Vaunted villa retreat

Setting

Near the Main drag

On the southern banks of the River Main, a new leafy retreat is blossoming: The Florentin by Althoff Collection. It’s inspired by the bright, central courtyards of grand Italian residences, but this opening-soon stay will also bring Frankfurt heritage to the fore in its carefully curated suites, restored Villa Speyer and peaceful — but well-connected — locale. Two restaurants, a spa and pool are taking root, too, and we’re looking forward to autumn when this retreat comes fully into bloom.

Please note Don’t let our enticing gallery deceive you, these images for The Florentin are in fact computer generated. Apologies, real-life photographs will be with us soon…

Our favourite rooms

The Florentin’s thoughtful and extensive renovation of its historic home was helmed by top design studios Unscripted and Atelier Zürich, who have impressive pedigree in the hospitality worlds. Scout out your next breakfast or apéritif spot from a Deluxe Garden Room, which overlook the heart of the hotel: the central courtyard. The signature suites, set in the heritage-rich Villa Speyer, fuse old-world charm with modern flourishes, and each is individually styled with culture-nodding details.

A heated indoor pool will grace the spa.

Spa

Bespoke therapies, a garden-facing relaxation room and three saunas will be your urban antidotes at the coming-soon spa.

Worth getting out of bed for

Frankfurt's playful nickname of ‘Mainhattan’ nods to its Big Apple-esque skyline, which you can admire from Main Tower’s viewing platforms, or the cathedral tower offers a different vantage point of the city. You’re within easy reach of the moniker-bestowing river at The Florentin, and the embankment is generously lined with world-class museums — the Städel is a stand-out. Cross the water to the north, and you can tour frozen-in-time Goethe House before taking in emerging art galleries in up-and-coming Bahnofsviertel. The Old Town is a scenic stomping ground, where the bustling  Kleinmarkthalle and age-old taverns serve up mixed architectural styles, traditional treats and apfelwein.

Local restaurants

Dorade am Main takes its set-back-from-the-river locale as inspiration for its simple-but-delicious fish and seafood dishes, which are best enjoyed alfresco or in the light dining room. Spend the night in Greece — without the need for a flight — at Parthenon, a long-standing tavern with authentic recipes, hyper-fresh ingredients and a curated wine list. Pitstops from museum mooching turn into lingering lunches of refined takes on Austrian comfort foods, such as schnitzel and goulash, at Restaurant Lohninger, a fine Frankfurt institution.

Local cafés

Ca Phe, Oi is a Vietnamese-inspired café with plant-based brunches, speciality brews and cosy interiors. Take cakes and cuppas to go from Moka Roasters en route to your riverside strolls.

Local bars

Gin-laced creations, dimly lit corners and a vintage feel mark intimate evenings at cocktail joint Rote Bar. At Frankfurter Botschaft, polished German plates are eclipsed by terrace-set tipples and nightcaps at its riverfront beach-style bar.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this heritage hotel in Germany and unpacked their apfelwein and museum postcards, a full account of their restorative break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside The Florentin by Althoff Collection in Frankfurt…

Opening-soon The Florentin by Althoff Collection, in Frankfurt’s riverside Sachsenhausen ’hood, already has a long list of hospitality credentials. Allow us to namedrop for a minute: the Althoff group — who are behind Smith-approved Ameron Zürich Bellerive au Lac and Villa Belrose — have respectfully renovated this former Rocco Forte residence and history-steeped sanctuary with expertise from leading design studios Unscripted (which is loved by Aman) and Atelier Zürich.

Putting its impressive European reach aside, the hotel’s clout is evident locally, too — especially given its closeness to the river, where you’ll find a generous stretch of top museums. Make this your cultural jumping off point for the rest of the city’s storied corners, literary-rich traditions and soul-warming cooking.

Frankfurt may be a finance hub, but things are considerably gentler in pace here, especially at The Florentin, where a verdant courtyard, alfresco dining and soothing, pool-toting spa are set to be your urban tonic.
