Water lovers’ idyll

Setting

Provo’s peaceful south

Edged by coral-sand beaches and an island-studded saltwater lagoon that’s made for watersports, South Bank resort in Turks & Caicos is an idea worth floating. A boutique, all-villas stay, this easy-breezy escape is perched away from Providenciales’ prime sands, setting you up for peaceful palm-dappled days, idled mooching between beach bar, sea and spa. Only the clink of cocktail glasses or aroma of baking pizza are likely to disturb this classic Caribbean scene.

Need to know

Rooms

46 villas.

Check–Out

11am, and check-in is at 3pm. Both are flexible, on request and subject to availability.

More details

Rates at South Bank include buffet breakfast and hot dishes cooked à la carte — taken either at Lua Beach House or ordered to your villa. For some villas and selected dates, a minimum three-night stay may apply (seven nights over Christmas).

Also

Unfortunately, the current scope of South Bank is unsuitable if you have limited mobility. A new wing in the works, called Arc, will have an accessible design.

At the hotel

Pickleball court, tennis/basketball court, marina, private lagoon beach; kayaks, paddleboards and bikes to borrow; kids’ club, paid laundry service and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: air-conditioning, ceiling fan, HD TV, coffee- and tea-making kit, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and L’Occitane bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Light-filled, contemporary interiors unite all three of South Bank’s neighborhoods. Boat Houses are the most decorative and have private docks, with a shared pool at the heart of the village for swimming. If you're after Atlantic views of the reef-sheltered shallows, drop anchor at an Ocean Estates Villa. But it’s the Lagoon Villas that have our heart — minimalist in style, and with direct access to their saltwater namesake and beach.

Poolside

In the Boat House neighborhood, a family-friendly heated pool sits at the heart of the promontory; open from 8am until 6pm. The sandy-beach-fringed saltwater lagoon, studded with palm-shaded islands, is your other cooling-off spot — the cocktail-shaking Island Bar, its additional draw. From the resort, you can also stroll to Providenciales’ heavenly Long Bay Beach.

Spa

As tension ebbs away while you lie prone on a treatment bed — a skilled therapist at work on your back, the waft of essential oils calming the senses — consider that the aim of any massage or facial at South Bank’s spa is to conjure the ocean’s soothing embrace. The polished spa has a strong choice of rituals bringing together complementary relaxing elements; we’re also here for the couple’s therapies, and range of options you can book for pampering in your villa (including mani- or pedicures). Sign us up for a wave-soundtracked frangipani salt scrub on the terrace, and a romantic Under the Stars massage for two. A Fitness Center, kitted out with strength and cardio equipment, paired with mesmerising lagoon views, is available to keep workout regimes on track.

Packing tips

This is not a resort where you could ever bring too much swimwear. And your body will thank you later for bringing along salt-countering hair and skincare.

Also

Free, instructor-led yoga sessions run three times a week, set outdoors on Lagoon Island; private sessions (for an extra charge) are also available.

Pet‐friendly

No pets are allowed at South Bank resort. See more pet-friendly hotels in Turks & Caicos.

Children

Very welcome. Villas are arranged with up to seven bedrooms, so all clans can be catered for.

Best for

All ages are welcome at South Bank, but adults in charge may find it more relaxing to take little Smiths with some swimming ability.

Recommended rooms

Beach-bordered Lagoon Villas are ideal if your little Smiths are on the younger side; with direct access to the dock or a ladder into the ocean respectively, Boat Houses and Ocean Estates Villas will suit older children.

Crèche

The Kids' Club at South Bank welcomes juniors aged four to 12 for supervized creative play and games: on the schedule is everything from pizza making and cupcake decorating to nature walks, scavenger hunts, board games and painting. Open daily between 10am and 6pm, but the Club closes for lunch between 1pm and 2pm.

Activities

Water babies will enjoy lagoon dips, beach play and snorkeling. Scheduled activities at the Kids' Club extend to visits to the next-door Coral Reef Research Center. And juniors aged seven to 15 are welcome to a tailored choice of child-friendly treatments (in-villa or at the spa).

Swimming pool

There's no lifeguard, but supervized children are welcome at the Boat House neighborhood pool — if you can tear them away from the beachy lagoon, that is.

Meals

Between Lua’s wide-ranging menu, the Beach Bar’s pizzas and the Island Bar’s tapas, dining at South Bank is intrinsically family-friendly. There are children's menus and highchairs at Lua. Staff are happy to adjust portion sizes or adapt dishes on request where possible; this extends to heating baby food, too.

Babysitting

Resort staff are happy to arrange babysitting with an external provider; you’ll just need to give 24 hours' notice and rates start at US$90 for three hours.

No need to pack

As well as baby cots and highchairs, the hotel is also able to supply baby baths and playpens, subject to availability.

