Setting

Peering at Picton Bay

There's enough pink to make everyone wink at The June Motel Prince Edward County, a retro-revering stay set back from the shores of Lake Ontario. Its off-beat bedrooms pair tropical wallpaper with rattan furnishings and bay views; and at the lobby bar, checkered floors and disco ball-like lamps backdrop breakfasts and fine wines from this terroir’s abundant vineyards. Weekly yoga and beach-bound cycles balance out any overindulgence, which is welcomed with nightly fireside s’mores.

No need to pack your time-travel machine: The June Motel’s penchant for all things retro and vintage will take you back to the halcyon days of the Seventies. A thirst for rosé is your suitably modern packing essential.

Hotel restaurant

There’s no formal restaurant, but a Continental spread of local goods, such as pastries, fresh fruit, yoghurt and coffee, is laid out along the lobby bar each morning. There are grab-and-go snacks and drinks available from a communal fridge; you can order light bites like cheese and charcuterie boards throughout the day, and nightly s’mores bring a sociable spirit to evenings around the fire pit.

Hotel bar

In case you’ve missed the running rosé theme — though, the neon artwork, slogan mugs and namesake suite are quite obvious giveaways — you’ll find plenty to sip on at the all-day lobby bar. Here, local is the MO, and bottles celebrate nearby distilleries, breweries and wineries, whose creations accompany sofa-set debriefs, convivial chatter around the campfire or bay-facing apéritifs in the fairy light-glowing forest.

Last orders

The lobby bar is open daily from 8am to 10pm (11pm in summer) with breakfast available between 8am and 10am.

Worth getting out of bed for

The lobby bar at The June Motel Prince Edward County is a fine introduction to the region, but deepen your knowledge of local vintages and ales with My County Wine Tours, who create bespoke itineraries to nearby wineries, breweries and distilleries. There are a few free bikes to borrow, a leisurely way to reach Picton or Bloomfield and their selection of independent boutiques. Sandbanks Provincial Park is a popular spot for beach days, so you’ll have to reserve a parking space in advance. North Beach and Little Bluff Conservation Area are quieter alternatives (but you’ll still need to call ahead for your spot).

Seasonally, you can watch blast-from-the-past films alfresco at Mustang Drive-In and take deep breaths of herb-infused air at Prince Edward Country Lavender. In winter, a skating rink opens at Parsons Brewery and summer’s hiking and biking tracks, such as Millenium Trail, turn into snowshoeing territory.

Local restaurants

For scenic lunches at Lake on the Mountain, head to view-blessed The Miller House for comforting, café-style dishes and sharing boards on its terrace; next-door The Inn stays open for dinner, too, and transforms locally sourced ingredients into global favorites. A compact menu of modern European plates is as moreish as the mid-century interiors at Theia, an intimate restaurant with a lovely wine list.

Local cafés

Not only does Beacon Bike + Brew excel at alliteration, but it also expertly crafts bagels, coffees and breakfast treats.

Local bars

See things in sepia at old-world cocktail bar The Russ & Co, where amber-hued lighting complements golden, bourbon-laced tipples. When in Canadian Wine Country sip house vintages in the lush garden of Closson Chase Vineyards

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this wine-loving hotel in Canada and unpacked their bottles of rosé and all-things-pink merch, a full account of their bay-facing break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The June Motel Prince Edward County…

Being owned and renovated by best friends turned business partners, Sarah and April, brings a distinct feminine touch to The June Motel Prince Edward County. Sure, in the obvious, traditional sense — pretty pinks seem to be the overarching color scheme across retro-style rooms and neon-lit corners — but also in the thoughtful touches of a forest-framed picnic area, weekly yoga class and free-to-borrow bikes.

In the lobby bar, as well as slips-straight-down bottles of rosé, you’ll find a pantry and mini boutique stocked with regional treats and finds from women-owned brands. Copies of the motel’s June Journal are scattered about, or you could get the local lowdown from convivial evenings around the fire pit, which are made all the sweeter by help-yourself s’mores.  Savvy staff can also point you in the direction of Lake Ontario’s quieter beaches and Picton’s crafty boutiques. This refined motel stay will leave you in the pink.
