Food and Drink

Top Table

By the fireplace beckons in cooler months; under a fringed parasol in the garden on sunnier days.

Dress Code

Your rowing unisuit is too casual, and your regatta blazer, a bit formal — hit the sweet spot with something in the middle.

Hotel restaurant

The menus at The George & Dragon may change seasonally, but classic British recipes with a French twist are their constant. The restaurant is cosy and convivial, with leather banquettes, vintage prints and a light-soaked conservatory, where each corner is primed for lingering meals of twice-baked cheddar soufflé and steak frites.

If you’re still stuffed from last night’s dinner, you can opt for something lighter at breakfast, or start as you mean to go on with a hearty full English or bacon-topped buttermilk pancakes. Sunday lunches are as generous as they are delicious: each roast comes with bottomless potatoes, gravy and Yorkshire puddings (belt loosening, incoming...).

Hotel bar

Like its food menus, the drinks at the hotel’s pub change throughout the year to reflect the region’s seasonal produce. As per the rowing tradition, you’ll find tankards of fruity Pimm’s and lemonade in summer; you could also sip a lychee margarita or hazelnut espresso martini. And purists can choose from a selection of lagers, ciders and wines, to sip by the fireplace or in the garden.

Last orders

Breakfast is from 7am to 10.30am (7.30am to 10.30am at weekends), and an all-day menu is served from noon until 9.45pm (9pm on Sundays). The pub pours from 10am to 11pm (11am to 9.45pm on Sundays).

Worth getting out of bed for

You can rest on your oars — literally and figuratively — at The George & Dragon, which sits in the historical heart of rowing-hub Marlow. In summer, swing by its annual Marlow Town Regatta and Festival before heading upstream to nearby Henley-on-Thames for its Royal Regatta. But Marlow’s charm is cross-seasonal, with its riverside Higginson Park, scenic Thames Path strolls and independent boutiques and cafés. Close by, you’ll find the Chiltern Hills, which are ideal for rural romps, or seek out scholarly pursuits in Oxford, less than an hour’s drive away.

Local restaurants

Tom Kerridge adds a few Michelin stars to his culinary crown in Marlow: two shine at epicurean’s favourite The Hand & Flowers, a local institution thanks to its fine, British menus and polished pub interiors. And his one-star The Coach is not your average inn, with its delicately presented dishes and equal attention to meat-free plates. At Sindhu by Atul Kochhar, stained glass windows overlook the river, but its vibrant tasting courses of Southern Indian flavours paired with regional produce are equally captivating of your attention.

Local cafés

On your way down to the Thames Path, pick up caffeine fixes and baked goods from The Little Green Boat Café to fuel your ramble. For slower-paced mornings, settle in at Satollo for chocolate-covered cappuccini, stuffed focaccia sandwiches and other Italian-inspired bites.

Local bars

The Oarsman is a bistro and wine bar with an extensive list of round-the-world vintages, which savvy staff help pair with seasonal dishes.

As soon as our reviewers have returned from this restaurant with rooms in Marlow and unpacked their regatta blazers and boater hats, a full account of their riverside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The George & Dragon in Buckinghamshire…

The George & Dragon is as storied as the fable it’s named after. The Grade II-listed pub was built in the late 18th-century, and its original features, such as ceiling mouldings and red brickwork, nod to its stalwart status in market town Marlow.

The tale spun here, however, is a calming contrast to its eponym, though there are some parallels. You’ll get the royal treatment in its colourful and comfortable bedrooms, and instead of a fire-breathing dragon, you’ll be warmed by the pub's roaring fireplace. The only sacrifice you might have to make is dessert, should you be too full from the indulgence of its preceding, seasonal courses.

Days at large in Marlow tend to be laidback, but you can seek out some action along the River Thames, particularly in summer with its Pimm’s-pouring regattas and waterside walking trails.

This age-old folklore has many iterations, but in Marlow, this boutique base is the only legend.
