Setting

Six on the beach

Opulence, ocean views and wow-factor converge at The Six Weligama, a cluster of six luxe villas on Sri Lanka’s southern shores. Inspired by different beaches around the world, each decadent dwelling is designed for high-end, low-tempo pursuits: wake to widescreen shoreline views and a floating breakfast in your private pool, prepare for the day with a Balinese massage, then have your personal butler conjure you up a punchy arrack aperitif before dining by starlight on the terrace.

Need to know

Rooms

Six villas.

Check–Out

11am; check-in, 2pm. Both are flexible on request, subject to availability and an extra charge.

More details

Rates include breakfast at your villa, served buffet-style, à la carte or (our favourite) on a floating tray in your private pool. Options include Sri Lankan roti, waffles and pancakes, granola bowls, and any number of fresh smoothies, teas and coffees.

Also

All villas at The Six Weligama have ramp access, and ground floors come with wheelchair-accessible bedrooms (two each in Amed, Kaimu, Kyra and Noosa; one each in Bari and Cies). The upper levels of each villa are reached via stairs only.

At the hotel

In villas: free WiFi, TV, air-conditioning, coffee machine, free minibar, free bottled water, sauna, bathrobes, slippers and locally made bath products. Each fully serviced villa also comes with personalised butler service and a dedicated team of eight staff members.

Our favourite rooms

Not only is Villa Cies at the far end of the beach (meaning you’ll only have neighbours on one side), but it’s also the biggest of the bunch, with a whopping 599 square metres of space. A traditional Sinhalese-inspired veranda provides a focal point for poolside breakfasts, cabana cocktails and dinner under the stars. Bonus: there’s a movie and games room to keep the little Smiths occupied while you kick back with your caipirinha.

Poolside

Your private pool lies a few short steps across the terrace from your lounge area. Slide in for a floating breakfast or have the dedicated mixologist fix you a tipple to sip in the shade of your beach cabana.

Spa

On request, your bedroom can be transformed into a tranquil treatment room, where therapists from a neighbouring spa deliver holistic healing in the form of Swedish, shiatsu, hot stone and Balinese massages.

Packing tips

A good zoom lens for capturing frame-worthy action shots of baby turtles during hatching season (December to May) without crowding them. Otherwise, your personal butler will take care of even the most outlandish requests for forgotten essentials.

Also

Gym kit can be stacked in your villa on request; personal trainers and yoga and meditation sessions can also be arranged, and surfboards are available to rent for a fee. Just ask your butler about any and all of the above.

Pet‐friendly

Dogs aren’t permitted at The Six Weligama. See more pet-friendly hotels in Weligama.

Children

Welcome. Each villa has four bedrooms and baby cots can be added on request. Kids can enjoy movie nights, cooking demos and a rockpool that’s safe for swimming. There’s a children’s menu, and babysitting is available on request.

Sustainability efforts

The Six Weligama takes sustainability seriously: save for the TVs and air-conditioning, everything you’ll find in your villa — furnishings, fabrics, artwork, antique pieces — was made within 30 miles of the resort. Similarly, produce is sourced from nearby suppliers and seafood snared by Sri Lankan fishing boats is always cooked and served the same day. Sensors and LED bulbs in villas help to conserve energy and locally made bath products come in recycled (and recyclable) packaging. A weekly beach clean ensures the shoreline remains safe for wildlife, not least the protected turtles that nest here year-round and hatch young (in their thousands) between December and May.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Breakfast served on a floating tray in your own infinity pool is the winning spot.

Dress Code

Gleaming white swimwear, bold tropical prints and pressed linens for poolside selfies; layers and loungewear for breezy starlit evenings out on the terrace.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no restaurant at The Six Weligama but that doesn’t mean you’re about to go hungry. A mere click of your fingers (rather, organised via your butler) will bring a whirlwind of chefs to your villa to whip up pan-Asian feasts from the signature menu or anything else you fancy eating (within reason, of course). Fish and seafood is caught locally and served so fresh that you probably encountered it on your morning dip. You can also opt for a theatrical beach barbecue around your own bonfire or go for an intimate, candlelit dinner of simple Sri Lankan rice and curry, with depths of spice that are anything but.

