Setting

Castaway Canouan

Take the barefoot, beachfront charm of a classic Caribbean stay, upgrade it with members’ club frills and you have: Soho Beach House Canouan. Soho House may be best known for its exclusive urban boltholes, but at this Grenadines hideaway they’ve swapped city threads for board shorts and tees: the Club’s trademark interiors, Cowshed spa and hangout spaces have all been given a beach-house makeover. It’s the powder-sand setting, however, that steals the show – lapped by aquamarine waters and in a prime spot to catch sunset, this boutique beach retreat is all about kicking back in the Caribbean.

Please note, if you are not a Soho House member, you have the option to add a 12-month Soho Friends membership to your booking for $130. This membership covers one room a stay for the member and any additional rooms booked for their children under 18. Public rates are also available.

At the hotel

Spa, gym, fitness studios, deli, boutique, free WiFi. In rooms: Roberts radio, Bluetooth speaker, minibar, free tea and coffee, free bottled water, Cowshed and Soho Skin products.

Our favourite rooms

Small, medium and medium plus rooms are spread across three two-storey buildings – all with sea views and private balconies. Medium and medium plus rooms come with a separate living room (which includes dining space in medium plus). Request a top-floor room for double-height ceilings — ground-floor for direct access from your room to the beach.

Poolside

There’s no pool at Soho Beach House Canouan but the hotel’s location on west-facing Grand Bay is a safe swimming beach.

Spa

Beside the outdoor lounge terrace, a clapboard pavilion is at the heart of the Cowshed spa, where you can book in for hand, feet and body treatments. You can choose to have your massage therapy in an open-sided palapa nearer the shore; in-room treatments are also an option. Next door, Soho Health Club is a two-storey pavilion; its ground-floor combines a gym with LifeFitness and Technogym equipment with a consultation room used for one to ones about tailored fitness and/or nutrition programmes. Upstairs, studio spaces are used for guided yoga and meditation or HIIT classes – all free to join (private classes can be arranged at extra cost).

Packing tips

Hairdryers, hair straighteners and bathrobes are all provided, so you can leave extra space in your cases for all those boutique buys and Cowshed goodies you'll be bringing home.

Also

Book private dinners and spa treatments ahead of arrival to avoid disappointment. Assorted ground-floor rooms are adapted for wheelchair users – although you’ll need sturdy wheels to navigate the planks-on-sand walkways around the grounds.

Pet‐friendly

Only service animals with valid documents are allowed at this island beach house. See more pet-friendly hotels in Grenadines.

Children

Welcome and extra beds can be added to rooms when you book through the Smith travel team; the atmosphere, however, is more adult-oriented than family-friendly and room layouts mean that more than two’s a crowd.

Sustainability efforts

It’s reassuring to know that Soho House are working to deliver an environmental impact strategy across their sites. With 2030 goals set to enhance and standardise recycling programmes and responsible food-waste management at every outpost of the member’s club globally. They also work with local suppliers selected for their like-minded responsibility. In the kitchen, there’s scrutiny around how Soho House sources coffee, cocoa and palm oil, as well as sustainable seafood and responsibly reared meat. Expect greater choice of meat-free dishes and seasonal ingredients whenever practical. Measures to assess Soho House’s carbon footprint and reduce emissions are ongoing.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Tables to the front of the upper restaurant overlook the jetty, the gently lapping sea and star-filled night skies.

Dress Code

Casual is fine – when there’s live music on the calendar, you may want something more glamorous in reserve…

Hotel restaurant

Conch fritters, game-fish skewers, smoked barracuda paté slathered on flatbreads… At main restaurant Palapa, much of executive chef Jonathan Gargan’s culinary inspo is fresh off the boat – no sooner caught than transformed into ceviche, pan-fried mains and more. Leave room for key lime pie, chocolate pots or papaya-basil sorbet. Dine in the open-sided thatch-roofed restaurant – split between an upper hut by the bar and a second palapa down a set of steps; make time for at least one private dinner for two by fairylights on the jetty. This is the hotel’s all-day spot, starting with breakfasts such as burritos, bircher muesli or buttermilk pancakes, pastries and smoothies. For lunch, wood-fired pizzas are on offer alongside burgers, pasta, salads and grills. Past the alfresco terrace lounge there’s also a deli, where you can pick up fresh pastries, paninis and soft drinks.

