Setting

Oxfordshire opulence

Spread across 100 acres of prime Cotswolds countryside, Soho Farmhouse is a self-contained hamlet of hedonism where everything you could possibly want is within arm’s reach… or at least a very short bicycle ride away. The double-height barns and Cotswold stone buildings dotted about the perfectly manicured farmyard are, variously: a health club with an indoor-outdoor swimming pool, buzzing restaurants (four, at last count), the Electric cinema, a boutique selling Soho House homewares, and even a cosy pub called the Mill Room that stays open 'til late.

Also

A word to the wise – Soho Farmhouse is a perennially popular place and almost every activity needs to be booked ahead to avoid disappointment, especially dinner reservations, spa treatments and cinema tickets.

At the hotel

Swimming pool, gym with group fitness classes, tennis courts, hot tubs and hydrotherapy pools, spa with sauna and steam room, Electric cinema, boating lake, stables, clay pigeon shooting, homewares boutique, farm shop, bikes to borrow. In rooms: free WiFi, Cowshed bath products and Soho Skin facial products, Smart TV, Marshall Bluetooth speaker, Roberts radio, tea, coffee and fully-stocked minibar.

Our favourite rooms

The privacy-assured cabins are our favourite option – they are stand-alone structures positioned in wildflower meadows or overlooking streams with wood burning stoves and bath tubs on private decks. Cabin guests can also take advantage of the roving cocktail bars on wheels that’ll park up alongside your front door and deliver you a perfectly mixed Bloody Mary with no call for shedding that signature fluffy bathrobe.

Poolside

The indoor-outdoor pool at the boathouse is heated year-round and open every day from 6.30am to 10pm.

Spa

The spa is a retreat within a retreat, offering everything from circulation-boosting body scrubs, to CBD massages, to facials using the brand’s own Soho Skin products. The spa also has an outpost of FaceGym and often has visiting practitioners specialising in targeted facials, bodywork or alternative therapies. Water babies should book ahead for the two-hour Lazy Lake experience which is a hydrotherapy circuit featuring onsen-style baths set into the lake itself. At the health club, there’s a daily schedule of group fitness classing, including yoga, spinning and HIIT as well as a free-weight space, a boxing ring and Peloton bikes. Personal training is available on request.

No need to bring a big bag of toiletries – every bathroom is stocked with no less than 10 full-sized Cowshed bath products and the whole product line of Soho Skincare (moisturiser, serum, cleanser, eye cream…)

Sustainability efforts

It’s reassuring to know that Soho House are working to deliver an environmental impact strategy across their sites. With 2030 goals set to enhance and standardise recycling programmes and responsible food-waste management at every outpost of the member’s club globally. They also work with local suppliers selected for their like-minded responsibility. In the kitchen, there’s scrutiny around how Soho House sources coffee, cocoa and palm oil, as well as sustainable seafood and responsibly reared meat. Expect greater choice of meat-free dishes and seasonal ingredients whenever practical. Measures to assess Soho House’s carbon footprint and reduce emissions are ongoing.

Food and Drink

Top Table

We love sitting up in the cosy mezzanine of the main barn, which has a roaring fire and feels intimate, though you still get the buzz of the crowd below.

Dress Code

It’s definitely casual, but in that artfully unstudied way that involves designer denim and on-trend knitwear for women and a Google Images search of ‘David Beckham off-duty’ for gentlemen.

Hotel restaurant

From first coffee to last cocktail, you’ve got plenty of options. The Main Barn is the farm’s central hub, a cavernous space serving an all-day menu of Soho House staples with a British twist. The Hay Barn is a touch more casual, serving wood-fired pizzas, pastas, fish and meat (try the prawn linguine). Pen Yen serves Japanese-inspired dishes from a Robata grill: sushi, bao buns, and their famous black cod. In the morning, follow the scent of rising bread to Blake’s bakery which serves breakfast, brunch and lunch as well as selling sourdough loaves and cinnamon rolls. And, for nose-to-tail foodies, book in at The Little Bell where Peter Creed and Tom Noest, the duo behind The Bell Pub in Langford serve up whole roast joints and fish with organic and natural wines.

