There are reserved parking spots for placard holders, and the hotel’s communal areas (including the spa's ground-floor treatment rooms and sauna) are all wheelchair accessible. The only inaccessible area is the top floor relaxation rooms in the spa. Two rooms (one Wiley House King and one Walker House King) have been adapted with grab bars, roll-in showers (or step-in mobility tubs), widened doorways and lowered counters in-line with ADA requirements.

Set across the Walker and Wiley houses, each room comes with its fair share of rustic charm (patterned textiles, hand-carved furnishings) but the Walker House King Balcony is our top-scorer for its restful forest views.

Spa

Secluded inside the original Carriage House, the hotel’s spa (open till 6pm) features all you’ll need for a truly restorative stint. Bespoke massages, full-body scrubs and refreshing facials are held across seven treatment rooms, and there is a multitude of soothing lounges, as well as a sauna for between-treatment tranquility.

Packing tips

A notepad, pencil and perhaps a book or two — these college campus surroundings might just inspire some learning.

Hotel restaurant

Growing up on a family farm in Gainesboro taught now-chef Trevor Stockton young that great dishes are rooted in the quality of their produce. It’s an ethos he’s engrained into the seasonally charged menus that have awarded RT Lodge’s restaurant its spot in the Michelin Guide. Options will be led by what Stockton’s local suppliers have dropped off that morning, but typically feature elevated takes on American classics (the buttermilk fried chicken is a notable stand-out, should you visit during its rounds). Breakfasts spotlight homemade loaves, pastries, granola, scrambled eggs and bacon; and after dark, Graham crackers and marshmallows are your toasty fireside snacks. 

Hotel bar

The Morningside Room — whose name is a subtle nod to original owner Susan Wiley Walker — is your cossetting spot for all-things drinks and light bites. There’s a lengthy list of creative cocktails, locally brewed beers and wines to choose from; as well as quite the line-up of seasonal plates, sent straight from the restaurant's kitchen.

Last orders

Breakfast is served daily from 7am–10am, and dinner at the restaurant is 5pm–9pm (9.30pm on Friday and Saturday; closed on Sundays). The Morningside Room is open from 3pm–11pm (10pm on Sunday), with food served between 5pm and 9pm (4pm–8pm on Sunday).

Planes

Domestic flights serve McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville, which is around a 15-minute drive from the hotel. If you’re arriving internationally, you’ll need to catch a connection through one of the country's larger hubs; or, those touching down in Nashville can make the three-hour drive to Maryville instead.

Automobiles

This arcadian corner of East Tennessee calls for a car, and the hotel's free carpark makes bringing your wheels all the easier.

Worth getting out of bed for

Your pastoral locale at RT Lodge lends itself to outdoor pursuits, with hiking and cycling trails wrapping around neighboring parks and Pistol Creek Wetland Center an appealing starting point for birdwatchers. The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is half an hour away by car, and for low-energy days, downtown Maryville is well worth a wander with its trove of boutiques, independent cafés and cozy, community spirit. If you’re after big city endeavors, Knoxville is a 30-minute drive away and Nashville, a committed three hours.

Foothills Milling Co has been reeling in the love since 2001, when the fine-dining restaurant first set-up shop in Wears Valley. Three years — and an abundance of awards — later, the family-run favorite moved to Maryville, where you’ll find its same signature seasonal fare and convivial spirit today. For an intimate evening, Raven Steakhouse and Lounge wins big for its prime cuts and romantic spirit; and if it’s Italian classics you’re craving, make Bella your base.

Pick-me-ups come courtesy of Beard Brothers Coffee in the form of their beloved, energy-boosting blends. And if you like your caffeine with a baked accompaniment, Rebel’s Dough Joe and its pillowy goods are just down the street.

In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside RT Lodge in Maryville, Tennessee… 

When Susan Wiley Walker first visited Maryville in 1932, she hadn’t planned more than a visit to her sister, who lived and worked on the college campus. But before long, she had fallen fast for this rural corner of East Tennessee, convincing the college to let her build a house alongside her sister’s in the promise of gifting them her home once she passed. 

A register’s-worth of owners have walked through its doors in the last century, but its most recent iteration as RT Lodge is what’s stolen our hearts — almost as fast as it did Susan’s. Works have added her namesake lodgings, where a handful of charmingly quaint rooms in each now watch over embracing gardens. In the Main House, an award-winning restaurant comes out top of class for its farm-fresh fare; and the Carriage House’s spa is all set to soothe once you’re back from fresh-air-filled days in Tennessee’s towns and countryside.