Hotel bar

That’ll be bars plural… Surrounded by thatch parasols and loungers on the sand, a counters-on-all-sides beach bar caters to parched beachgoers with ice-cold refreshers. The Terrace Bar (the other side of Palapa restaurant) serves the thirsty at the hotel’s outdoor lounge – some draped on daybeds, some at terrace tables (toes in the sand), others shaded on a (very) long cushion-dotted bench that edges the boardwalk from Palapa to the spa; it’s open until 11pm and a DJ booth is put to good use with weekend sets.

Last orders

Open from 8am, Palapa serves breakfast until 11am; brunch or lunch till 4pm, then dinner until 9.30pm.

Room service

Order from Palapa’s menu during restaurant hours, following the above timings for breakfast, brunch/lunch and dinner.

Address
Soho Beach House Canouan
Grand Bay
Clifton
VC0450
Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

Soho Beach House Canouan is on Grand Bay near Charlestown, on the west coast of Canouan in the Grenadines.

Planes

Canouan has its own airport with connections from St Vincent and Barbados. Travelling via St Vincent involves an overnight stay on the island between flights. The hotel is happy to coordinate regional connections with your international flights and you’ll be met at Canouan airport for onward transfer to the hotel, a five-minute drive away.

Automobiles

Wheels are not an option for stays at Soho Beach House Canouan, where airport transfers are taken care of and town is only a stroll away. For getting around, there are private cabs, water taxis and island buses.

Other

Arrivals by boat are as popular as air travel in Canouan: if you’re arriving by sea, you’ll be met at the beach house jetty for welcome drinks and help with your luggage.

Worth getting out of bed for

The interior of Grenadine island Canouan is largely forested and hilly, with a coral reef just offshore and a coastline made up of picturesque coves and stretches of soft coral sand. Pristine beaches such as L’Ance Guyac, Glossy Bay and Godahl Bay are overlooked by upscale hotels but open to all – ideal for plans-free, sun-kissed days spent relaxing, reading, and dipping in the sea. Back at the hotel’s beach, Grand Bay, there are kayaks, snorkelling kit and SUPs you can borrow. The hotel can arrange guided trips on land or by sea such as snorkelling the shoreline, hiking up Mount Royal, or taking a boat to marine park Tobago Cays, where you can swim with turtles. Once you’ve got a taste for island hopping, line up trips to Mayreau (the smallest inhabited Grenadine isle) and Happy Island (a restaurant islet near Union), too. Just be sure to factor in downtime at the beach between adventures…

Local restaurants

At Mandarin Oriental, there are two stellar restaurants to try: L'Ance Guyac Beach Club serves Mediterranean plates shoreside and specialises in seafood; dinner-only Tides works alchemy on surf and turf with liberal use of the grill. Sandy Lane Yacht Club is home to beachfront Shenanigans for pulled pork tacos, steak sandwiches, jerk chicken wings and prawn wraps. Just down the road from Soho Beach House Canouan, Sea Grapes Beach Club has a lively atmosphere, enviable spot on the beach and hearty portions of Caribbean cooking.

Local bars

A rustic shack on the beach, Maxwell’s is where to find rum punch or beer served up with local flavour. Scruffy’s at Sandy Lane is a sturdily benched crew bar that attracts yachties and locals for its convivial cheer and sea views.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this island outpost of the members’ club in St Vincent & the Grenadines and unpacked their bottles of Clarkes Court and Westerhall rum, their nutmeg and mace, a full account of their sunset-soaked Caribbean break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Soho Beach House Canouan

Size is deceptive on Canouan, one of the smaller islands in an already tiny Caribbean archipelago, the Grenadines. Yet into its tapering slip of land (just six kilometres long), against a backdrop of rugged green hills, turquoise bays and floury sands, it packs a handful of upscale stays, razzle-prompting restaurants and calypso-cool bars. It’s this heady mix of good looks and an appetite for play that caught the attention of Soho House; the members’ club has bagged a prime spot on Grand Bay. Trademark retro-luxe decor has been tailored to suit its island setting (restful hues, whitewashed wooden panelling, rattan details and voile-draped four-posters). This is a place to saunter barefoot – to your thatch-parasol-shaded beach lounger, or to the outdoor lounge, which has a villagey feel, edged by the hotel’s boutique, deli, spa and health club. By night, enjoy a private dinner at the end of the jetty under fairylights, and linger over rum punch at the terrace bar. By day, snorkel the coral reef, swim with turtles in the Tobago Cays or scale the forested trails to hike up Mount Royal. Canouan may be small, but it’s not short of adventures…
