Our favourite rooms

There’s quite the abundance to choose from, and though all charm with their art deco decor and varying views, our hearts are firmly with the Oceanfront King Balcony Suites for their dual-aspect panoramas out to the Atlantic. If you’re in need of additional alfresco space, the Oceanview Pool Villa One Bedroom Suite comes with a duo of balconies and its own private garden.

Poolside

If you prefer a warming swim over an ocean dip , the hotel’s alfresco heated pool is open between 7am and 8pm. Its surrounding space is filled with shading palms, cabanas and loungers, as well as a poolside café that pours punchy cocktails and plates light bites as and when you please. And for the avid divers among us, its original diving board from the 1950s is still yours to fly from.

Spa

There’s no spa, but fitness fiends will find an equally soothing effect from the hotel’s state-of-the-art gym, tricked out with all the latest equipment and private studios for bespoke training sessions. The Shelborne also hosts a selection of exercise-oriented events, including weekly wellness classes, bootcamps on the beach and pop-up run clubs.

Food and Drink

Top Table

There's something particularly stylish about a cocktail in a cabana. And if you’re dining at the Shelborne, we’d secure a seat as close to that evening’s live entertainment as possible.

Dress Code

A low-effort get-up is all you need at this beachfront hotel, but for evenings at the Shelborne and Pauline, we’d suggest amping up the glam.

Hotel restaurant

Helmed by multi-award-winning chef Abram Bissell, the hotel’s trio of eateries has a deserved cult following. The laidback Café kicks days off with aromatic espressos and freshly baked pastries, sourced from SoBe’s collection of revered artisanal bakeries. Brunch, lunch and between-meal munchies are supplied by the Pool Café, where casual plates include conch fritters, club sandwiches and smash burgers. As evening rolls in, flagship restaurant The Shelborne comes into its own. Menus are a paean to Miami’s waterfront locale, whisking fresh fish from Biscayne Bay and seasonal produce into flavor-packed sharing plates such as red prawn ceviche, lobster rolls, and half a dozen oysters dosed in a champagne mignonette.

Another soon-to-open spot is set to add to the hotel’s already impressive line-up. Pauline — named for the wife of Charles Baker — will spotlight seafood dished with South American flavors and worthy wine pairings.

Hotel bar

Along with its famed name in charge of food, The Shelborne has managed to secure cocktail connoisseur Christopher Lowder to host the Bar, where talented barkeeps shake up all sorts of creative concoctions atop a 32-foot-long counter. We’ve also heard word that a dimly lit lounge by the name of Little Torch will be opening its doors soon, with seasonal spirits and an intimate atmosphere as its defining features.

Last orders

The Café is open 7am to 11am; the Pool Café serves 10am to 6pm, and the Shelborne dishes dinner from 5pm to 10pm. The Bar starts its pouring at noon and closes for the night at 10pm.

Room service

Breakfast can be taken in bed, but for all other meals, you’ll have to change out of your PJs.

Address
The Shelborne by Proper
1801 Collins Avenue
Miami Beach
33139
United States

The Shelborne by Proper sits along South Beach’s Atlantic-lapped shore, where Collins Avenue meets 18th Street in Miami.

Planes

Miami International Airport is your nearest landing strip, with taxi ranks available to hail for the 25-minute drive to the hotel.

Automobiles

You won’t need your wheels in this well-connected city, and if you do find yourself in need, you’re welcome to book the hotel’s Lotus Eletre car for free (an additional charge applies if you’re driving beyond a two-mile radius). For those bringing their own car, valets can find nearby street parking from $55 a night.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Shelborne puts you steps from South Beach's sands, where basking with a book is as respected a pastime as taking part in one of the hotel’s waterfront bootcamp classes. Yoga sessions are also held on the beach, if you’d rather a slower start, and sound baths can be set-up for the holistic healers. Bike rides to Key Biscayne, rambles through South Pointe Park and Miami Beach Botanical Gardens bring even more inner-city solace. You’ll also find a rotating schedule of talent-led events on at the hotel, including jazz nights, DJ sets, ceramics lessons and cocktail-making classes

For a taste of SoBe’s culture, galleries like the Museum of Graffiti, Rubell Museum, Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Bass Museum spotlight lesser-known names across their wealth of ever-changing exhibitions. And across the causeway, the Design District is a catwalk of haute-label stores, as well as some smaller boutiques.

Local restaurants

Seafood and steaks are the MO at Joe’s Stone Crab, which has been serving up its storied claws since 1913. This buttery delight is well worth a stop at some point, but if you’d rather something a little more elevated (that doesn’t require eating with your hands), LT Steak & Seafood at the Betsy brings Southern hospitality to surf and turf classics. Over in the city, Kyu takes an approach to Asian cuisine that’s as eye-catching as its well-dressed dining room, with wood-fired dishes prepared with finesse in an open kitchen.

Local bars

The creativity that defined the Eighties in New York has travelled south to Brother’s Keeper, where pan pizzas, light bites and all your classic cocktails keep you dancing into the early hours. For a taste of Miami’s famed dive bar scene, the historic Mac’s Club Deuce is where you’ll find locals knocking it back.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this historically significant hotel on South Beach and unpacked their Alo gear and Wynwood finds, a full account of their Floridian break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Shelborne by Proper in Miami…

The Shelborne by Proper may be on Miami’s influx of fresh openings for 2025, but its home along SoBe’s Collins Avenue has well-established roots in this city’s architectural history.

Designed in the 1940s by renowned duo Igor Polevitsky and Morris Lapidus, its art deco façade was a shoreside beacon of Florida’s post-war MiMo movement. And with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and The Beatles frequenting, its star-studded guest list quickly amplified its beachfront allure. After years of meticulous works from its new owners, that revered reputation continues to shine.

A palm-fringed pool may still sport the original Fifties diving board, but contemporary interiors have been sensitively made-over with mid-century-modern touches that nod to the hotel’s heritage. And a clutch of provenance-proud eateries brings the hotel’s appeal bang-up-to-date. Your backyard — SoBe’s sandy stretch — is a timeless advantage, especially when it comes with an insider team who can make exploring it as easy as singing came to Sinatra.
