Setting

In the Balearics’ embrace

Opening-soon Vestige Binidufà is the second of two boutique hotels set on a centuries-old Menorcan estate and will be adopting the three Rs — refined, restful, rustic — of its Smith-approved sister, Vestige Son Ermità. You'll be able to saunter across the estate to Son Ermità for gym workouts, seafood dining and pool dips; and at your Binidufà base, the latter will come paired with plant-based meals and wholesome activities. Each bedroom will have a private terrace or garden, placing the coastal countryside on your verdant doorstep.

Sustainability efforts

Hundreds of native plants have been sowed alongside the restaurant-bolstering kitchen garden and citrus groves on this 800-hectare estate. Its green-minded ethos is felt in its traditional building and farming techniques, local staff and suppliers, and restoration of the finca’s original features.

Top Table

Until the hotel opens, the jury’s out on this one.

Dress Code

Breezy Balearic – linen shirts, espadrille sandals, cheesecloth sundresses.

Hotel restaurant

Eating your five-a-day is going to get a whole lot more exciting with the arrival of Mesura, a plant-based restaurant with Middle Eastern inspiration. And if you’re not ready to commit to fully vegetarian dining, you’ll be able to add some sustainably caught fish or estate-reared meat to your dinner.

Worth getting out of bed for

Antics at Vestige Binidufà will be of the breeze-tickled type. You could trace the coastal Camí de Cavalls hiking loop, which will wind you from the estate to red-sand Cala Calderer, or expert guides will lead you along lesser-known trails on foot, by bike or on horseback. Private boat charters will whizz you around the isle and to its hidden coves; staff will also be able to arrange various watersports or 4WD excursions. Gentler thrills will come in the form of wanders around Ciutadella de Menorca, estate-led cooking classes and evenings spent stargazing.

Local restaurants

Restaurant Ca N'Olga’s may be set in a quiet sidestreet, but its indoor-outdoor dining room and generously portioned Menorca plates are something to shout about. At Fornells Bay’s Ca Na Marga, the Argentinian chef grills local meat and vegetables over an open fire. Tuck into casserole-style dishes and rich lobster rice at Restaurante La Guapa Fornells, a locally loved spot for laidback dining.

Local cafés

Colour-clad Bubu’s Corner brightens up strolls around Cituadella de Menorca with plant-based bocadillos, speciality brews and concept-shop souvenirs. The Balearics’ favourite pastry tempts at Ensaïmades Menorca Can Pons in all shapes and sizes.

Local bars

At low-key La Margarete, classic cocktails, beers and burgers are washed down in the glow of the terrace’s fairylights. Isabella Beach Club’s picturesque perch overlooking the sea is made all the more photogenic by platters of sushi, vibrant tipples and a sunset backdrop.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this soon-to-open boutique hotel in the Balearics and unpacked their market finds and cooking-class recipes, a full account of their wholesome break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Vestige Binidufà in Menorca…

We’re hot on duos — our name is a giveaway — so we’ll allow a bit of two-timing when it comes to in-the-works Vestige Binidufà, the incoming partner of Smith stablemate Vestige Son Ermità. This couple of Balearic boutique hotels will share the same rolling estate in northern Menorca — set a stroll away from the isle’s coastal paths and red-sand beaches — as well as 11 keys each and a mod-farmhouse design.

Binidufà will be the slightly more earthy of the two: each room and suite comes with a private garden or terrace, and its lunch-only restaurant, Mesura, will spotlight plant-based cooking, homegrown produce and Middle Eastern flavours. Added polished frills can be sought out at Son Ermità — a romp or shuttle across the 800-hectare grounds — with its high-tech gym and seafood dinners.

Two’s company, for sure — but the romantic coupling on this Vestige estate is one we'd willingly crash.
