Our favourite rooms

Bucolic views are bountiful across all rooms, so making your selection really depends on whether you’d rather gaze at Mount Timpanogos, North Fork Ridge or the canyons themselves. We’re partial to those with private decks for their in-the-shot additions; or opt for the Cascade, Timp or Ridgeline Suite for your own wood-burning fireplace and extra space to settle into.

Poolside

Hiding between pines and watching over Mount Timpanogos, the heated relaxation pool welcomes languid daily dips from 7am. You’ll find two flanking hot tubs and a wood-barreled sauna, too, as well as a cold-plunge shower for the brave.

Spa

The Spa at Sundance takes its calming cues from the sacred concept of ‘hokóka’ — an ethos coined by the indigenous Sioux people that sees health as the restoration of spiritual and emotional needs, as much as physical. Complimentary yoga, meditation and sound bath sessions recenter your sense of self, and there are five treatment rooms for chakra-aligning massages, body scrubs and facials. Should your focus fall more to the physical, there’s a Pilates studio and decked-out gym with all the latest equipment.

Packing tips

Remember your Canon and all its additions — these cinematic surroundings deserve their wide shot.

Also

Sundance Mountain Resort is frequently used as a retreat for screenwriters and creatives, so don’t be surprised if you see some early-stage scripts floating about the place.

Pet‐friendly

Up to two dogs can stay in ground-floor rooms at The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort for a one-off charge of $100 each. See more pet-friendly hotels in Sundance.

Children

All ages are welcome; there isn’t a kids’ club, but babysitting can be arranged with 24 hours’ notice and there’s a host of family-friendly activities available, including art classes and horseback riding.

Sustainability efforts

Best known for his contributions to the entertainment industry, Robert Redford was an environmentalist at heart, and his love for this land is etched into every inch of The Inn’s ethos. The building itself was intentionally designed to sit below the tree line and blend peacefully with surrounding ecosystems. Inside, LED lighting and efficient climate control limit energy use, and 90 per cent of the power used is offset through Rocky Mountain Power Blue Sky Credits (and the remaining 10 per cent through the Subscriber Solar program). Single-use plastic is banned; low-flow fixtures reduce water waste, and recycled glass is repurposed by local artisans to craft bespoke sculptures and homeware. You’ll be charged a small environmental impact fee, which helps to fund the Sundance Nature Alliance’s conservation efforts, and you’re encouraged to join in on a host of community-led projects that’ll teach you more about Sundance’s land. The hotel is also part of the NSAA’s Sustainable Slopes initiative, and they work closely with the Wild Utah Project to support wildlife research.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Frost-nipped noses will be warmed with a fireside seat at Foundry Grill; at the Tree Room, secure yourself a table nearest to the trunk.

Dress Code

Come casual for all but the Tree Room, where earthy tones and elegant silhouettes make evenings a memorable affair.

Hotel restaurant

There’s a roster of dining spots across the resort, but your main sit-and-stay options will be Foundry Grill and the Tree Room. The first is your laidback base for all-day dining, with hearty breakfasts, weekend brunch and evening options that put a seasonal spin on comforting alpine classics in a roaring fireside setting. The Tree Room is the more formal of the two, dating back to Redford’s founding days and centered around one of the reserve’s native arboreal residents. As with Foundry Grill, dinner menus here focus on locally sourced produce, but options are a little more refined in nature: pomegranate and citrus salads, Thai-curried salmon, truffle-topped tagliatelle and pepper steaks, say.

Elsewhere, Bearclaw Cabin serves nachos and burritos for lunchtime refuels on the mountain; The Lookout opens seasonally and dishes its diner-style staples (burgers and shakes) with panoramic views. The Deli makes picking up a slice of pizza all the easier, and Mountain Camp Café is your go-to for paninis, wraps and protein-packed bowls.

Hotel bar

Most of the resort’s restaurants have bars, and the Tree Room touts a particularly impressive selection of wine pairings. But if it’s a devout-to-drinks spot you’re after, the Owl Bar is where you’ll find your spirited crowd. Loved by locals as much as visitors, this is a saloon-style bar that wears the Western motif well — helped perhaps by claims Butch Cassidy once topped its list of patrons. You’ll find a selection of classic cocktails; pints being poured at the warped-with-age counter and light bites that hit that comfort-food spot. There are often live bands playing, too, so be sure to check lists of weekly happenings.

Last orders

Breakfast at Foundry Grill is from 7.30am (9am for brunch), lunch is 11.30am and dinner is 5pm; the Tree Room dishes 5pm–10pm. The hours for Bearclaw are 11am–3pm; 7am–9pm at The Deli and 8am–6pm (5pm on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday) at Mountain Camp.

Room service

Available from a dedicated menu between 7.30am and 11pm.

Beneath a cirque in Provo Canyon, The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort sits in its namesake resort against a sweeping backdrop of Mount Timpanogos in north-central Utah.

Planes

International flights touch down in Salt Lake City, which is around an hour’s drive from the hotel. Some domestic routes may take you straight to Provo Airport, a closer 30-minute drive. Private transfers can be arranged from both for an additional charge.

Automobiles

You’ll have access to the hotel’s Land Rover driver service, which will whisk you anywhere within the resort for free. But if you’re looking to venture beyond its borders, a car will be essential; there’s private parking (with electric-vehicle charging spots) on-site for $30 a day.

Worth getting out of bed for

The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort’s talented concierge team tailor itineraries to you — and the season. Out-of-towners typically bypass Mount Timpanogos for neighboring Deer Valley as snow begins to dust slopes. But stick to this cirque, and you’ll find yourself skiing with pro-level locals, most of whom have been carving down these runs since they could stand. Proximity to Outlaw and Jake’s lifts makes summiting simple, and if you’re yet to match expert moves, the PSIA-accredited snowsports school can help finesse your technique in no time. Night and Nordic skiing are scenic alternatives, and there are 10 kilometers of dedicated-to-snowshoeing paths to explore.

Warmer months bring fly fishing, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and scenic lift rides. And adrenaline junkies will find their fix with a 2,100-foot-high zipline over the canyon. Indoor pastimes come courtesy of the on-site Art Studio and Gallery, where in-house experts host jewelry, journal, soap and perfume making sessions; painting and printmaking; photography lessons, and pottery. You’re welcome to watch experts work in the Glassblowing Studio, or leave them to it and seek specialists of a different sort at the spa.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this artistic abode in Provo Canyon and jotted down their next big idea, a full account of their community-focused foray will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort in Utah County…

Screen-legend Robert Redford had many a vision, with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid being the most obvious association here. Though perhaps his greatest creation wasn’t a tale of two outlaws, but instead a sustainably minded stay at the base of Utah’s Mount Timpanogos.

Offset from its namesake hotel, The Inn at Sundance Mountain Resort combines the convivial comfort of a boutique lodge with the all-frills extras of a larger hotel. As with Redford's movies, community, connection and creativity are consistent themes: local artisans host crafts in the on-site studio, and their works adorn down-home interiors. Provo’s pro-level skiers teach newer arrivals the slopes, and family-run farms supply the restaurants’ produce. Even the spa plays its part, drawing healing inspiration from the land’s native tribe.

You're encouraged to make the most of your bucolic setting with personalised itineraries and direct access to the Outlaw Express Lift. But here, appreciation for the land runs deeper still, with charity partnerships and conservation efforts woven into the Inn’s way of life.
