Old England meets New

Storied seaside of Cape Cod

An intimate hideaway with equal doses of seashore cosiness and beachy modernity, the Platinum Pebble Boutique Inn on Cape Cod strikes the perfect balance between homey B&B and stylish boutique hotel. The building’s origins as an 1850s sea captain’s house are evident in the maps on the walls, and its prime West Harwich location makes it a perfect jumping-off point for exploring the Cape.

Our favourite rooms

We’re partial to the spacious Superior room, upstairs in the main house, which has its own patio overlooking the pool. For a more intimate experience, book one of the Luxury Superior rooms in the separate building set back from the main house.

Located at the heart of the inn, the unheated outdoor pool is open from 10am to 6pm, May through October. Loungers, tables and chairs dot the pool deck, where breakfast can be served during the warmer months.

Packing tips

Leave your beach gear at home – the inn has towels, beach chairs and umbrellas you can borrow, so all you need is your swimsuit.

There’s a private path leading from the inn to a neighbouring yoga and Pilates studio, where guests can take classes. The inn offers free parking permits for a local beach.

More of an adults-only retreat, but over-16s are welcome. Guests must be 21 or over to check-in.

Not only is breakfast made with locally sourced ingredients and the hotel powered with renewable energy sources, but the also inn participates in the Clean the World initiative, which donates unused bath products to health care programmes in developing countries. Many of the products throughout the hotel are eco-friendly, and the inn is a member of the Cape & Islands Green programme.

Boston’s Logan International Airport is the closest major airport, 83 miles away. Providence’s international airport is only slightly further, at 92 miles away. Boston has direct flights to most major international hubs, and Providence offers connecting flights from most US and Canadian cities, both from airlines such as Jet Blue (, Southwest (, Delta Airlines ( and US Airways ( Cape Air ( also offers a couple of flights a day between Boston and Hyannis’ Barnstable airport, about 20 miles from the inn.

The nearest major stations are in Boston and Providence, both serviced by Amtrak from East Coast hubs including New York, Washington and Philadelphia. Boston’s is a 90-mile drive from the inn; Providence’s is an 86-mile trip.

All major car-hire companies operate out of both Boston and Providence’s airports – you’ll want a car both to drive to the inn and to explore the Cape. Free parking is provided for one car per room.

Worth getting out of bed for

The area around the Platinum Pebble and Harwich – and, indeed, the Cape in general – is full of outdoor activities perfect for a summer getaway. Go hiking and biking along the scenic Cape Cod Rail Trail, which runs right by the inn, and spend the day on the beach at nearby Belmont Road Beach, Earl Beach or West Dennis Beach. Catch a slice of true Americana with a Harwich Mariners minor league baseball game and visit the iconic lighthouses in Nauset, Chatham and Highland. Get out on the ocean with a sailboat charter through Cape Sail, a whale-watching trip with The Dolphin Fleet or a heart-pounding kitesurfing expedition with Air Support.

In cooler months, New Englanders flock to the area for antiquing; favourite fossicking spots include Back in Tyme, just down the road from the Platinum Pebble, and the Harwich Antique Center. Peruse the many art galleries in Wellfleet and Provincetown and get to know one of America’s most storied families at the JFK Museum in Hyannis, home also to the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame. Immerse yourself in the history of one of America’s earliest settlements at the Cape Cod Maritime Museum.

If you’re feeling especially adventurous, take the ultimate day trip with a ferry ride to either Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard – both about an hour-long trip. The inn is also just a five-minute drive from the high-speed ferry to Nantucket that runs from May through September.

Local restaurants

As a long-time summer destination for urbanites, Cape Cod is a heaven for both unfussy seafood lovers and fine dining connoisseurs. Just four miles from Platinum Pebble, L’Alouette Bistro (+1 508 430 0405) uses only local ingredients to serve up authentic French fare such as moules-frites and bouillabaisse, alongside a superlative wine list. Get fresh Quivet Neck oysters from neighbouring Dennis at The Oyster Company (+1 508 398 4600), a laid-back raw bar and grill popular with locals, just half a mile from the inn. For some of the best views around, head to The Ocean House (+1 508 394 0700), a mile from the Platinum Pebble, with a menu of fusion dishes such as spice-crusted yellowfin tuna with tempura rice and roasted sea scallops with tomato bacon jam.

For the best bread on the Cape, make your way to Pain D’Avignon (+1 508 778 8588), a relaxed café and boulangerie in Hyannis. In Brewster, one of the Cape’s best restaurants, Chillingsworth (+1 508 896 3640) serves classic fine dining cuisine in a 300-year-old house.

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this intimate inn on Cape Cod and unpacked their sandals and seashells, a full account of their luxury beach break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside the Platinum Pebble Boutique Inn on Cape Cod…

In a place as full of classic American summers as Cape Cod – this is where the Kennedys and their set turned ‘summer’ into a verb, after all – the key is to be one of the ones who knows to come year-round, who knows where to get just-shucked Wellfleet oysters… And who knows all the secret places to stay, like this clapboard former captain’s house that dates back to the 1850s.

Owned by a Texan couple, the Platinum Pebble feels more like the weekend home you always wanted than a typical New England inn. Elegant rooms have black leather sofas in front of crackling fireplaces and private patios looking out on the garden. Breakfasts of hot waffles or fruit and yoghurt arrive in your room each morning, you lounge around for hours by the pool while the crowds fight for spots on the beach and crystal decanters of port, whisky and brandy in the elegant living room make for the perfect nightcap. And, like any good friends, Stefanie and Mike have all the local tips to make sure you fit right in.

We loved

Stephanie and Hogan could not do enough for us, and could not have made us feel more welcome. The personalised touches such as dietary requirements being taken into consideration with breakfast made our stay feel really special. They offered breakfast in the room or by the pool depending on how social you felt, and were happy to provide recommendations for where to go during the days and for meals in the evening, even printing maps! The whole hotel was immaculate, and they have thought of every detail to make the stay really special.

Don’t expect

The area itself is not picturesque or luxurious, but it is well placed to access other areas of Cape Cod and there are restaurants within walking distance.

We loved

The hosts, Mike & Steph were fantastic, they took a lot of time everyday of our stay to give us tips on where to go, what to do to make the most of our trip.

Don’t expect

It to be like a hotel, its more like an excellent B&B.

We loved

Our hosts, their tips, the décor of the inn and the breakfasts! Go to Moonsuckers for dinner, Sunset at Rock Harbor followed by Dinner at Rock Harbor Grill, Chatham Main St for boutiques and galleries, Coast Guard Beach for waves and Earl Road Beach to get away!

Don’t expect

Noise, the inn is very peaceful and quaint.

We loved

The new owners Steph and Mike are doing a fantastic job. beautiful inn in a good central cape location. Our room (luxury superior) was huge, super comfy bed, big bath. Breakfasts on the terrace were lovely and not the usual huge American portions. Mike's advice for plans for each day was spot on! Ten out of 10!

Don’t expect

Would be great if there was the option of a mini bar or ability to have a drink in the early evening - currently you need to stop at a liquor store and by your own. Not a huge number of restaurants within walking distance if you want to both drink - enough for a couple of nights though,
