Hotel restaurant

Importing the flavours of New Orleans all the way from Louisiana to the California-Nevada border, Toulouse goes further than just po’ boys (though they’re a great place to start). Local ingredients are used for hearty favourites such as sausage and crawfish poutine, shrimp and grits, seafood gumbo and Cajun chicken wings. Breakfast options are just as filling: Big Easy French toast with pecan butter and whipped cream, Belgian waffles and berry pancakes.

Hotel bar

Drinks are served in Toulouse or can be served to your sunlounger – signature Station House cocktails include a lavender Old Fashioned, the Original Toulouse Sazerac with absinthe, and a mojito with blueberry and bourbon. Frozen margaritas are on hand to cool you down in summer and the Rum Runners have a reputation for a reason.

Last orders

Toulouse is open from 8am until 9pm every day. At weekends, brunch is served from 11am until 3pm.

The inn is on the southern shores of Lake Tahoe, near the Heavenly Mountain ski resort and just over an hour’s drive from Nevada’s second casino city, Reno.

Planes

It’s an hour by car south from Reno-Tahoe airport. International stopover options include San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Dallas.

Automobiles

The great American road trip is calling and the backdrop doesn’t get more spectacular than this. There’s free on-site parking for your (preferably convertible) wagon.

Worth getting out of bed for

The beach on the southern banks of Lake Tahoe is only two blocks away (staff encourage walking there with no shoes); and it’s four blocks to Heavenly Mountain’s gondola for access to the piste. The Sierra Nevada mountains form the setting for 97 runs and 30 lifts, some of which are over the border in Nevada. The ski season usually runs from Thanksgiving to March. Drive west along the lake to reach Emerald Bay and attempt to locate ‘Tahoe’s hidden castle’, Vikingsholm. Or for a different vantage point of the water, drive north to Sand Harbor Beach and enjoy the views. The hotel has family-friendly film nights every Friday, plus games in the lobby, cornhole boards outside and a fire-pit for singsongs and s’mores. 

Local restaurants

There are lots of restaurants in the Heavenly ski village – enjoy cocktails and tacos with a view of the lake at Jimmy’s, or ditch the fast food at Sprouts. Evening options include The Naked Fish for sushi, Izabella for Italian and Edgewood for lobster chowder and house-cured charcuterie overlooking the water.

Local cafés

Driftwood Café has been providing breakfasts for the good people of Tahoe since 1960; and Ernie’s is another coffee-supplying Sixties institution. The Getaway Café is a morning option for locals in a hurry.

Local bars

There’s a speakeasy within walking distance, but you’ll have to find it first… other drinking options nearby include the cosy (and multi-tasking) theatre, bar and magic club The Loft, The Cocktail Corner, which has live entertainment daily, and The Idle Hour, a wine bar overlooking the lake.

A world away from its namesake Park Avenue address in Manhattan and right on the California-Nevada border, Station House Inn is a made-over roadside retreat a few blocks from the banks of the lake in southern Tahoe.

The old-school motel has been providing refuge for weary road-trippers since 1972, with a handy ski resort and beach ready to entertain them once they’ve had a rest. The wholesome shoreside playground has a fire-pit, swimming pool and general communal goodness (don’t be surprised if campsite singalongs break out). The aptly (if not modestly) named Heavenly Mountain is four blocks away, which means it’s easy to walk to the gondola even in ski boots. Activities on the water include boat rentals, kayaking, hiking and cycling. It’s more Big Easy than Big Apple (thanks to its southern sisters and New Orleans restaurant), but it’s an all-out American dream.
