Hotel restaurant

The hotel’s central restaurant, Bang, is helmed by chef Justin Dingle-Garciyya who has deftly devised a menu inspired by his travels around Thailand. Sharing-style plates — vegetable and truffle dumplings, sesame-dressed eggplant, blue crab stir fries and seafood curries — put a modern twist on established classics. Mid-century modern interiors kick up the cool even more, with a rich red palette, lofty ceilings and moody lighting. If you’re looking to stock up on supplies, the Box is packed with Melbourne-made goodies and local wines.

Hotel bar

It’s all tacos, tostadas and punchy margs up at the guests-only Roof, a spirited bar with fringed parasols, laidback seating and sweeping views across FItzroy and the CBD.

Last orders

Bang serves breakfast from 7am to 10am (11am on weekends); lunch, 11am to 3pm, and dinner from 5pm to 10pm (Tuesday to Saturday). Roof is open from 4pm on Fridays, noon on Saturdays and pours until 9.30pm.

Room service

Planes

Melbourne’s international airport is a 30-minute drive from the hotel. Private transfers can be arranged for AU$150 each way.

Trains

Parliament train station is your closest and has direct links around the city. From the station, walk over to Leicester Street, where you can hop on the number 11 tram to Rose Street, a two-minute walk from the hotel.

Automobiles

You won’t need a car if you’re sticking to the city. But if you do decide to bring a set of wheels, there’s a carpark across from the hotel that you’re welcome to use from Monday to Friday for AU$55 a day.

Worth getting out of bed for

Stick to the StandardX’s creative local co-ords and start your Fitzroy induction at Oigåll Projects, a modern gallery filled with immersive exhibitions. There’s more art to enjoy at the Rose Street Artists Market, where up-and-coming creatives display their work each weekend. If you prefer your markets be filled with food stalls, head to the Fitzroy Mills on Saturday for lots of locally grown and flavour-packed produce. Those who need their city escapes with a dose of green space can find their fix in one of the neighbourhood’s three surrounding parks: the Carlton, Edinburgh and Fitzroy gardens.

Local restaurants

Down stylish Gertrude Street, Cutler & Co have made a name for themselves courtesy of their refined bistro fare (maple-glazed duck and artichokes dosed in walnut sauce give a flavour of what’s to come) and art deco-esque interiors. Plant-based Smith + Daughters is loved by locals for its industrial decor, social atmosphere and ever-evolving sharing dishes, sometimes filled with comforting ramen broths, other times with wood-fired pizzette. Poodle Bar & Bistro is set across two converted Victorian mansions and plates European-inspired fare with a flavourful edge — go for the chef’s sharing selection if you’d rather not deliberate.

Local cafés

Archie’s All Day is on hand to cure the toughest of hangovers with its no-time-is-too-early burgers, brunches and fresh brews. If you’re ready to go again, they also serve cocktails and pints during the early evening. Mile End Bagels prepares theirs, wood fired and overflowing with all types of toppings, including crunchy peanut butter and homemade jam for the sweet American classic.

Local bars

Old-school French interiors greet patrons at the Everleigh, where cocktails are tailored to you (quite literally — barkeeps will ask you a series of questions when you arrive and custom concoctions based on your answers). If you’d rather stick to off-the-peg tipples, Bar Olo has a lengthy list of local wines and classic cocktails.

The Standard hotel group has its storied aesthetic down to a fine art, but the group’s latest offshoot brand — at the StandardX, Melbourne — returns to the edgier days of its youth, bringing to the fore its trademark creative aesthetic.

Breaking step with the group’s flagship Hollywood design, this outpost takes its cues from Fitzroy’s local artists, instead. City-based creatives including macramé specialist Sarah Parkes (Smalltown) and painter Dane Lovett were called on to add character to the light-bathed lobby, and Jane Sinclair’s carved woodworks warm modern rooms, dotted with playful touches. But city-spun threads aren’t just woven into its interiors: organic, Melbourne-based wines are paired with seasonal sharing plates at all-day Bang; the aptly named Roof serves margaritas against a sweeping city backdrop, and the 'hood's revamped warehouses and studios are all within walking distance. Bringing such vibrant design to one of Melbourne’s more artsy neighbourhoods is a creative collaboration that will run and run.
