Setting

Hop from Copenhagen

Embracing Køge Bay’s western edge — and just half an hour from Copenhagen — Rox Resort makes an idyllic escape from the capital’s sprawl. Elegantly designed interiors eschew Danish minimalism in favour of damask fabrics and whimsical furnishings, with private balcony panoramas spritzed with sea air. Globetrotting flavours fill menus at the restaurants, but Nordic roots return up on the rooftop, where a remedial trio of heated pools and a view-endowed sauna keep soothing Scandi rituals afloat.

All of the hotel’s restaurants and bars are also accessible, with lifts between floors; but unfortunately, the swimming pools and spa aren't equipped with dedicated facilities for guests with limited mobility.

At the hotel

Beach within reach, concierge, indoor and outdoor padel court, golf simulators, five-a-side football field, games room and free WiFi throughout. In rooms: TV, climate control, minibar, free bottled water, bathrobes, slippers and bespoke bath products.

Our favourite rooms

Scandinavia's distinctly minimalist style meets short shrift in rooms here, where patterned upholstery and statement lighting stand out against a canvas of quieter colour palettes. For cinematic Køge Bay scenes, it has to be the Deluxe Vista Retreat; and if you’re staying as a collective, the Paramount Junior Suite and top-floor Signature Suite both sleep up to four.

Poolside

You'll find three year-round pools at Rox (open 8am to midnight), all spread across the rooftop, fringed with sunloungers and backdropped by far-reaching outlooks of Køge Bay. The terrace and ocean view pools are both outdoors so better suited to summer; though they are heated to lessen the bite of the Danish winter. The Pool Club’s quarters is also heated and better protected from the elements under its domed-glass ceiling, should you prefer a cosier post-swim set-up.

Spa

Up on the rooftop, you’ll find the Pool Club’s adjoining spa with its spacious sauna — set to host traditional Nordic rituals — and two treatment rooms for shoulder-dropping massages and refreshing facials. There’s an indoor and outdoor gym, too, for those who’d rather detach with a circuit or two.

Packing tips

A well-worn pair of Tretorn boots, as well as more stylish second-hand threads that’ll have you looking straight from Copenhagen’s streets — there’s a time and place for both at Rox.

Also

Rox Resort is the sister stay to its Scandi Smith-stablemates Ellery Beach House and Maryhill Estate.

Pet‐friendly

Pups are welcome in the Deluxe Vista Retreat and Premier Ocean View rooms for a daily charge of DKK500 each. See more pet-friendly hotels in Køge.

Children

Welcome; there aren’t any facilities dedicated to kids, but most rooms can accommodate an extra bed, and the suites sleep up to four with two on a sofa-bed.

Sustainability efforts

Rox Resort treads lightly in keeping with its green-minded coastal locale. Clean-up initiatives and collaborations with local suppliers keep Køge’s community close; and at the resort itself, motion sensors, energy-efficient appliances, water-saving taps and refillable products ensure waste is kept to a minimum.

Food and Drink

Top Table

Window-side or fire-warmed are always your best bets.

Dress Code

The Dumpling Bar is a laidback, come-as-you-are kind of place; but for evenings at Smith, you’ll need to bring out your finer ’fits. And for the speakeasy-style Birdcage Bar, anything feathered or fringed will fly.

Hotel restaurant

With a name much to our approval, Smith is the flagship of Rox Resort’s two restaurants. At first, menus feel firmly rooted in traditional French flavours, with flame-grilled and glazed cuts deftly prepared in the restaruant’s on-site steakhouse. But look a little closer, and there’s a spicy Sichuan spin to each dish: the daily-changing butcher's choice is marinated in a fermented chili rub, for example. We’ve also heard they’ll be a fresh sushi bar, featuring nori-wrapped king crab and wagyu tataki, for those seeking something with a little more umami. Speaking of the fifth flavour, you’ll also find it packed into the doughy delights at the Dumpling Bar — a devoted-to-the-dish eatery set just behind the Pool Club.

Hotel bar

There’s a distinct yesteryear glamour to Birdcage Bar, where mixologists are deftly devoted to their craft, and cocktails — both creative and classic — send senses fluttering with punchy flavours and picture-pretty garnishes. A further four bars have you covered for all occasions, too: the Pool Club Bar peddles post-dip pick me ups, the Fire Room pours nightcaps that warm from within, and the Terrace and Rooftop bars pair summer sips with sultry coastal scenes.

Last orders

Smith serves breakfast from 7am–11am; lunch from noon–4.30pm and dinner between 4.45pm and 9.30pm. The Dumpling Bar is open noon till 10pm, and the Birdcage Bar’s hours are 11am–1am. All other bars close at midnight.

Anonymous review

Every hotel featured is visited personally by members of our team, given the Smith seal of approval, and then anonymously reviewed. As soon as our reviewers have returned from this coastal hotel in Denmark and unpacked their rackets and robes, a full account of their beside-the-bay break will be with you. In the meantime, to whet your wanderlust, here's a quick peek inside Rox Resort in Køge…

With their calm coastal settings and small towns painted in pastels, Copenhagen’s suburbs have long proved a tonic from Denmark’s fashionable capital. And in a bay-snuggled spot overlooking the Øresund Strait, Rox Resort has arrived to add to their allure.

Beyond its grand façade, interiors feel far removed from the distinctly minimalist style Scandinavia is so well known for. Wonderfully offbeat patterns and sumptuous upholstery are a playful foreground to the blissful bay views appreciable from rooms’ private balconies, three soothing rooftop pools, and a couple of revered Asian-fusion restaurants.

But step outdoors and that wholesome Scandi ethos resurfaces; this is a place where days are spent wild swimming in the Baltic, hiking and biking around its lacing shoreline, and strolling Køge’s quaint streets. For those immersing themselves headfirst in Nordic traditions — and frosty waters — cold sea plunges come with an easy warm-up back at base, courtesy of cheek-rosing cocktails and wood-fired sauna sessions. Turns out that Rox Resort is quite the tonic too...
