, foraged ingredients and whatever’s ripe for the plucking from the restaurant’s kitchen garden and greenhouse (no walk-ins). For lauded fish and chips served to gingham-topped tables in a casual harborside setting, head to daytime dining spot, Dock Marina in Trinity. And if it’s brunch or a casual lunch you’re after, Brightside Bistro in East Trinity dishes salads, pasta and poke bowls, as well as a smorgasbord of ‘bites’ including tacos, croquettes and sliders.

Local cafés

Seasonal canteen Trinity Cabins Café is our tip for epic breakfast sandwiches and Friday-night takeaway pizza. Clapboarded coffee shop Two Whales in Port Rexton is a co-operative-owned spot overlooking Robinhoods Bay for fresh bakes, artful coffees and vegetarian lunches spun with homegrown produce. Waffle cones filled with colorful scoops of handmade ice cream are a worthy walker’s reward at the Trinity outpost of Sweet Rock Ice Cream

Mother Nature is the artist in residence at forest-wrapped coastal retreat Warblers at Trinity. For centuries, she’s been sculpting the Newfoundland coastline’s craggy contours, harnessing the power of wind and tide to breathtaking effect. A duo of houses at Warblers give you front row seats to this ever-evolving project — their creature comforts taking the edge off this remote locale’s elemental forces, with cozy interiors where the spec is top-notch and the living space ample.

Their set-up is as sociable as it is cosseting, with oodles of outdoor space, barbecues and fire pits, full kitchens and dining rooms primed for sybaritic suppers. Arranging for a private chef to do the legwork for you is just one of the bespoke experiences that your hosts Amanda and Bill are happy to sort. History-focused boat tours, woodland picnics and geology-rocking hikes are also in the mix, and starlit conversations on the porch are set to be on everyone’s wishlist.
