At the hotel

Free WiFi throughout, and bikes to borrow. In rooms: Nespresso coffee machine, tea-making kit, minibar with complimentary soft drinks, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and Le Labo bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Take the plunge on Santiago (the Presidential Suite), which comes with its own patio and pool, as well as a red-marble bath.

Poolside

Dip in the cool of a large courtyard, where a heated pool (open from 8am to 8pm) is fringed by palms, then retire to your striped sunlounger and the shade of a tasseled parasol. Little Smiths will love the super-shallow end for paddling, although it’s the pool bar’s menu of sips and bites where you’ll want to do most of your splashing.

Spa

There’s no wellness space at the hotel, but in partnership with a local spa, you can enjoy health and beauty services in the comfort of your own (or another) hotel room. A one-hour deep tissue massage is MXN2,700, for example.

Packing tips

An underwater video camera, for shooting your efforts in the epic waves.

Children

All ages are welcome: there’s a choice of rooms that sleep four and babysitting can be arranged, subject to availability, 24 hours’ notice, and an extra charge.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Take cocktails to the roof terrace, or pick a spot in the shaded courtyard, where marble tables and embroidered armchairs sit beneath the perma-blue sky.

Dress Code

Organic cottons, as a nod to Todos Santos’ trading-post history.

Hotel restaurant

The jade-tiled open kitchen of 1890 specialises in European cuisine crafted with hyper-fresh local produce, and paired with any of 400 fine wines from the cellar. Feast on scallop flatbreads and hamachi sashimi; move onto aged cotija-cheese gnocchi, and finish with grilled mango and lime ice cream, for example. Compliments to the head chef, who cut his teeth at London’s Michelin-starred River Café, no less.

Hotel bar

La Copa is the toast of Todos Santos, with wall paintings depicting the history of the town and cocktails on cue in a moody, soft-lit salon. Take a seat on a studded leather armchair, summon the trolley to your table, and watch the mixologist work magic on the spot. The house special — Minero — is a perfumed masterpiece that meddles mezcal with maraschino and hints of violet.

Last orders

1890 is open all day long, with breakfast served from 8am, lunch from 1pm to 3pm, and dinner from 5pm to 10pm. La Copa serves drinks and light bites from noon till 9.30pm.

Room service

A selected room service menu is available from 8am to 9pm daily.

Mexico

Todos Santos Boutique Hotel is tucked away on a sun-kissed side street in the centre of arty Todos Santos, on the surf-tastic Pacific coast of Mexico’s Baja California peninsula.

Planes

The nearest major airport is Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) in San Jose del Cabo, which has direct flights from many major cities in the US, including Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago, and now a route straight from Frankfurt too. From the airport it’s an hour and 15 minutes to the hotel; transfers can be arranged for $210 each way.

Automobiles

To explore beyond the sunny streets of Todos Santos, you’ll need your own set of wheels. It’s best to hire from the airport, and there’s free valet parking when you arrive at the hotel.

Worth getting out of bed for

Todos Santos Boutique Hotel is an ideal launchpad for local exploration of this characterful town and beyond. Browse contemporary artwork at La Sonrisa de la Muerte gallery, pick up artisan jewellery made with high-grade Mexican silver at Muan, and revamp your wardrobe with raw-cotton threads from Zócalo. When you’re ready to hit the sand, head to Los Cerritos for swimming and shoreline strolls, La Pastora for serious surf breaks, and La Cachora for a sunset walk along the dunes (for the beach shuttle schedule, just ask at reception). For spectacular hiking, go with a guide to Punta Lobos, where you’ll be rewarded with show-stopping views of the ocean and mountains. Wherever you’re off to, it’s never a bad idea to stock up on supplies at Agricole farm shop, for the full-to-bursting sandwiches and punnets of succulent strawberries.

Local restaurants

Award-winning chef Javier Plascencia runs the kitchen at farm-to-table restaurant Jazamango; our tip is the wood-grilled chocolate clams. Housed in the old sugar mill, Oystera hits the sweet spot for platters heaving with premium seafood and street fare, with an almost-obligatory bloody mary on the side. Beachside The Green Room is worth a short drive up the coast for the surf-and-turf skewers and tuna tostadas, accompanied by full frontal views of Pacific waves.

Local cafés

Stop by Taller 17 for all your morning caffeine needs, plus buttery fresh-baked pastries and flavourful cheese and jalapeño scones. On the road out of town is the esteemed coffee roastery Doce Cuarenta, where you can pair your brew with smashed avocado toast or a chunky beef-brisket baguette.

Local bars

Cien Palmas is a sandy and shaded escape in the heart of town, serving tamarind margaritas and coconut sours at all hours. Mezcal tasting is on the menu at El Refugio, giving you the chance to try small-batch spirits expertly sourced from across Mexico.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this historic hotel in Baja California and unpacked their handcrafted baskets and colorful blankets, a full account of their Pacific-side break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Todos Santos Boutique Hotel in Mexico…

This is a place with a story. You know it from the moment you pull up to the entrance of Todos Santos Boutique Hotel, on an unassuming, bougainvillea-lined side street in a central spot of its namesake town.

First, there’s the treasure chest (locked), which brings to mind fables of Spanish ships loaded with imperial booty, stopping here en route to San Francisco. Then, in the lobby, a bullet-pocked mural — it was painted by a pupil of Diego Rivera, and found itself in the firing line when an army general was in hiding here during the Mexican revolution.

Inside, the tales continue, with a Catholic mission giving each room its individual character, and the history of Todos Santos laid out in sepia-toned paint around the walls of the bar. Now, there’s a new chapter being written; it’s a polished page-turner featuring spectacular dining, fireside cocktails, personal service and precious privacy — and you, perhaps, if you care to join the narrative.
