Camp programming (including scheduled yoga), nightly campfires, board games, yoga mats and blocks to borrow, water refill stations, hot drinks, guest experience coordinators and a small boutique. In rooms: USB battery packs, battery-powered fans and bedside lanterns, a gas fireplace, and organic Essential Oils bath products.

Our favourite rooms

All tents have gas fireplaces and private sun-dosed decks, meaning you’ll be toasty whatever the weather. But if you want to spy constellations from under the covers, bag one of the Stargazer tents for its viewing window, perfectly positioned above the pillows. For group get-togethers, the Mount Hood Suite connects two ensuite tents via a deck with private outdoor space.

Packing tips

The camp falls into quiet time after 10pm, so be sure to bring a good book (and a pair of star-spotting binoculars) to cozy up with.

Also

There’s no WiFi here — and cell service can be temperamental — plus you won’t find any TVs around, meaning evenings tend to be filled with stargazing and fireside music and s’mores.

Pet‐friendly

Sustainability efforts

As part of the company’s Mindful Approach to development and operations, Under Canvas has built its camp to integrate with Columbia River Gorge’s natural landscapes, ensuring environmental impacts are limited so flora and fauna can continue to thrive. Day-to-day runnings are designed to minimize light pollution, waste and water usage. To encourage guests’ immersion in nature, WiFi is not available and electricity has been replaced with rechargeable battery packs, which power fans and provide USB ports. Bathrooms feature pull-chain showers and low-flow toilets, and are stocked with organic, all-natural bath products. And the cutlery is biodegradable and compostable. Cafe-style dining is offered for breakfast and dinner, incorporating items sourced from local suppliers wherever possible. Under Canvas works closely with DarkSky International to minimize light pollution and protect the night sky.

Hotel restaurant

Embers is the camp’s café-style dining spot: it has tables outdoors for alfresco dining and others indoors, and is open for breakfast and dinner. For the former, there’s barista-style coffees, avocado toast, yogurt and granola. Laidback suppers spotlight seasonal West Coast seafood. Signature dishes include the Canvas Burger, chevre and beet salad, and a PNW rice bowl. Several times a week, you can expect a side of live acoustic music, too. If you’re heading to the trails for the day, there’ll be grab-and-go snacks available to buy.

A scenic hour’s drive from Portland, Oregon, Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge is set in a peaceful wooded valley on the national scenic area’s Washington State side, with views of Mount Hood, and is just 15 miles from White Salmon, Washington.

Planes

Portland International Airport is around 75 minutes away by road. If you’re considering driving from Seattle Tacoma International, you’ll need to allow around four and a half hours to reach the camp.

Automobiles

There’s parking at Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge; the main lot is a short walk from the lobby tent, and you can either walk to reception from there, or staff can collect your baggage by golf cart.

Worth getting out of bed for

The breathtaking geographical feature that Under Canvas Columbia River Gorge is named for takes top billing: set in a jaw-dropping canyon that runs for over 80 miles — up to 4,000-feet deep in places — it forms the border between Washington and Oregon. Guest experience coordinators can recommend favorite local walks, excursions and sights worth seeing. But as well as mountain scenery, this area is ribboned with vines, too — and there are 10 wineries or vineyards for tours and tastings within 10 miles of the camp. 

Grab a picnic and go on a guided hike to witness the majesty of Mount Hood. Land steelhead and salmon on a fishing boat trip along the Columbia River (seasonal). Try stand-up paddleboarding along its calmer stretches; or sign up for whitewater rafting down the White Salmon River, followed by lunch and an afternoon on a sun-drenched patio at a local brewery in Hood River. Wildflowers, tranquil forests and awe-prompting waterfalls are yours to marvel at on a guided Botanical Discovery hike. Or set your pulse racing with a mountain biking tour along scenic ridge lines and led by an expert guide.

Designed to satisfy pre- and post-adventure appetites, a regionally inspired menu back at base means you’re unlikely to dine outside of camp.
