Food and Drink

Top Table

On sunny evenings, make the most of the atmospheric courtyard terrace. Otherwise, snag a banquette with a view of the open kitchen.

Dress Code

Aim to balance polish and playfulness — cashmere and cuffed denim, or chinos and a chore coat.

Hotel restaurant

All-day modern brasserie Rivié takes its name from the courtier who once called the building home. On the seasonal menu, expect a fresh take on classic French flavours, such as caramelised onion raviole, citrus-laced salads and butcher’s cut steak with pommes dauphine. Similarly, breakfast might be French toast, a Parisian spread of Comté, ham, baguette and a croissant, or eggs Benedict with a yuzu hollandaise.

Hotel bar

Jacques’ impresses from the outset — the intimate cocktail bar is reached via the hotel’s original wrought-iron spiral staircase. Slink upstairs, and it’s like entering the inner circle of a Twenties salonnière, with art-deco club chairs and ornate wallpaper. The tipples are suitably bold and sophisticated, ranging from a St-Germain spritz with thyme and peach to the André, which combines whiskey, Rouelle du Tarn cheese and fig syrup.

Contrastingly, wine bar Planche is the blueprint for a dream Parisian afternoon. Its wooden shelves are stocked with organic and biodynamic bottles, the charcuterie and French cheeses are plentiful, tealights flicker on bistro tables for two, and there’s a leafy terrace should the sun show its face.

Last orders

Breakfast is served at Rivié from 7am–10.30am, lunch from noon–3pm, and dinner from 6pm–10.30pm; weekend brunch is noon–4pm. Planche pours 5.30pm–midnight, Tuesday–Saturday. Jacques' is open 6pm–1am, Tuesday and Wednesday; till 2am, Thursday–Saturday.

Room service

You can order up to your room from 7am to 10.30pm.

Worth getting out of bed for

The 2nd draws food-lovers and photographers for the Marché Montorgueil, with its flower shops, fromageries, brasseries and bakeries beckoning from under striped awnings. Even closer to The Hoxton, Paris is historic covered passageway Passage des Panoramas, a time capsule of vintage shopfronts filled with collectibles. Le Grand Rex, Paris’s vast, art-deco cinema, is just around the corner from the hotel — catch a matinee or join a behind-the-scenes tour. Leaving Le Deuxième behind, many of the Rive Droite’s must-see spots are within walking distance, including the Louvre, Jardin des Tuileries and Le Marais.

Local restaurants

Brasserie Rosie Lou pairs an inviting Basque-leaning menu with vintage-accented interiors inspired by the Southwest coast — plus, it’s just down the road from the hotel, putting their beloved truffle macaroni within strolling distance. Jòia is star chef Hélène Darroze’s laidback restaurant, where you can expect simple, beautifully crafted dishes with a local focus. For fine dining, try Fleur de Pavé, where chef Sylvain Sendra’s tasting menus combine French flavours with Japanese and Peruvian influences picked up on his travels.

Local cafés

Live out the Parisian lunchtime fantasy — a jamon beurre and midday glass of cab sav — at locally loved Le Café Noir. At Milanese coffee spot Paolina Caffe, pop in for an espresso and be immediately seduced by a maritozzo cream bun.

Local bars

La Boissonière is exactly the sort of neighbourhood spot you want a short walk from your hotel — welcoming, warmly lit, and with an abundance of tapas, cocktails and well-chosen wines. It’s worth figuring out how to reach speakeasy-style Danico (spoiler: it’s through Daroco restaurant). In a glam, art-deco setting, top-of-their-game bartenders craft intricate cocktails; menus change often, but recent creations include a roquefort martini and a praline-y Paris-Brest riffing on the pastry of the same name (with extra rum).

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this storied hotel in the 2nd arrondissement and unpacked their brocante finds and floral arrangements, a full account of their central city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Hoxton, Paris…

The Hoxton, Paris has a varied past — before its boutique hotel transformation, the 18th-century building spent time as the hôtel particulier of a counsellor to Louis XIV then a textile factory. There are hints of this history throughout with industrial touches mixed into elegantly corniced interiors. And though there’s no longer any regal stuffiness, the wrought-iron staircase spiralling up through the sunlit Haussmannian lobby harks back to days of courtly grandeur.

Make like Louis and keep your most trusted adviser close, for difficult choices lie ahead. Will you hit up The Hoxton’s modern French restaurant, or explore the 2nd arrondissement’s candlelit brasseries? Out on the wine bar’s sun-dappled terrace — white, red or orange? And when you’ve answered ‘all of the above’ and find yourself curled up in an armchair upstairs at cocktail bar Jacques’, the most fiendish question of all: an early morning cycle, basket stuffed with flowers and fresh bread, or a second martini now...