Sustainability efforts

South Bank is working towards Green Key certification. Already plastic-free, it uses full-size refillable bath products. Energy consumption is reduced with light timers, LED bulbs and, in some villas, solar panels. Rainwater, together with grey water, is used for irrigation around the grounds. A neighboring Coral Reef Research Center is open for guests to visit and also features on the Kids' Club activity schedule. South Bank engages in spotlighting its best practice to local schoolchildren, bringing them on-site for behind-the-scenes tours. There’s also a Grace Bay Resorts Community Foundation: a small donation is charged with every stay and the funds support various island charities and not-for-profit initiatives.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Snag a lagoon-side terrace table at Lua near the Beach Bar’s pizza oven for delightful aromas of baking dough; dance-shy diners will also appreciate being at a comfortable distance from Sunday night’s sunset fiesta.

Dress Code

Evenings at Lua and the Beach Bar call for colorful dresses, statement accessories or your loudest shirt.

Hotel restaurant

Lua Beach House is South Bank’s laidback dining spot for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and brings together comforting favorites with the visual finesse of fine dining. Seafoam interiors and rattan details set the beachy tone for lagoon-spying tables on the terrace. A morning buffet comes with freshly baked pastries and hot dishes cooked to order (try the shakshuka). Flavors continue to trot the globe throughout the day (ably assisted by a terrace pizza oven at the neighboring Beach Bar), but you’ll notice a consistent seafood focus and Asian influences; don’t miss its signature conch salad, served with fanfare inside a hollowed pineapple. On Sunday evenings, sunset parties cue DJ sets or live music (which may well have you dancing as well as dining). At the Island Bar, a selection of tapas accompanies coolers and cocktails. Private dining can be arranged at your villa to conjure a banquet for your clan.

Hotel bar

The beach-fringed Island Bar on the lagoon is your daytime spot for cocktails mixed to order, fridge-cold softs and moreish tapas. In front of Lua, the Beach Bar is an all-day spot for liquid refreshment — and pizza — that stays open way past sundowners.

Last orders

At Lua Beach House, breakfast runs 7am–10.30am; lunch is noon–3pm, and for dinner, it’s 5.30pm–9.30pm. The Beach Bar pours from 11am–11pm, and fires pizza from 5pm–9.30pm. The Island Bar serves 11am–6pm.

Room service

You can order dishes for delivery to your villa between 7am and 9.30pm daily.

Address

Turks and Caicos Islands

South Bank resort sits in a residential area beside Long Bay Beach and a short hop from Grace Bay on Providenciales in Turks & Caicos.

Planes

International arrivals touch down at Providenciales Airport, a 25-minute drive from the resort. Private transfers can be arranged from $150 one-way; shared taxis come in at around $50 each way but may involve multiple stops.

Automobiles

Car hire will always be your most purse-friendly option on Provo, where taxis are disproportionately costly. All villas come with parking spots or garages.

Other

If you’re arriving under sail or motor by sea, the resort has its own marina, and Boat Houses each have a private dock.

Worth getting out of bed for

When you can tear yourself away from your sun terrace or private pool, you’ll discover that South Bank has as much to keep you active as horizontal (yoga, pickleball, tennis). You can wheel around resort by borrowing a bike. Or take advantage of the hotel’s stash of watersports equipment and try stand-up paddleboarding or kayaking on the lagoon. A hop from your villa, Long Bay Beach lives up to its name with a broad sweep of soft coral sand lapped by turquoise shallows. Grace Bay’s popular beach, bordered by bars and restaurants, is a short drive away. Boat charters, deep-sea fishing or sunset sails can be arranged through the front desk. Snorkeling or Scuba diving on Turks & Caicos’s vast barrier reef is pure fish-freckled spectacle.

Local restaurants

Much of Provo’s dining scene centers around Grace Bay. Boldly painted tables and benches on the sand beside lights-strung palm trees make Da Conch Shack part culinary sensation, part tourist attraction, but a worthy pit stop for the island’s signature shellfish. Tucked into a palm grove, Coco Bistro is a popular spot for innovative plates such as Caicos conch bisque, pepper-crust rare tuna and blackened mahi. For fine dining in an intimate setting, Terra Mar delivers five-course tasting menus, plated with artful precision, at a chef’s table, with optional wine pairings (book ahead).

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this bliss-blanketed island hotel in Providenciales and tipped the sand out of their espadrilles, a full account of their Caribbean break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside South Bank in Turks & Caicos…

A lot of classic Caribbean pinch-me moments unfold at Turks & Caicos resort, South Bank. You can expect to ooh and aah over your new reality as you stroll over to the palm-dotted lagoon island or kick back with a rum-laced cocktail at the Beach Bar. Perhaps a soothing starlit massage or seafood feast on the terrace are the crunch points that will feel too good to be true.

And yet there’s so much at South Bank that goes beyond the seductive sand-and-sea playbook. It may be a resort, but it’s boutique in size, bringing warmth and a sense of intimacy to any sojourn here. It may enjoy easy access to ocean and flour-soft beaches, but ups the ante with a sheltered seawater lagoon. And while there’s enticement here for romance-seeking couples as much as for families, don’t mistake versatility for generality: South Bank plays its ace with thoughtful, personalized service — ensuring you stay afloat on cloud nine.
