Setting

Edgy Eastern Docklands

Docked on the city’s eastern waterfront, The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam is a modern stay with maritime heritage. Its grand, Twenties building was once the headquarters of a shipping company, with original tilework and lofty ceilings adorning its now convivial co-working space and French brasserie, plus anything-goes bedrooms (turret perch or five-person bed, anyone?). It's plain sailing into the city centre by bike, tram or foot, putting The Hoxton at the helm of another shipshape stay.

Our favourite rooms

True to its brand, The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam pairs restored, heritage features with contemporary design — the hotel’s grand façade is the prelude to original tile-adorned walls and floors inside. Admire panoramic city views from the Tower Room’s lofty perch; serenade your date on the grand piano in Tune, or cosy up under historic, vaulted ceilings in the Studio. With its five-person bed and beanbags, Gather is built for slumber parties (though you might have something other than sleeping in mind). And if it’s no more than a classic crashpad you’re after, Roomy is ideal.

Packing tips

A fondness for saying ‘I went there first’ — this hotel is in the Eastern Docklands, an ahead-of-the-curve locale that sets it (and you) apart from the classic central stays.

Children of all ages are welcome. The Biggy Bunk or Double Up rooms are best for families; the Studio and Tune each have a double sofa-bed, too, and the restaurant has a kids’ menu.

Food and Drink

Top Table

There’s no short straw, but we like seats at the mural-facing bar if you’re dining as two, or on the terrace if the sun’s shining.

Dress Code

Cool but comfortable — if you’re dining at Breman Brasserie, you’re likely about to set off around the city, or returning from your roaming.

Hotel restaurant

Breman Brasserie is named after the historical building’s first architect, and there are nods to its heritage throughout, such as lofty ceilings, restored tilework and art deco-inspired furnishings. The Mediterranean menus put a polished spin on comfort food — trout with beurre blanc and pickled fennel, a house burger with Gruyère, or caramelised cauliflower steak. The buffet spread at breakfast is just as indulgent with generous sweet and savoury offerings.

Hotel bar

You’ll find two bars inside Breman Brasserie. You can’t miss the first — the marble counter is backdropped by floor-to-ceiling, bottle-laden shelves and makes for a grand way to kick your evening off. If you’re looking for something more intimate, the second is by the kitchen and faces a Matisse-like mural and selection of wines. There’s also a sprawling outdoor terrace, which opens seasonally, if you prefer to aperitivo alfresco.

Last orders

The brasserie serves breakfast from 7am to 11am, lunch between noon and 6pm, and dinner from 6pm to 9pm. The bar pours until 11pm; the terrace opens from 7am to 11pm, April to September.

Room service

You can order dishes to your door between 7.30am and 9pm.

Trains

Centraal Station is less than a 10-minute drive and has Eurostar services to London and Paris. Rietlandpark is just outside the hotel and your closest station for local tram routes.

In a city of cyclists, the only wheels you’ll want is a pair — plus the centre is only a 10-minute ride away. Should you opt for four, there’s a charged public carpark on the same road as The Hoxton.

Worth getting out of bed for

Make the most of your docklands setting at The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam and play out your live-like-a-local fantasies. Your hosts put on a monthly run club, an active way to familiarise yourself with the neighbourhood, or if you’d rather be sociable when you’re not working up a sweat, its brasserie hosts DJ sets every weekend. Swing by Div. Amsterdam to pick up cult-favourite brands; roam around leafy, sculpture-dotted Oosterpark, or pop into waterfront Bisou Gallery for a colour fix. From there, you can hop on the free ferry across the river to explore Hamerkwartier’s shops and dining spots. From the hotel, stroll along waterfront Veemkade or grab a bike and make for the city’s central hitters.

Local restaurants

Barlotta Amsterdam looks to Iberian and Italian flavours and design — cod croquettes, catch of the day on the weekend and tomato-caviar-topped burrata are backdropped by book- and bottled-lined walls. Louie Louie brings the buzz from brunch to after-dinner drinks, with its industrial-chic interiors and convivial terrace, and the setting for signature cocktails alongside Japanese bites. Despite its name, Badhuis Amsterdam delivers very good tipples, table-pleasing Asian plates and a sociable calendar of events and pop-ups.

Local cafés

Follow your nose to river-facing Barmhartig Koffie for expertly roasted beans that are crafted into strong-but-smooth brews, or to Stadsbakkerij As, where the smell of freshly baked bread rouses appetites for buttery pastries and French-style sandwiches.

Local bars

An old Dutch mill is the setting for industrial-style brewery Brouwerij ‘t IJ, a popular spot for organic pale and dark beers sipped alfresco streetside or in the twinkly garden. At Buurtcafé de Tros, mid-century-inspired interiors flaunt glass bricks, candlelit tables and curved wooden chairs — date-night apéritifs of spritzes or chilled glasses of wine at the bar quickly turn to spontaneous dinners.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this heritage hotel in the Netherlands and unpacked their Hox Shop souvenirs and snacks, a full account of their east-of-the-city break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam…

Although its brick façade bears the original ‘Lloyd Hotel’ sign, this Twenties building was first the headquarters of a major Dutch shipping company. It was then briefly a prison (we’ll keep that confined to history) before a hotel, more recently transformed into The Hoxton, Lloyd Amsterdam

Historic features were carefully preserved during renovations, so you’ll find retro tiles decorating the hallway and walls, traditional Dutch wooden ceilings in the Studios, and plenty of neck-craning ceilings.

What’s now a bright co-working space — true to Hoxton’s come-one-come-all attitude — was formerly the shipping company’s waiting room, bringing past and present closer together. Similarly, Mediterranean-style Breman Brasserie is named after the building’s original architect; it delights from buffet breakfasts to leisurely lunches and after-dinner cocktails.

You can also pay homage to your host’s heritage with waterfront strolls, river-gazing sundowners and free ferry rides — all part of the appeal of this alternative Eastern Docklands locale.
