Wandering Buffalo is positioned on the eastern edge of downtown Bozeman in Montana — a five-minute stroll (or two-minute bike ride) to Main Street.

Planes

The nearest place to fly into is Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport, 15 to 20 minutes away by car. You can easily grab a taxi, Uber or rental car at the airport, and staff can pre-book a transfer for you on request.

Automobiles

You’ll want your own set of wheels for exploring the area’s must-visit spots, like Yellowstone Park and skiing at Big Sky. The hotel offers overnight parking for $20 a night.

Worth getting out of bed for

Echoing the hotel’s outfitter-inspired atmosphere, the Wandering Buffalo makes an idyllic basecamp for exploring Montana's wilds. The local ‘M’ Trail is the perfect place to start, snaking up through lush leafy valley to scenic ridgelines and spectacular views over Bozeman. If you want your great outdoors even greater, the vast and varied Yellowstone Park is close enough for a day-trip.  

For pedal-powered adventure, the nearby Bridger Mountains offer cycling trails through pine-peppered forests — or just borrow a bike from the hotel and skoot around town. Dino-philes should make a beeline to the Museum of the Rockies and its vast fossil collection. If piste-swooshing is more your thing, you’ll find some top skiing spots within easy reach too. Just 18 miles away, Bridger Bowl is known for its challenging runs and abundant snowfall, or an hour by road takes you to Big Sky Resort — a better option for skiers of all levels.  

With easy access to surrounding streams, anglers can get hooked up with top fly-fishing spots. Upon returning to the hotel, pull up a chair around the communal fire pit and regale fellow guests with tales of the one that got away. 

Local restaurants

A short stroll into town and just off the main drag is Little Star Diner, where wonderfully woody interiors and an open kitchen set the stage for a colorful mix of seasonal small plates and farm-to-fork produce — their spicy noodle salad is a real standout. A little further along, Blackbird serves up wood-fired pillowy dough topped with gooey mozzarella and other Italian fare. 

Local cafés

For a genuine slice of vintage Bozeman, you won’t find better than Western Café on Main Street. From sticky cinnamon rolls to silver dollar hot cakes, the food is as classic and comforting as its 19th-century setting. For funkier fare, Jam! is a jazzy brunch spot serving more creative twists on traditional fare – and popular enough to consider booking ahead.  

Local bars

Pink velvet upholstery, damask-covered walls and low vintage lighting all add to the old-school glamour of Devil's Toboggan. Set in an old factory in Bozeman’s historic Cannery District, this swish speakeasy-inspired bar plates elevated finger food alongside top-shelf cocktails. For a more casual night out, local favorite Plonk pairs an extensive wine list with carefully curated playlists and local artworks. Plus, it’s only a 15-minute totter back to the Wandering Buffalo afterwards.

The city of Bozeman is a slice of Big Sky Country that still hums with its pioneer past — infused with that mellow Montana drawl. Once an unremarkable roadside inn on the town’s eastern edge, the reinvented Wandering Buffalo has bottled that frontier spirit and blended it with the easy charm of a cozy log cabin. A few taxidermic vestiges remain — a formidable white bear has glowered over the lobby for more than 30 years — but still sit perfectly in step with the hotel’s updated aesthetic.  

You may not have a colt tethered outside, but you can saddle up on one of the hotel’s bikes and head downtown, where taprooms, art galleries and brunch joints buzz less than a mile away. Still, it’s the pull of the great outdoors that truly draws guests here — that irresistible promise of cinematic horizons, trout-teeming rivers and wide-open wilderness waiting just beyond the city limits.
