Our favourite rooms

With four high-spec suites — each a timbered triumph of modernity, tactile layering and mountain-backdropped outdoor space — to choose between them is surely hair-splitting. It’s worth noting, however, that the top-floor suites don’t adhere to the traditional notion of having a separate bedroom and living space, but do earn bonus romance points for their in-the-eaves setting. Let the differing bathroom set-ups be your compass, leaving you the enviable dilemma of whether to choose a private sauna or statement tub.

Poolside

Lake Bohinj is your go-to for cooling dips, or make time for a plunge in the adults-only outdoor whirlpool at Hotel Bohinj.

Spa

Beyond your in-suite sauna or bath tub, there’s no specific wellness at Vila Muhr. But you’ll have access to next door’s adults-only spa at Hotel Bohinj (included in the room rate), where you’ll find Finnish and Turkish saunas, a relaxation lounge with views down to the lake, a garden-facing terrace and spa pool, and two treatment rooms for facial or body therapies (you’ll need to book ahead). The concierge at Vila Muhr can arrange private yoga classes, too.

Packing tips

Whether you dress with the full feather-toting lodenhut is your decision, but bringing an appetite for active days in the great outdoors will serve you well.

Also

Vila Muhr’s story begins with hunting (King Alexander of Yugoslavia hunted from here in the 1920s). The hotel’s insignia — a bear-flanked shield — hails from the original owner, Adolf Muhr. Thankfully, things have now turned a little less grizzly [sic].

Pet‐friendly

Pups are welcome to stay in rooms, although please note that they’re not allowed in the restaurant. A charge of €25 a night for each pooch includes treats and a dog bed. See more pet-friendly hotels in Lake Bohinj.

Children

Very welcome: little Smiths aged six to 12 can stay in your suite for a nightly charge of €50 each, and babysitting can be arranged with notice from €30 an hour.

Sustainability efforts

Its National Park setting is all the visual prompt staff at Vila Muhr needed to take their environmental responsibilities seriously. Water- and energy-saving measures were incorporated into the hotel’s renovations — including the installation of a heat-pump system. There’s no single-use plastic at the villa; cleaning materials are Earth-kind, and at the restaurant, ingredients are sourced regionally and menus planned with seasonality in mind.

Top Table

Cosy on a banquette against the wall in winter; or beside an arched window in summer.

Dress Code

Nod to your wholesome montane setting with tactile layering — fine knits, wool tailoring, borg and shearling.

Hotel restaurant

A cosily lit, timbered dining room, draped with faux furs and decorated with wall-mounted antlers, sets the rustic scene for a celebration of Alpine cuisine at Muhr — the hotel’s soon-to-open fine-dining restaurant. Chef Davor Arnautović will oversee seasonal plates that showcase regional produce, presented with contemporary attention to detail. For breakfast, there’s an impressive choice of dishes cooked to order, as well as a buffet of healthier, lighter options and baked goods. Talking of which, afternoon tea next door at Hotel Bohinj is an elegant affair of dainty cakes and slow-steeped, loose-leaf brews.

Hotel bar

There's no dedicated bar at Vila Muhr, but apéritifs and slow-sipped glasses of wine are only a walk away at Hotel Bohinj.

Local cafés

It’s not just the crowning stack of onion rings that elevate the burgers at Ribčev Laz eatery, Foksner  — the mountain views from its covered terrace make this fast food to linger over.

Local bars

Karakter in Ribčev Laz is a bar and music venue that also serves light bites and locally distilled gin. Sturdy benches and terrace tables bring picnic-style sociability to chilled beers, pizza and ice-cream at Okrepčevalnica Jezero-Baza.

On our first night in Slovenia, a local had some advice for us: ‘Tourists go to Lake Bled, but Slovenians go to Lake Bohinj.' And as soon as we arrived at this spectacular body of water, two hours’ drive from the capital Ljubljana, we could see why. Bordered by wildflower-filled meadows and forests, and overlooked by the snow-topped Julian Alps, Lake Bohinj is Slovenia at its most dramatic and beautiful.

And if you’re searching for an indulgent place to stay on its shoreline, you couldn’t do much better than Vila Muhr, which is where Mr Smith and I spent the first two nights of our walking holiday in early June.

Built in 1902, Vila Muhr was originally an aristocratic hunting lodge, before becoming a retreat for the Yugoslav royal family (other regal visitors during this time included Prince George, Duke of Kent). Last year, it relaunched as the suite-only off-shoot of Hotel Bohinj next-door (which boasts 62 compact but stylishly contemporary rooms that are a bit more affordable — I recommend the Superior Suite for an unparallelled mountain view).

The lakeside village Vila Muhr sits in is a bustling hub with a shop, a few restaurants and one pretty church. It’s a brilliant jumping-off point for mountain hikes, meadow strolls, biking, swimming and rock-climbing, or simply lazing on one of the many little shingle beaches that line the lake’s crystal-clear waters.

There are just four suites at Vila Muhr. We stayed in the Princess Olga junior suite, which had moody lighting, furry throws and wood-cladding, giving it the feel of an ultra-luxe chalet. There was a dining table and a fire, too. I could see this cosy hideaway being particularly atmospheric in the snow. The bathroom was big and stocked with Aesop products. The bed was huge and comfortable. And there was also a wraparound balcony that looked out over the hotel’s lawn to the lake and mountains on one side.

They take food very seriously at Vila Muhr and especially breakfast, so make time for this multi-course extravaganza, which showcases all sorts of local produce and traditional Slovenian fare. We started with a tasting of five different honeys — Slovenians are big beekeepers — with a selection of freshly baked breads, followed by homemade jams, fresh juices, a fruit plate, homemade granola, yoghurt, local cured meats and cheeses. We were also given tasters of Slovenian cream cheeses, smoked trout, chicken pâté and buckwheat spread. (Needless to say, after the first morning, you can request an edit of this huge spread.)

In the evening, we sampled exquisite little canapés by Chef Davor Arnautovic: a delicate ‘taco’ stuffed with mountain herbs; a blini with cream cheese and alpine caviar; and a playful ‘twig’, made of a mushroom tuile served on a bed of edible flowers. Nearby there were also some fun, more informal places to eat including an alfresco burger-and-beer joint by the lake, which really hit the spot after a long hike up to Mount Vogel.

Vila Muhr has an impressive wine cellar, featuring smart names from around the world, plus a big selection of Slovenian wines, which I explored during a fascinating two-hour tasting with the sommelier Nejc Jakopic. The bar also mixes a decent martini, using local gin made with alpine botanicals — we sipped some on the lawn, watching the sun go down over the mountains (my only gripe was the piped music).

The spa is a short walk away in neighbouring Hotel Bohinj, but it can be reached very easily via a private tunnel. It’s small but smart, with a generous sauna, a steam room, cold showers, ice and a relaxation room with a salt wall. There was also an outdoor plunge pool with a gorgeous view of the mountainous skyline. Booking is recommended, which sounded like a faff but there was actually no problem getting the slot I wanted and it ensured there was plenty of space for everyone.

Mr Smith and I left Vila Muhr rested, restored and — believe it or not, after all that breakfast — hungry for more of Slovenia.