Hotel bar

The Main Barn, the Hay Barn, and Pen Yen each has a bar serving a selection of wines, beers and ‘house tonics’ like the Picante de la Casa (a spicy margarita), the Soho Mule or the gin-and-cucumber-based Eastern Standard. The Mill Room is a taxidermy-filled country pub that stays open until 1am.

Last orders

The Hay Barn closes at 11pm and the Main Barn at midnight, but the Mill Room pub will stay open as long as you like.

Room service

Room service is available from 7am to 11pm. Guests staying in the Farm Cabins can call up the Cocktail Float or the Greasy Spoon (both on wheels) by using the phone number provided.

Address
Soho Farmhouse
Great Tew
Chipping Norton
OX7 4JS
United Kingdom

Soho Farmhouse occupies 100 acres of Oxfordshire countryside, near the pretty Cotswolds villages of Great Tew and Chipping Norton.

Planes

London’s Heathrow is the closest – about an hour and a half’s drive away. Private car transfers are available on request.

Trains

Aim for Banbury station – trains from London’s Paddington or Marylebone station take about an hour and a half. The station is about a 35-minute drive from the hotel; try Banbury Station Taxis or ask the hotel to arrange a private transfer.

Automobiles

It takes about two hours to drive from central London; there’s plenty of free parking on site.

Other

The hotel also has a helipad – you’ll just need to inform them ahead of time if you plan to make an airborne entrance.

Worth getting out of bed for

Are you feeling naughty or nice? If it’s the latter, pop down to the Health Club (it’s the big blue barn that sits astride the lake) for one of the group fitness classes – there’s HIIT, yoga, spinning or boxing offered every morning. Go for a refreshing swim in the indoor-outdoor swimming pool (yes, it’s even warm in January) before a cosseting treatment in the Cowshed spa

If you prefer to get your cardio from shopping, you’re also in luck. Aside from farm fare like sourdough and homemade honey in Blake’s Kitchen bakery, you can also browse Soho Home’s wares in the boutique above the main reception, sniff out hand-tied bouquets and plants in Farm Flowers and find designer pieces by Ganni, Maria Tash and Veja in The Store X

For the outdoorsy types, you can saddle up one of the horses in the stables for a hack or private lesson, get your eye in at clay pigeon shooting, take a tennis lesson or take a row boat out on the lake. If the weather is being a bit English for all that, catch a new release at the Electric Barn cinema.

But, let’s face it, you’ll probably spend most of your time at Soho Farmhouse eating and drinking – five restaurants, three bars, and a country pub on the premises means a stay here is a moveable feast. Luckily, you don’t have to drive anywhere because baby-blue bicycles are placed outside your room so you can pedal from one side of the property to the other in pursuit of the next picante (don’t worry if someone steals your bike while you’re at dinner, just steal someone else’s right back – all’s fair at the farm).

Local restaurants

Telling you to go anywhere else while you’re staying here feels a bit like telling a kid at Disney World to explore downtown Orlando. But if you really have exhausted every option in stumbling distance, the Wild Rabbit serves standout, seasonal food from its elevated pub setting in Kingham (book as far ahead as possible). And, if you loved the food at the Little Bell outpost here at the farmyard, you can visit its big brother, the original Bell Inn near Burford, for its wood-fired British dishes, pub garden and pizza oven

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this rollicking rural retreat and unpacked their Blake’s Kitchen Sourdough and Soho Home crystal champagne coupes, a full account of their rarefied countryside break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire

Soho Farmhouse isn’t so much a farm as a fully-fledged countryside resort that feels like a film set. The sense that you’ve left reality and stepped into a model village begins at the gatehouse where you’re offered a cocktail upon check-in (or Bailey’s-spiked hot chocolate, depending on the season), before climbing aboard a 1950s milk float for an anticipation-building ride down to the farmyard. Once you’ve arrived, it’s really a matter of choosing which avenue of fun to pursue first – a swim in the hot-year-round outdoor pool, a calming Cowshed treatment in the spa, or maybe seeing a new release in the red-velvet-swagged Electric cinema? If you’d like to get a speck of mud on those sized-for-you wellies they leave outside your door, you could go horseback riding, clay-pigeon shooting or even – whisper it – leave the gates to explore the chocolate-box villages of Great Tew and Chipping Norton. But with five restaurants and that open-’til-very-late country pub right here, we don’t see any reason to break the spell until it’s absolutely necessary.