Hotel bar

Again, there’s no formal bar, but a lengthy list of wines, spirits, juices and mocktails, and dedicated cocktail mixologists on site, means you’re unlikely to stay thirsty for long.

Last orders

Your villa comes fully serviced, so you can take each meal when you like. Staff are typically around until 10pm, but can be on hand later if you wish.

Room service

It’s all room service here. You can order to your villa on a whim until 10pm, but anything after that time will need to be requested in advance. Your butler remains available around the clock.

Address
The Six Weligama
151 Galle Road
Weligama
81700
Sri Lanka

Hugging the shoreline along Sri Lanka’s sun-kissed south coast, The Six Weligama’s half-dozen luxury villas lie around an hour from the colonial city of Galle.

Planes

Colombo’s international airport is a little over two hours north of The Six. Staff can help arrange airport transfers with at least 24 hours’ notice.

Trains

Rail routes connect Golumadama Junction near the airport to Midigama Station, a kilometre from the resort. The track runs the length of the coastline, rewarding intrepid travellers with dramatic sea and jungle views galore. The whole journey takes around four hours and the resort can arrange transfers from Midigama.

Automobiles

If you covet the freedom your own set of wheels provides, you can rent from all the usual suspects at the airport, plus each villa at The Six Weligama comes with its own free, secure parking area with space for up to three cars. But your butler is on hand to arrange tours and transfers should you wish to put someone else in the driving seat.

Worth getting out of bed for

If you’re a sucker for the movie Point Break or the summery sounds of the Beach Boys, well, you’ve come to the right place: Sri Lanka’s southern coastline is surf central. Rent a board from the resort and carve your way to Weligama for beginner-friendly waves, Coconut Point for classic A-frames, or Ahangama for more challenging reef breaks.

Of course, you could also just stick to The Six Weligama’s more refined pursuits. Learn the gentle art of traditional mask crafting and painting, pimp up your dinner party repertoire at a hands-on Sri Lankan cooking demo or catch a starlit movie on the beach with the little ones.

December to May is turtle season, when you can see hatchlings tentatively slide and scuttle their way from their own luxury accommodations at The Six to a new life on the ocean wave. Tours to Galle’s 17th-century Dutch fort, palm-flanked lighthouse and atmospheric cobblestone streets can be booked via your personal butler.

Local restaurants

You might not feel like dining out when you can have whatever you desire prepared and served in your own luxury villa, but if you’re determined, there’s a handful of low-key establishments serving local fare nearby. Your butler will also be happy to make reservations for in-demand restaurants slightly further afield, such as beachfront Citra for zesty Sri Lankan flavours and palm-fringed sea views over in up-and-coming Ahangama, Galle’s The Tuna & The Crab, set in the old Dutch Hospital on the Galle Fort ramparts, or 39 Bistro + Wine Bar in the swish Fort Printers hotel.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from their luxury beach villa in Weligama and shaken the sand from their shoes and Ceylon tea from their suitcases, a full account of their indulgent boutique break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Six Weligama in southern Sri Lanka…

They don’t do things by halves at six-villa — the clue’s in the name — The Six Weligama, where a small army of alchemists ensures things run as smoothly as at a full-service hotel; probably even more so. Even the briefest hunger pang sees a lavish floating breakfast tray materialise in your pool or private chefs conjure up pan-Asian banquets, and your personal mixologist will seem to know you’re thirsty before you do.

Your palatial pad is no less polished. Each villa is inspired by beaches around the world, with tactile fabrics one-off pieces by Sri Lankan artists, a sauna and private pool. Call dibs on an upstairs bedroom for balcony bragging rights and superior views of the sea — especially when baby turtles dot the shoreline between December and May.

It’s hard to say what is the star of the show here: the five-star service, beach views, turtles or villas themselves. Spoiler: it’s all of the above.
